Went in here last week to try and find a game that interested me and WOW they have quite a selection! I ended up finding a board game that I liked and the employees were great. Also told me about the tons of games they have behind the counter that are for customer use to try the game out. I was scraping to find a hobby shop in the Carlsbad area and was stoked when I found PAD. They carry all of the best hobby supplies as well as a full range of Minis, RPG Books, MTG and more. This is one of those stores that the voice in your head screams 'danger' when you walk in. As a huge geek and professional game designer I love both the quantity and quality of products. I didn't find what I was looking for, but the owner was helpful and nice. He doesn't sell comics anymore, just the novels and LOTS of game stuff. My jerk cousin played D&D while I was growing up, so anytime I see that kind of game stuff - I cringe. Good though, for those of you who don't. I'm not a huge gamer but my girlfriend and I both grew up in families that enjoyed playing board games on rainy days and such so we enjoy to do so when we are hanging out at our apartment. Unfortunately just being the two of us in there limits our options for games. Had a really great experience here a couple of weeks ago. I'm not an avid game player but was looking for something portable to play with my wife on a vacation with lots of plane flights and layovers. I wasn't made to feel like a dork for walking into a game store, and I wasn't made to feel unimportant since I wasn't a game geek. Got some good advice from an employee on which games would work best for me and paid a fair price. Even better: got a hand-written (!) thank you card and coupon in the mail the next week. This is my first visit to the new location. It was defiantly an upgrade from the corner spot they held before. Larger selection and lots more space. My only issue was I am used to the two older gentlemen who used to work the store. The new employees were not very friendly or helpful. Otherwise this is a great stop for nerding it up. read more

As a newbie to board gaming in the last couple years, I've gone in search of what's hot, exploring what mechanics I like, and made peace with both party games and war games alike. I spent a good part of the year picking and looking for what I thought were grail games, only to try them out after getting them and realize I wasn't really into tile laying games and had to be in a particular mood for coops and what I would now think of as gateway games. Since I am a thorough type (process vs outcome -process ever more important to me), I've gone to over 20 stores in the last year and keep coming back to Pair A Dice. There are enough newbies to frequent the store to remind me of how I began in the hobby and a good amount of war games available to keep my interest piqued. (I'm currently waiting on Gandhi and the Decolonization of India ordered from GMT and just recently bought Flamme Rouge and the Climbers here.) Pair A Dice has been a sweet gaming getaway for me and am always happy to converse with the store owner and staff. They're friendly to those who've just begun and each have their own unique insight to try to help in your next find. read more

Recently found out about this place from friend's son (who went here years ago) and started coming here for Friday Night Magic and (Pre)-Release events. Like all the other reviewers, ALL of the staff are super nice and friendly. I never visited when they had comics so I never expected them so I don't count that as a loss of a star. As a straight up game store, this place rocks. They have a pretty large store and very large game room, which is a huge bonus compared to some other game stores in the area that try and jam players into the retail space (but I guess that's better than nothing). Best thing though I think are the people and culture. For FNM, they do separate pods of 8 (at least for draft) and have random giveaways. Their motto is EVERYONE gets a prize. It's definitely stores like this that are needed to keep gaming alive. As for regulars, I have yet to meet a regular here who acts like a know-it-all jerk out to win at all costs, but then again I've only come to play Magic. But the regulars and the staff are what make me want to come here for FNM rather than other locations in the North County area. And I totally did not know they were on the brink of closing (I just started coming early this year) but boy am I glad they didn't! As for comments on prices being high, having only bought a few games here (Carcassone, Guillotine, Magic) everything seems to be standard price (retail). Of course I'm sure you can buy anything cheaper on the net, but honestly the ability to help a local store stay in business and have a place to play those games is worth the extra few dollars (and having it immediately to play that night ain't bad either) read more

I frequent this store when I am in San Diego. They recently opened a new and updated store. It is great and you can come and game there as well. Good selection of warhammer and like games. The staff is very helpful and they have a customer card that works like the grocery store cards. The more you shop, the more coupons and discounts you get. Also, they email them to you so you can print them out and cash in at the store. Very clean and tidy and easy to find! read more

I have to say it again....by far, Pair A Dice is the best game store in Southern California. Great inventory of games (new and used). Awesome, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Boardgames, card games, miniatures, RPGs, game supplies, and an awesome and huge game room (including a private game room you can rent if you are looking to have a more quiet game experience with friends). I'm constantly in there buying new board games, miniatures, card games and supplies. Rob, the owner, is awesome and really takes good care of his customers. And the staff, Kevin, Kenny and Gary are great too. Whether it be Magic The Gathering, Warhammer 40K, Warhammer, Warmachine/Hordes, RPGs, Yugi-Oh (did I spell that right?), war games, board games, you will find it and you will find plenty of great people to play with. I have bought virtually ALL my Munchkin supplies here. They carry an awesome assortment, and the owner even came up with some old stock out of storage and sold it without markup. In fact, giving some stuff away promotionally at the time. The recent expansion to the store is impressive, and I can tell by the amount of people there, that the gamers love this place as well. Pair a Dice games is my favorite LGS (local game store). They have such a wide selection of games and hobby accessories, I could window shop alone for a good long while and enjoy myself. They also do Friday Night Magic along with other weekly events, all detailed on their site. The employees there are pretty good, while some in the past have been iffy, they seem to have weeded them out. At least one of them will be able to answer any questions you have about a specific game, and they are always up for just having a genuine conversation - of course they'll break it off to help someone but never rudely. My only gripe is they only seem to do doubles WH40K tournaments - trying to find a place that does ITC. Maybe its only sporadically, I'll have to ask next time I go in so take this part with a grain of salt. Highly recommend this shop though. read more

Love this store! They used to carry comics as well as games. They had some tough times and almost closed but now they are once again going strong it seems. One casualty of their travails is that they no longer carry new comics or back issues. They do have a big selection graphic novels, essentials, showcases, etc. The main attraction however is the games and gaming. They have a good sized gaming room and a great selection of games too. Though I haven't seen him there in a while, they have a guy named Kevin who works there who is GREAT! He is the nicest guy and totally knows his games. He will spend his time with you make recommendations based on what he learns from you. He is a fantastic asset to this store - I hope he's still employed there. read more

Pair A Dice is my go-to spot for Magic: the Gathering cardhunting. While I do frequent the shops that take the extra time to organize their cards by color, set, and whatever-else-have-you, Pair A Dice throws such frivolous restrictions to the wind! Their boxes are a jumbled, rainbow mess of cards, and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's a bit like dumpster-diving, sifting through the heaps of garbage to find the tender, tasty morsels within. When I find myself with a couple hours to kill on a Sunday afternoon, I find the allure of these too much to resist. The cardhunting, not the... never mind. All in all, nice location, absurdly friendly staff, decent prices (they charge tax, like Game Empire). I solely buy Magic cards from them, but when the inevitable day comes that I venture out into tabletop gaming, I hope to make my first purchase from Pair A Dice. read more

I've been coming to Pair a Dice for over 10 years, and I always make sure to shop there first. This local business has great selection, a helpful and friendly staff, and really does a great job with keeping the gaming community involved in frequent events. As a side note, Pair a Dice also has a great Member Rewards program which is free to sign up for. I usually get $10 off my next visit every time I go in. It is a very nice store that has been redone over the years, even offering gaming events & free mailers with discounts when you join their free members club. They even have board games for younger kid's, along with many options like card games from general use to collectors editions. Staff was very help & kind. They even had Hello Kitty & Simpson's games! If you don't want to go to the busy mall area's & want a more relaxed setting, this is the place. I live in Hillcrest so Pair A Dice is probably the farthest game store in San Diego from me. WIth that said it is my go to FLGS because they have a huge selection and a great staff. In the past the staff has gone out of there way to suggest new games based on games that my wife and I have played before and liked. You can tell they truly care about games and are not just looking to sell products by the fact that they have even suggested games to me that they were admittedly not carrying, but they thought we would really enjoy. read more
