And during the Whitby Goth Weekend they open a back room so there's even more choice. Or you can just buy online from their website if you can't get to Whitby (or if you can't find the shop; it's now along a back street). It has all the traditional goth-style clothes: velvet dresses, frilly shirts, corset tops etc. and a few steampunk-style items too. They sell men and women's clothes, plus accessories like bags, jewelry etc. My one criticism is that if you're looking for anything different or unusual then you won't find it here, it's all very much the generic/everyday goth clothes. The prices are average for your typical goth shop i.e. it can seem quite expensive compared to High Street fashions. I've never been that impressed with the staff: they never seem to be alternative and sometimes have music on which is definitely not goth! They're friendly enough but as they're not into the goth culture or lifestyle then I wouldn't trust them for an honest opinion. They're not open every day so either check the opening times if you're going to Whitby specifically to visit The Great Goth otherwise you could be disappointed. Overall, a good shop to get some lovely, high-quality goth clothes. It's well worth a visit if you're in Whitby.

The Bed and (not included) Breakfast was very cute, with a great location (I suspect breakfast was…read morenot included just because it was the off season). The bed was ornate and brass framed with an unfortunate sag in the middle so we sort of felt like we were sleeping in a squeaky bouncy hammock (I hear they also have rooms with four-posters which might be more comfortable). That said, the sheets, blankets and pillows were very nice. The room also included tea, coffee, a tiny TV and a view over a cute little courtyard (undoubtedly lovely in spring and summer). The en-suite bathroom had a nice bath with a shower but no curtain (we took baths for fear of soaking the whole room). It also had a bunch of candles and a big jar of bubble bath, so there was really no question that a bath was the right choice. The not-included breakfast was served at restaurant beside the courtyard and was only £5 per person so we were quite satisfied. Overall, this place was a great value for the price (£60/night) especially considering the central location. I would go back, but I think I'd request a four-poster.

The Shepherd's Purse is a lovely little cafe with amazing home made cakes! It is a health food shop…read moreat the front, and sells ethical clothing. There is also accommodation available. When we went we had hot chocolate, and hot spiced apple which was very Christmassy (even though it was May, lol) and eventually decided on mississippi mud pie and carrot cake from their huge selection of devilish cakes and tartes. Well worth a trip to Whitby, just for the cakes :)

I've added Venus Trading to my 'goth shops' list as they do sell some goth-style clothing at the back of the shop. They tend to increase the stock of goth clothes during the Whitby Gothic Weekend (and it seems they also increase their prices too!). If you're looking for a gift that's a bit different for someone then this is the place to go. They also have some amusing greetings cards which I always check out when I visit. The clothing they sell varies from 'hippy' to 'goth' so you can definitely buy something that will make you stand out from the crowd here! I tend regularly visit to buy incense, make up and jewellery from Venus Trading but not clothing. They have some great clothes but they're all a bit out of my price range and, as it's not a big shop, they don't have a good range of sizes.

Set at the bottom end of Flowergate, this is a large branch of Mountain Warehouse, set over two…read morefloors, the bottom of which opens onto Whitby harbour, near the swing bridge. The top floor mainly consists of menswear, waterproof/showerproof jackets, shorts, lightweight walking trousers/shirts, running equipment etc. Some own brand, some more expensive and a variety of colours, all set up for the summer. The lower floor consists of similar products, but this time primarily focussed on womenswear and children's wear. There is also a range of camping items on the lower floor, like portable chairs, rucksacks, sleeping bags etc. Both floors also have an impressive range of boots and sandals, as well as hats and gloves in the winter. We happened on this place in the middle of a 20% off sale, so my lightweight coat that already had a £50 discount, had a further £10 knocked off it - bargain! The staff do actually genuinely know there stock too, which was refreshing, being helpful, without pushing the sale, another strong positive in this store's favour.

Then head down into the town. Whitby really is unique, and the shops in the little town are wondrous - I could easily spend hours browsing the various jewelry and gift shops. For lunch the choices are endless, from fish and chips on the beach to one of the lovely restaurants. The beach itself is lovely - check the tide times through as at high tide, the beach shrinks incredibly! and keep your eyes peeled as you can often find interesting shells and the famous Whitby jet lying on the beach.. We always come home with a bag of swag!

Whitby old town has a traditional shopping precinct with every type of gift shop you can think of…read moreincluding the obligatory postcards and rock to the not so common Whitby Jet jewellers making hand made rings, bracelets, necklaces and ear rings. There are a good handful of traditional fish and chip shops /restaurants that are all very good, you can tell this by the queues of people waiting to get seated. All the fish is fresh caught on the day from this very traditional fishing town. At the top of the town lays the ruins of Whitby abbey, which commands its self, looking down over Whitby town, on a dark night with the moon high in the sky the effect is a very eerie one.
