Whatever happened to "no shirt, no shoes, no dice"? I walked in on June 6, 2026 sometime 5-6pm. My wife and I were looking for a quick dinner with an outside dining option near her car service appointment in Wallingford. I remembered that there was a Yelp Elite event that I missed at nearby Pancheros. Pancheros is essentially an assembly line style burrito, taco and bowl place. You pick your style, your proteins and toppings, and they make it for you. I chose a burrito with pork carnitas and toppings such as pinto beans, queso, corn, pico, peppers and onions. They seemed to press the tortilla on the spot and it was soft and a step up from normal. The filling was good and felt healthier than many places we could have chosen for a quick dinner. This is a blast from the past! I remember when they opened in Shelton back in 2007. I used to stop in for lunch at least three times a week when I worked in Trumbull. Pancheros Mexican Grill is a chain of fast casual Tex Mex restaurants that was founded in 1992. The chain was founded by Rodney Anderson. I recently attended a Yelp Connecticut Elite event at the location in Wallingford, Connecticut (which happens to be the closest location to me). This location opened in April 2007 and is owned by the Mesite Family of restaurateurs (who have owned several different restaurant properties in the area for over 60 years). Pancheros' goal is to offer consumers various meals made from fresh ingredients at reasonable prices. All items are made fresh on the premises. At the end of the day, all leftover items are thrown out; they don't even have a freezer to put them in. At this special Elite event, all attending Yelp Elite members were treated to their choice of meal (burrito, burrito bowl, tacos or quesadilla) with a side of blue corn chips, fresh queso dip, and a fountain beverage. I decided to go with a Steak Burrito. All of the ingredients tasted very fresh, especially the fresh-pressed tortilla. The blue corn chips with the homemade queso were also excellent. Aside from the food, I enjoyed meeting all of the other friendly Elite members. Overall, I really enjoyed my food at Pancheros and I would definitely go back. I LOVE that they press them fresh, but I went with a burrito bowl today with steak. The chips were a little salty for my taste but it is impossible to make everyone happy. First off...I love Pancheros!!! I've never been to another location, but I've been coming to this one for years. My daughters are six and they had to be maybe one when my friend and I first came here. We've been regulars ever since. When I suggest Pancheros for dinner my girls are always extatic! The food is consistently fresh and healthier than normal for a to-go quick service Mexican restaurant. While the freshly pressed tortilla is a plus, my absolute go to is the bowl! Depending on the server sometimes you'll get HUGE helpings, and in general you always get more in a bowl. The carnitas is delicious, and I love that they offer a little cilantro on top. They will even mix both kinds of beans or multiple kinds of meat for no extra charge. I've also always had wonderful service here! One gentleman in particular has been there for years and is just so nice! Always has a smile on his face and offers a warm reception...I will be sure to get his name and update this review! One point I will make is that some of the negative reviews are regarding online orders. I cannot speak to this because I always go in and order. It's honestly very fast, so to me it doesn't matter. So even though I been to two other yelp events, but this is the first as a yelp member. Which made it more special. But enough about me let's talk Mexican grill. This has got to be one of best Mexican grill around so far. They are courteous and helpful and ready to serve whatever you like. Off the menu of course. They have indoor and outdoor dining! I stopped here after an oil change at Toyota. It was late in the afternoon, around 3 pm, and I was starving since I missed lunch. I ordered a burrito and was impressed. First off, they pay attention to detail, when they rolled my burrito, there was a small tear, and they were going to remake/roll it, but I told them not to do so, and it would still taste the same! There are a lot of options here, but everything is fresh and homemade. My only issue is that some things are included, but others like cheese, sour cream, guac, and queso are extra. So depending on what you order, it can get a little pricy. I understand there is a cost for all of these, but maybe a regular and supreme option is a better approach, so it doesn't feel like they are nickel and diming you. The food quality and taste makes up for the cost because everything is delicious. Also, even though I came there very hungry, I could only get through half, since my burrito was packed with so many wonderful ingredients. I love that Pancheros is a chain, but doesn't feel like one at all. Would I come back? Sure, if I was in the area. If you can imagine a Chipotle ripoff with overtly friendly customer service, that pretty much sums up Pancheros. It is so much so like Chipotle that it unfortunately has to be compared to the successful major chain (minus an E.coli scare or two) rather than a stand-alone restaurant. The meat selection seems to have less flavor overall. Having had the carnitas at one point and chicken at my next visit, it seems like the seasoning doesn't set with the meat while cooking as well. I speculate but can't confirm that there is probably less salt used as well which may be better for your health, but means the meat is lacking in character. A week or two before Chipotle announced their "queso sauce," Pancheros had their queso cheese which has been advertised heavily in all the ads I get in the mail as well as in-store. Honestly, queso sauce in both these restaurants is not that great, it doesn't add flavor, and makes things messy overall. Hard pass. Two things make Pancheros stand out then from their competitor. The tortillas used in the burritos are more doughy and less greasy. The extra stretch of each tortilla means the hefty burritos can hold more weight and not tear apart after two bites. The other notable characteristic, at least at this location, is that all the workers greet you like a small business would greet their regulars who have been there for years. Shame really, if Pancheros came 10 years earlier into the game I think it may have had a shot. read more

Let me start off by saying, my husband and I are basically "Pancheros aficionados" as we have been to them all over the country, starting in South Dakota. This shop is one of our very top, if not our new favorite location. The 2 gentlemen working (we'll refer to them as Chris 1 & Chris 2 [they both had jackets saying Chris]) were the greatest! Chris 1 greeted us as we came up to the counter like we were longtime friends, and Chris 2 came out from the back to help Chris 1 out with the rest of the opening duties (we came in shortly after opening as we passed through town) and finished my husbands burrito. Chris 2 was also extremely kind. They gave generous portions, had great attitudes, and as always the tortillas were perfect and the burritos were wrapped tight! Highly recommend this location, and I hope everyone can get the same friendly service from my new two favorite Chris'! read more
