They have great recommendations, will order taxis for you and suggest activities and restaurants. They all work so hard- even the manager is not above serving breakfast, painting trim, carrying new mattresses up the stairs! etc. But they always have time to stop and ask you what you need or just chat. Plus, remarkably, they are never ever on their personal cell phones. I didn't even know they made employees like this anymore! HIGHLY recommended.

We had booked transportation, restaurants, tours, tastings, a full four day itinerary that we had spent months crafting to try and make perfect for this very special occassion in a very special city. This was all upended when bad weather rerouted our flight, missing our connection, with no viable options to rebook an entire group of 10 people in time to enjoy the trip. My wife was devastated, in tears, the trip she had been looking forward to all year completely ruined at no fault of her own. I called to see what Quinta Real could honor our reservation by booking a different date, a credit, a discount, or ANYTHING to ease the pain. We wanted to come back (and we will be, just not with this hotel), and we wanted to continue working with Quinta Real to make this mutually beneficial for both parties. Instead, they could not care less and are keeping the entire thing, four nights to the tune of thousands of dollars in exchange for not having to lift a finger to do anything for 10 guests now. Most important of all, however, is the lack of any professionalism, sympathy, politeness, or kind words under these special circumstances--they simply don't care. The human element of compassion is what I care about when I consider or recommend a place. I do not recommend Quinta Real--they have shown that they lack this element when it matters most.

There's a courtyard in the middle that contains a restaurant. There was complimentary breakfast during our stay here and the food was actually pretty good; I especially liked the chilaquiles. There's also a rooftop terrace with a small pool. Note that there are no elevators so you will have to carry your luggage up the few floors. Because it's on the Andador Turistico area and Calle Macedonia Alcala, one of the intersections is pedestrian only which is convenient. The other intersection has a decent amount of cars and noise but not too much. Note that they do not allow visitors after 11pm and they close the front door after a certain point in the evening and you have to ring the bell to enter at night. It was really interesting to be in the calm and quiet of our room and then immediately walk out to the busy streets. However, it's a great hotel if you want to be in the center of everything.

The hotel itself is downtown, so the noise level is high on the street, but with the balcony doors closed it blocked out much of the noise. I slept well the whole trip. It is also awesome to have a room with a balcony so you can check out the life going on outside your room (so much life!), so if you like that option, make sure to request a room with a balcony. Every morning you get a complimentary breakfast of Mexican pastries, juice, coffee, fruit, yogurt, and granola - it's delicious. You also get one complimentary upgrade for a meal, and we got the pork tamale in mole sauce. So rich, so tasty. You get to sit in the common area, surrounded by plants, served by nice staff, eating your free breakfast. Nice way to start the day! There is also a great coffee shop right around the corner from the hotel, if you like your latte in the morning. Being downtown is also a great bonus for this hotel. I loved it!! Breakfast was served in a dining room area right off of the registration area. Each morning you are greeted with a bread basket with toast, butter & jam. Followed by coffee, I paid the extra $40pesos for a cafe latte. A fruit & yogurt plate and a plate of the day, I believe they were all vegetarian. Everything was pretty to look at and a delicious meal to start your day. Staff was all super friendly, always greeted you and the front desk staff answered all my questions and provided assistance with taxis and tour drivers. Location is far enough away from the crowds and noise of the zocalo and cathedral but close enough to walk to everything. I would recommend staying at this hotel.

Every day we would inform the front desk that we had no hot water and all we were told was that they would look into it. The issue was not resolved until the 6th day. Management did not offer any real apology, or compensation for the inconvenience. When we asked why they didn't move us to another room we were told the hotel was full. And if there is a wedding reception or some other event planned, the staff will have the room appropriately decked-out. We ate two wonderful lunches here, at tables under the columned arched areas alongside the buildings but facing out on the landscaping. One occasion as on a Sunday and there was a very well-dressed and formal mariachi quartet. Not with sombreros, but in very nice tan suits. They were very courteous, moved about unobtrusively and were not loudly banging out the music as you might be familiar with at less classy facilities. This group was as classy as the building. Menu was interesting and offered some samplers. One that I tried was of three moles, those complicated sauces that Oaxaca is known for. There was a different mole for a pork, beef and chicken dish. Served with tortillas it was nice as well as interesting. But be prepared for a formal, dignified, yet cold and distant waiter. And it took forever on both occasions to get service. Plan on a two hour lunch, for example. And prices are high, much higher than you will find in the area. But then again, there are not that many ancient convents that have been preserved, are there?
