We stopped here on our way from Atlanta to Savanna. It was a good stop. The brisket was moist and delicious. While the ribs still have their membrane they were moist too. The sides were awesome: collard greens- fresh, delicious (especially with a drizzle of the white BBQ sauce, fried okra (fresh!) , kid friendly Mac and cheese (shells and cheddar) sweet potato puffs were VERY sweet- eat for dessert. Hidden Gem! Found this by accident as we were heading to Savannah from Macon. From the moment we walked in, the staff was very friendly and accommodating as we came in as a group of 7 hungry people. I have tried a lot of things on the menu and never been disappointed. However, listen up! I am a sides girl. Sides complete the meal and make me happy and there's are amazing. My top picks are the sweet potato puffs (never seen this before) but they are like sweet potato tater tots covered in sugar and then my next favorite is the potato salad. Being from Texas, I know BRISKET! I travel for work and pass through Metter from time to time. My first visit to Papa Bucks I ordered a pulled pork sandwich. I then noticed you could buy a pound of brisket. I thought..Great! I can get that for dinner later...It never made it out of the parking lot. I sat there and ate it all in the car. LOL My most recent trip back I was mentioning to a lady that was at the counter on how much I loved the brisket. Come to find out she is the owner. Stopped here on our drive back to Atlanta from Savannah. I was surprised how packed it was and how quick the food came out. We shared a meal because the waitress told us it's a lot. I called the store a few days after my lunch to say I think you made a mistake and added "an extra zero" on my bill. I was told "No that's accurate, we charge $3.50 for plates and utensils". With so many great reviews and accolades, we were excited to try this place. After being on the road for three days, it was nice to find a local place serving local food next to the Interstate. My brisket sandwich could have been very good if they had trimmed the fat and if they had a better bread to meat ratio. Usually during the cooking/smoking process the fat cap melts away basting the brisket. Not here. A good 1/2-3/4 inch band was found on two of the three slices of meat. After discarding those pieces, the soft, slightly sweet bun overwhelmed what was left of the protein and the vinegary sauce did little to punch up the flavor of the sandwich. Having just been in Houston, where brisket is King, this was a bit of a disappointment. Just add more meat, trim the fat, and raise the price. Balance is the key to any good sandwich. The brisket was tender and flavorful just overshadowed by unwelcome accompaniments. The pulled pork sammie on the other hand was loaded with meat, and was rated very good by the recipient. The Mac-n-cheese side was forgettable - Lack of seasoning, mushy pasta, and just an unappetizing mound of yellow. I would attempt a repeat visit if ever in the area, despite my reluctance. Amazing and addicting! Large family so ordered 1.5lb of pulled pork, ribs and sides. Pulled pork very tender and ribs had that beautiful dry rub crisp on outside with fall off the bone meat inside. Mac and cheese great, coleslaw incredible and the Scooby snack should be illegal. Not over salted at all like most BBQ places so that was refreshing. Staff so friendly and helpful. Papa Bucks is a home town favorite and an easy go to no matter what day or meal. They've been open for a good while now and they're just as good today as they were when they opened years ago. The man who originally opened it was a sweet as could he and had a great pork recipe. Not long after they opened he passed away and his son took over the business and he sure has done a great job making sure that they ran steady! This place is always on top of it and always functioning smoothly. The only problem we've ever got here is them running out of pork! Which is a good problem for them to have haha. This place has been on food network a couple times and has an incredible challenge you could consider. Ask about the Pigzilla whenever you go in (and good luck if you're up for it!). Everything I've gotten here is fabulous so don't be worried about drifting away from your average pork plate and trying a Scooby snack! I probably lived off of those for a year or so anyways lol. I'm conflicted about this being a 3-star vs a 4-star joint. I've been eating BBQ daily for almost a week now a various places in Florida, Tennessee, and now Georgia. I'm well-versed in all styles and base my opinions on the standards for that style, not my personal preference (pulled pork with SC mustard-based sauce). So The Dog and I went in and ordered a pulled pork plate with mac 'n cheese and sweet puffs, plus a Supreme Scooby Snack with brisket and two sweet teas. Super charming and kind server. Quick to bring refills on sweet tea and brought me out a mess of lemons for my tea when I asked for lemon. The pulled pork plate was cold - well, not fridge-cold but room temperature cold. Even the mac 'n cheese, which was served in a Styrofoam serving cup. The sauce was excellent but the pork itself didn't have much of a smoke flavor. It was moist but due to the temperature, the fattiness of the pork was distracting. The brisket on the Scooby snack was delish. If you go, get the brisket. I enjoyed the concept of the meat on fries loaded with cheese and whatnot. We were supposed to get a free drink upon checking in with Yelp and we showed this to our server when we ordered our drink after sitting down. Yet, the drinks still wound up on the bill. She removed the price of them after we pointed this out. We did discover the desserts as we were getting ready to leave. This is where this place really shines. I got the chocolate 14-layer cake. This stuff is HOMEMADE, hand-cut, and wrapped in Saran Wrap. And it is absolutely DELICIOUS. Sinful. Fantastic! The Dog got the carrot cake - it was good but that 14-layer cake is the schizz-nit! We won't be in town long enough to try out JoMax across the street so I can't compare the two. Ultimately, I'd say this place is worth trying out - get the Scooby Snack of some sort and a slice of that amazing 14-layer cake! read more
