We passed by this everytime we went food shopping at Waitrose and decided to try it on a recommendation from a nail technician. They were doing a steady take away business and there are many tables outside to eat at. We went inside and the decor of the place is cool. Our server,Chip(Charles), was attentive and friendly. We all got the cod and chips which was delicious. Tartar sauce was good as were the mushy peas. We topped it off with ice cold beers and it was a fabulous lunch. read more

First meal back in Yorkshire for 27 years so I may not be the expert on chip shops around here anymore but I thought the food was bloody marvelous. We started with the halloumi which was battered and fried (of course it was!), then drizzled with honey. A bit odd at first but really grew on you. I had the plaice and sisters had the the haddock. Delightful flavour in the haddock and even more so for the plaice. Batter was crisp, crunchy and light and not in the least bit greasy. Chips tasted like proper chips to me - ahhh - English tatties just make better chips... Be warned, the portions are massive. My sisters could've shared one medium haddock n chips. I put a decent dent in my plaice but there was still quite a bit left on the table when we stumbled out with very full bellies hours later. read more

Since the restaurant is called Papas fish & chips, so I ordered a fish and chips, it would never go wrong since it is their signature. Hmm... I would say I had tasted a better one in London downtown. It was tasteless. The haddock fish coated with a very thick batter. I ordered the munchy green peas sauce as side, tasteless too. I asked for salt and ketchup for 4 times before the waitresses finally remembered to bring me one. Don't get me wrong, they were very decent abc polite and the service was pleasant. Just the '4 times salt' thing was slightly 'memorable' when I am writing this review. The ambience is good for friends to gather and catch up. The restaurant is 2 storey, but unfortunately I couldn't find them display the cakes which mentioned on the menu as one of their selling point. 2 stars for the ambience, no star for the food. read more
I recently visited this restaurant with a couple of friends. To say the place was busy is an understatement! I had tried to reserve a table online for that evening, but reservations must be made 24 hours in advance if booking over the internet. You can ring the restaurant direct, but I decided to chance it and just turn up. We we're greeted with a queue of people all waiting at the reservations desk. When we got to the front of the queue, we we're advised to take a pager and when a table becomes free, it will light up and vibrate. This wasn't such a bad thing as we we're waiting for another member of our party to turn up. The pager finally went off after about 30-40 minutes of waiting. By that time I wish I had rang ahead to reserve a table, however, we later found out that a couple that had reserved a table for 6.30pm didn't get seated until 7.20pm! We we're taken up to our table and handed the menus - which were newspapers. Quite a novelty! Once all the party had decided we ordered with our waitress, 2x fish and chips and 1 fish, chips and pattie (for those of you who aren't forom the Hull area and don't know what a pattie is, it is mash, sage and onion battered and then deep fried) Shortly after ordering our meals, the table next to us sat down and looked at the menu. They then ordered their meals by which time, our drinks had come. The tea is Yorkhsire Tea and comes in a official Yorkshire Tea teapot. After a while, we were starting to get a little restless for our meals so asked the waitress how much longer it would be. We were told it wouldn't be much longer at which point the people on the next table (who arrived and ordered after us) had their meals brought to the table! We were not impressed to say the least! I My friend then got the attention of our waitress to complain. We were told that there had been a mix up in the kitchen and that ours were getting plated up next. 5 minutes later, our mains arrived. The portion sizes were good and the fish is skinned and boned. The fish and chip meal also comes with peas and a slice of bread and butter. To be honest, the meal was really nice. The food was hot and tasty, it was just such a shame about the service. This would have been a 1 start review had it not been for the food. In conclusion, Good food, awful, unorganised service, probably down to poor management. read more

Went to York on holiday and tried a decent number of chippies in the area, Papa's was one of the best we tried. Good quality food and huge portions! The guy who served us (I believe his name was Jake) was very welcoming and chatted with us while we waited for the food. Overall we were quite impressed with the this little place! read more

Disappointing . Food poor - fish wet and didn't taste fresh, could not eat bread as spread was greasy and tasted like cheap margarine. Left a lot of the food. Will not return -. staff did not seem so understand how poor food was - even though a lot of food was left on both plates. I'm amazed they have good reviews based on the quality of food we had. read more

Myself and my wife are just moving into the area and thought we would try papas last night. We was going into the restaurant but decided to eat outside as it was a warm evening so used the takeaway. On arrival there was a small queue and waited to place our order. One thing we noticed was the amount of flies buzzing around the inside of the takeaway, which wasn't a nice thing to see. Once we received our fish and chips we went to the outside area that wasn't used at the time. we found it difficult to find a table that didnt have bird poo on. The area was a total disgrace with loose floor tiles, rubble that was just left, bricks loose around posts, tables and chairs thrown all over the place covered again in Bird poo. empty bottles just left on tables. weeds all over the place. Bins that where full to top, Tables chairs in need of repair and painting.the area need a complete overall and with a little pride and effort could be a really nice area due to the lovely plant area around. The whole experience of eating outside was spoilt totally by the surroundings. There is a sign saying uk's best fish and chips its a crying shame you dont give the same care and attention to the surrounding area. awaiting your reply read more

Haven't even been but wanted to point out that the only review on here is completely unfair as he complains endlessly about poor service despite not bothering to book and then finding the place incredibly busy, no surprise it took a while for the food to come, if you're in a hurry go to Macdonalds next door. He said the food was good and that should merit at least 3 or 4 stars do hopefully this review will redress the balance. Tripadvisor ratings: 67% 5* 19% 4* then 8/4/2% 3/2/1* says it all don't bother with yelp read more
