Really enjoy the food here. We started going here when my children were still in baby carriers. Now they are calling us and asking if we want them to pick something up on their drive home. Great variety, freshly cooked and a nice, friendly family run business! The family knows most of their regulars by name and even know the kids that come in from around the neighborhood. Figured I'd update my review. This is still a decent option for "charred" foods. Typical char-type restaurant with a few Greek options often found at places like these. Stuff like, gyros, Saganaki, kebabs, Baklava as well as typical American fast food favorites as in cheeseburgers, BLT's, hot dogs and a lot of fried items. They often offer a special combo of the day and it's priced just above $ 5 dollars, which comes with a side and drink. These days, prices like these for a decent meal are hard to come-by. Since it's Lent season, figured I'd stop in for a lunch of a fried fish sandwich and side salad. The weekday afternoon was busy with repeat customers that are often referred to by name. A nice perk to being a "repeat." The shop is never busy, it's comfortable and approachable whether you're dining solo or wanting to be joined by a few. The place, although dated, was clean and comfortable enough for enjoying the time spent. If you dig typical fast food, you'll get your moneys worth. But these days with more "local" food restaurants offering "made-from-fresh" items (i.e. hand cut fries as opposed to frozen), it's kind of dinosaur in a modern world. IWe called to verify if this restaurant was open because on the internet, it was stated that this restaurant was closed on March 28, 2024. The man who answered was so rude when I attempted to explain my call. The funny thing is we have been customers as recent as a week ago and so to our surprise to read a close notice. I'm not sure why, but I only really ate here within the last year and half. We had passed it by so many times and I'm just mad that we didn't stop earlier. Yes it is a very typical Greek fast food restaurant with all the standards: gyros, burgers, hotdogs and such, but they are doing it way better most others. This is where I go for gyros now, no where else. It's loaded with meat, and the tzatiki is awesome, some places it is not. My daughter loves the burgers, and the curly fries are always a favorite. The other thing is that it's a family owned place, and the owner is the sweetest person I've ever met. She always talks to my kids and is always smiling and friendly. Even though we can't sit inside and eat right now, we still stop by and pick up food to take home. It's worth the trip, and I hope that if enough people do the same I'll be going here for many years to come. read more

Their food like burgers, beefs, and hot dogs, are just average. But their Dinner Specialties like Rotisserie Chicken, Shish Kebob, and Barbecue Ribs Dinners are very good. I used to go there at least a couple times a week until they started including a 3.5% supplemental charge for using a credit card for your purchase. I found that to be so petty that I have quit going there for that reason. I don't believe it's right to punish people for using a credit card. I was a good customer for a very long time. That's too bad for them because I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only person that feels this way. read more

Needed to satisfy a gyro craving and this place did the trick, though I found the gyro meat to be on the salty side. Fries needed salt and fish sandwich was ok, cheese wasn't melted. Big menu. Burgers, dogs, beefs, salads, kebabs, dinner plates. Anything fried, they have that too. If your in the area, I'd give it a try. They can probably satisfy any craving. I thought it was ok, not great. Typical fast food burger, hot dog, etc..place. Big seating areas unlike most fast food places. It has great ventilation, there is absolutely no greasy, smoky place. The food was good but not great. We tried the ribs and they were good but not great. They were not tender and tasty. The hot dog was your typical hot dog. Fries were great, they were actually crispy and very good. I will continue to go there. It's good enough for fast food. The staff are extremely nice and the place is clean and roomy. Plenty of seating. read more

They're all inexpensive, casual, have similar retro menus, and use the same suppliers (e.g. Vienna sausage products and Kronos Gyros). But no two are exactly alike. Papa Chris is a time capsule of the 1980s. The simple décor and yellowish lighting haven't changed. Neither has the food, most of which leans towards starchy, fatty, and/or deep fried. Portions are generous. But the rotisserie chicken is bland and tends to be overcooked. A puddle of grease accumulates under the gyros. You get the picture. What attracts loyalty to this eatery is the ebullient personality of the owner. His energetic presence lights up the dining room. He enjoys chatting, makes people feel welcome, and knows his regular customers by name. read more

Simple, decent sized, poppy bun, fresh, right amount of lettuce tomato onion, all crispy fresh cut. Gyros are like always in Chicago, which means good. Get the plate. Cut the pita. How it's done. It's more food than one person can eat. Yogurt sauce is house made, outstanding. Tomatoes and onion seasoned and pi quaint, will bring tears. This is a classy, family-owned restaurant with great gyros, burgers, Polish and pepper & egg sandwiches. Usually crowded around lunchtime. They have daily specials. Their perch dinner and steak sandwiches are the best! I also like the curly fries and fried zucchini slices. I've been coming here 15+ years and it's a good place to bring kids too. Lots of families come here on weekends after sports with the kids still in baseball or soccer attire. Drop in your business card in the fishtank and you can win a free meal too. After a few visits, you get to know Nick and Pam, the co-owners. Placing an order or picking up makes you a "buddy" right away though. I came here a while ago with just my 2 kids: a one-year old and a four year-old. They had the courtesy to bring the food to my table since they didn't want me to leave the kids unattended at the table. They even checked if I needed anything during the meal, though this is not a full-service restaurant. That makes a big statement about their level of service and will most certainly assure that I will keep coming back here. Every Saturday around noon, there's usually anywhere from 6 to a dozen ham radio guys who gather round for lunch and a nice long and loud session of Geek-speak for at least an hour. They are as much part of the Papa Chris ambience as the people behind the counter. Only downside is they are closed on Sundays. read more

We always count on Papa Chris' to deliver consistent quality, service, and positive attitude which helps especially when we're in a time crunch for lunch. I mean, it's fast food. It's not some elegant steakhouse in downtown Chicago. It's not meant to be, so appreciate it for what it is. Fries were nice and crunchy. Had a small coke and everything cost me $9. Not bad. I would recommend splitting the curly fries if you have a friend with you, I barely put a dent in them. Coming here for 20 years. Great little diner with a nice menu that has good prices. Pork shish kabob is great. So are the gyros and burgers.

The food here is great and reasonably priced. The owners are very friendly. Why I don't give it 5 stars is because they are not open on Sundays. I estimate they are throwing away $150,000.00 a year by being closed. I did the math by counting the cars for one hour exiting the restaurant and multiplying by $10.00 a meal x 12 hours x 52 weeks. This is ridiculous! If they are closing for religious reasons I think God would understand especially if they are giving more to their church on a weekday. There ARE churches that have weekday masses such as Immaculate Conception at Harlem and Talcott. They should take a Monday or a Wednesday off. I feel sorry for their work staff because they are being shorted on pay because of this. I would never suggest getting a job here! read more

The staff was friendly and even though I didn't talk much to them they created a warm and inviting atmosphere. The fries are the thick cut kind and could use a little salt which they supplied.
