It meets above Grand Marais at the old Maple Hill…read moreChurch building-- which means you go up the Gunflint Trail until you see the Golf Club's sign and then it's the next left-- there's a little "The Episcopal Church Welcomes You" sign there, too. You go down a dirt road, which, near the end of that dirt road, turns left. Follow it left into the cemetery and the church will be on your left. There's a boardwalk down to the church from the road; so, once you get there, it's reasonably accessible to folks who have difficulties walking. The people are very friendly; everyone wears a name tag, regulars and visitors alike. You don't get singled out during the liturgy or announcements, which is nice. Often it's the members, not one of the priests, who preaches. You don't necessarily hear a pro speaking, but that can be good-- and the priests, when they preach, are good. What to do is printed in the bulletin; I never felt lost in that regard. And people are good to one another; if someone makes a mistake they just all laugh it off and go on again. Low-stress liturgy. There is bread for communion, and sometimes they have gluten-free bread, too. At communion they gather at the altar rail, some stand and some kneel. You put out your hand and get bread to eat, then the chalice comes along and you drink. I don't think they would object if someone chose to dip their bread in the chalice instead of drinking from the common cup-- but I just drank (so, I didn't test out that theory). Before the final benediction they share announcements and prayer concerns; then they all go outside and have coffee and goodies that they've brought. This Sunday they had homemade spice cake, which was great. And then you drive back down the hill into town for lunch. It really is lovely. They do not have a musician, so the music is recorded. But as recorded music goes, it's not bad. (I'll probably give 'em another star when they get a musician to play piano or organ or flute or whatever-- but I enjoy the place regardless.) All in all, a good way to spend a Sunday morning in Grand Marais. They will be glad to see you, and welcoming. My being gay has never felt like any sort of issue there.
