I battled the BQE to get to Park Slope from Queens for these classes - that's how good they are! The whole premise of kids playing and learning outdoors appealed to the educator in me; the one who laments the lack of play time for children in today's testing-driven world. My daughter and I truly had some of the best weeks of our lives during those classes and made some beautiful memories. Meghan was an exceptional teacher who was able to make the outdoors come alive for children. The activities designed by Tinkergarten helped children explore their surroundings, flex their imaginations, and learn deeply about themselves and their world through play. The activities were fun, engaging, and truly got you learning by getting your hands dirty! I cannot say enough wonderful things about Tinkergarten. My only regret was that our "semester" ended. It was a bittersweet end of class. My daughter still talks about Miss Meghan and remembers, vividly and fondly, all the different activities we did. An added treat to Tinkergarten is their vast collection of activities that you can find on their website (for free!!) As a working mother I don't always have time to prepare activities for my child. What I appreciate most about Tinkergarten activities is that they require minimal to no preparation. They can also be done ANYWHERE! While it's great to go on a "bell hunt" in an outdoor space where you can run around, I've also been able to use it in my small home. We've put a "compass" on our head not just at a park, but when we walk up the block to go to our nearby deli. We've also made a "magic carpet" using household items when it's raining outside. I can't say enough great things about the school. The grounds are beautiful, complete with a huge private lawn and playground for the kids to run around. The Director of the school, Susan, greets everyone by name each morning. My son's teachers - Miss Emily, Miss Peggy, and Miss Stephanie - are so terrific with the kids and incredibly experienced (I believe Miss Emily and Miss Peggy have been teaching at Dillon for over 20 years and Miss Stephanie is a recent graduate of St. Joseph's education and early childhood development program). The families seem to come from all over the Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and Bed Stuy areas. Dillon is not the closest school to our home, but we picked it after a strong recommendation from the New York Parents League's Brooklyn Advisor, and couldn't be happier with our choice.

Maple Street School is a vibrant, friendly, family-type community of people that care about raising up children to be thoughtful, curious, kind, and brave. There is such an intentional variety of activities throughout the day and plenty of active time, both in and outside the school. They really involve the community and neighborhood, and help the children cultivate relationships with the local folks they see every day. The teachers/staff support families and whatever specific needs they may have regarding their children. Like any growing family, there are things that will shift and change along the way as new needs are seen/met. It's not always easy to coordinate hundreds of families, so sometimes we just have to embrace the chaos and jump in with both feet to help! We're glad we joined early on, when our daughter was newly 2, so we have lots of time with our Maple Street folks!

Over these past few months, our son has grown into a happy, talkative little guy, counting in both English and Spanish and saying so many words! He loves all the activities they do at Pollitos--music, singing, artwork, and outdoor play. Every day when I drop off my son, I feel like I am dropping him off with his sweet aunties who scoop him up with kisses and hellos.
