Because of this, and the fact that it was jammed full of locals and students when I went in, I assumed it would be something special. Unfortunately, perhaps due to the Friday night rush of business, I was left slightly disappointed - I ordered just chips and scraps, and was served rather slowly for such a simple order. The shop front entices you in with its cheeky appearance and what I think is a brilliant name for a fish restaurant, and on my visit the takeaway was packed (it was around 5PM so that made sense), however service was quicker than I expected it to be. What struck me about the cod & chips I got was the utter lack of grease, which made a refreshing change as I didn't have to wipe my lips after every bite and I also felt slightly less guilty about eating deep-fried goods. They tasted splendid to be honest, and the prices were so reasonable that I'm thinking of going back and checking out the restaurant. It's won awards, and I can see why.

Think of something the size of your head, add salt & vinegar & dive in. The place was opened under some controversy as it was a pub conversion that had been a curry house. Another chippy caused some anger with the other chippys in the area. Thus the windows have been smashed in on a few occasions. But I think that's over now. The layout is clean with historical photos of Keighley blown up & used as wallpaper. A good touch that shows the roots of the town. Now if they'd only asked me before they used my photos.... :)

Before visiting Brett's, I had been satisfied with the other two standard Headingley chippies, Midgley's and Bryan's (both excellent) but, as I realised on my first visit, Brett's outshines both. There are many, many reasons for this; firstly, it just feels like a chippy - always a long queue of cold Leodensians dying for something warm and fattening, staff who yell orders to each other and have aprons covered in chip fat, and a couple of rickety sheltered benches just outside the shop for those who can't wait until they get home. On top of this, the setting (inside an old, ivy-covered terraced house on North Lane) makes Brett's both quaint and perfectly located in equal measure. Whether you've been at the cricket, the rugby, or just on a ten hour drinking binge, Brett's is always a welcome sight. But it is the food, of course, which makes the biggest difference. Rumour has it that the reason that Brett's batter tastes crispier than anywhere else is down to the use of beef fat, rather than vegetable oil - a stroke of genius I'm sure you'd agree (as well as making the food taste better, it also means there are no vegetarians ahead of you in the queue!). The cod and haddock itself tastes and feels fresher than any other Leeds fishery I have stumbled upon, and the chips are just glorious. Go to Brett's. Go now.
