As it is a residential area, there's no problem with stopping your car to browse the library. Standing on a single post (a lathed bedpost?), the library has a single door. Someone cleverly put a lip over the door to protect the books and it has a metal roof. Some of the paint is peeling a bit thanks to the Canadian weather. Inside, simply stuffed with books. Half hardcovers and half paperbacks, it's a broad selection of titles with a thriller, some summer reading and such. Looks great! This is charter number 30224 and it has the steward's name listed with this caption, "This is a family library, 5 people to make this work. My lovely daughter in law gave us the idea, my son supplied the wood for the door and plexiglass, hubby built the library during the summer heat, and finally my brother put a beautiful copper roof on it. The look on my grand child's face when she picked her first book out was priceless. I have met some wonderful people out by the library, it couldn't be any better." The red metal box is almost all plexiglass and stands on a single wooden post. The library door is secured with a spring catch. Inside are two shelves of neatly stacked paperbacks in "pre-loved" condition. Mostly fiction, it was easy enough to add two from my own library. None of the existing books caught my eye. I did not find this library in the Little Free Library database or map, but the plaque mounted on it says, "Education has been key to this neighbourhood for more than a hundred and fifty years. Residents are familiar with the impressive edifice of the Wellington Street Public School designed by architect Neil Darrach and built in 1898. The school operated until the end of 2009 when the students shifted to Pierre Elliott Trudeau French Immersion school. Subsequently, the building hosted Algoma University and the STEAM Centre, and will be utilized for the foreseeable future by staff of St. Joseph's Health Care. Rewind back to the 1850's - the London & Port Stanley Railway had just been established to the east, and the community was growing. This property was known as the David Farm, and a large brick four-room school called the 'Central School' was built on this site. One of the early principals, Mr. W.R. Bigg, introduced the teaching of science, even putting on lectures and experiments for the general public. Not on Pleasant Street exactly, but that's the closest since this Little Free Library is located on…read morethe Saint Thomas Elevated Park where it crosses Pleasant Street. This is the second from this organization that I've seen today and like the other, it is in excellent condition. The library includes a large explanation on the side. It reads, "Before the name 'St. Thomas' took hold, the small settlement in this area was known as 'Kettle Creek Village', a reference to the waterway in the nearby valley. Daniel Rapelje was one of the original settlers and had a farm here, later laying out the plan of subdivision and making land available for the Church that was completed in 1824. Today, the Church is still standing and is referenced locally as 'Old St. Thomas Church'. After the Church opened, some visitors began referring to the community as 'Saint Thomas', which may have served also as an acknowledgement of Col. Thomas Talbot, the founder of the Talbot Settlement. Eventually, the post office in the area was named 'St. Thomas' and the name stuck. 'Kettle Creek Village' is the perfect name for this neighbourhood, recognizing the past as well as connecting to the waterway and ultimately the Great Lakes." Three shelves in this library, a little bare but the location probably doesn't get a lot of reading traffic. Mostly paperbacks which I tidied. All in good condition. I happened to spot this library as I was making my way through St. Thomas and had to stop. Inside, a single shelf of books that were in good shape despite the slight exposure to the elements. A couple of retired library books but some paperbacks that might be worth reading. I was able to add two from my box of books that I am distributing as I reduce my own home library. It is on a residential street so there is no problem stopping to check it out.
