1. Expensive : Watch the amount of Tests and meds that are recommended. Don't be afraid to ask if they are absolutely needed. (The up sell is apparent) 2. Poor communication skills- No call back from the DR after leaving messages 3 days in a row. (Note, : I noticed another yelp review stated Dr K called her and asked why she was harassing her staff because the customer had called 3 days in a row. So seems to be Dr K's way.) 3. Lack of urgency in emergencies if you do not have an appointment. This is my opinion and my review. My family has used Park Street Vet for several years with 2 dogs and a cat. Though staff and Dr. K is a friendly office, I found over time Dr K is quick to recom mend tests and follow ups, to the point you have to ask "Is this absolutely necessary." Your bill can add up quick . We also found Park Street Vet closes the office on the dot at the end of the day. They wait for no one. I am withdrawing my pet from this office for the above reasons and for a recent incident. I had called in despair the office to discuss putting my cat down. She was 20 and had stopped eating. I called at 4 p.m and asked if the Dr could see her today. I was told they are booked up and close at 5. I asked for 10 mins of their time and instead was given a description of euthanasia and was told again, they close at 5. I Called the 2nd day at 10 a.m. asking for the Dr. or Sherry the office manager. Had to leave another message with receptionist. The 3rd day with no call back, I left a message on the office VM stating I had waited 3 days and my cat has now passed and I would like a call back. Dr K's response was by email Her exact words: "if you want quicker access to the doctor, to be nice to the staff, they are gatekeepers" Hmmmm, no thanks Dr. K. when your beloved pet is dying and you call your vet and ask for a returned call and it never comes, by the 3rd day you bet i expressed my opinion to the only person answering the phone. FYI, most Vets call within the same day after hours if they need to. read more

I've had some decent experiences here, but feel like this place is quick to recommend costly diagnostics and doesn't do any empirical diagnosis or treatment. My dog has a chronic issue and rather than providing meds over the phone I was required to come in every time which is expensive and unnecessary. Additionally, my dog had 2 more serious issues and both times I opted for their recommended tests and both times the results were inconclusive! I feel like it's at a point of fool me twice shame on me. read more

I own Pet Companions, Bed and Biscuit in Reading for 34 years, First Cage less Doggie Hotel in the County. I was caring for a dog, owners have been a client for 20 years. On this pup's first day, we noticed blood in her urine, I called her Vet which was Park St Veterinary Clinic in North Reading. I took pics and emailed them to the clinic, so they could see what I was seeing. The owner of the pup took in a urine sample, 2 weeks earlier, because of some blood She was told to watch it. I bring the Pup in, her bladder was empty so no urine to test. Both Dr. Kastner and Dr Hascall thought this pup was in Heat Can you imagine, they could not tell if the dog was in Heat! They refused to give antibiotics, because that was their diagnosis. I insisted she was not in Heat, because dogs would be bothering and they weren't. I left the clinic and called the Mom who was out of the Country. I explained the situation and she agreed that she wanted her pup on antibiotics This poor pup suffered with a UTI, which is very painful, for almost a month, because the doctors were adamant that she was in Heat. I called last Thursday to talk to Dr. Kastner about my experience. I called 3 times and she called mr back. She said hello, not using my name but another women's. I was personally thinking, pay attention to details, and know who you are calling! Dr Kastner first words to me, were why are you harassing my Staff? I said, calling 3 times since Thursday is harassment when I have not received a call back? Maybe that is your protocol and I wasn't patient enough, I don't know. My Vet, returns his calls on the same day. Maybe you were not interested in my experience with your practice! Today when you called you were rude, condescending and unprofessional, as you called me a babysitter and someone who picks up poop all day! I did that, 34 years ago and it never bothered me, I know who I am and what I do for the Community. I am sure you are not aware, so I will tell you. I have fostered over 150 dogs from the South for Free, when Clients lost their heat, I provided free care and sometimes, 34 years later, I do pick up poop! I will NEVER go to your clinic again and will no longer recommend Park Street Vet, like I have before. If my clients use you and their pup is sick, I will go to my Vet who does know the difference between being in Heat and a UTI Being in the dog world, I interact with Veterinarians and hold them in high regard. I have Never complained about a Veterinarian, before this. read more

But he did! In Oct 2010, he seemed a little off, so after another ultrasound look, we were advised to try acupuncture with DR KASTNER @ PARK ST VET. After 3-4 visits, I noticed that his pale tongue and gums regained a normal color. Dr. Kastner also prescribed an herb to help with blood flow. In May 2011, we did an ultrasound in Boston and were told the tumor has greatly spread and he now has days, weeks, no more than a month. We were crushed. Meeting Sparky, you would never know there is anything going on. Well, Sparky proved them wrong, because he had a great summer! The acupuncture he receives @ Park St keeps Sparky's blood flowing well, energy level up, he is still jumping, enjoying his daily walks, eating great and doesn't appear to be in any discomfort. Even his personality has changed, has become more relaxed. We are completely convinced he would not be with us today without his acupuncture! The entire staff at Park St vet are wonderful to work with, very friendly, knowledgeable and compassionate. Hands down THE BEST. From the moment you walk in they are so sweet and true animals lovers. My dog does not enjoy the vet but over time now it not fearful to walk in and sometimes even wags! They get down on the floor with him, give him massages and kisses to ease him. The vet and vet techs all sit on the floor when giving shots and/or exams and are really are the best. They take so much time with you, answering all of your questions and I never feel rushed in the slightest. Just all around lovely, sweet and knowledgable. You will not find a better vet!! read more

All the ladies at Park Street know my dog....he goes in once a year but they all know and love him. He only goes there because my gf's ex used to work there....it's a little far from home, I know Angell would be closer, but the vets there are wonderful, sweet, and highly skilled. The personal attention that he gets because it's a smaller vet makes up for a little extra drive. I'd recommend them to anyone who wants a more personal vet experience. read more

I'm not very big into writing reviews, but I feel compelled to leave a review for Dr. Kastner and the wonderful staff at Park Street Vet. I have an EXTREMELY difficult dog-- she is a rescue and clearly suffered some severe trauma at the hands of humans in her former life. I have been to at least three other vets, none of which have been able to deal with my dog's extreme fear and fear-driven aggression. Prior to finding Park Street, going to the vet's office was a horribly anxiety-inducing situation - for both me and my dog. I am SO THANKFUL to have found Dr. Kastner and her amazing staff. They are calm, patient, gentle, caring, knowledgable -- all of the things you could possibly want from a vet. My dog still shakes like a leaf every time we have to go in, but I was so pleased that at her last visit she was scared but calm - no freak-outs whatsoever! Additionally, Dr. Kastner seems very knowledgable (diagnosed my dog with a somewhat rare condition that was completely overlooked by another vet, then helped us with a course of action to manage the symptoms). I have dealt with all of the vet techs on multiple occasions, and they are all kind, compassionate and knowledgable as well. I cannot recommend Park Street enough, particularly if your animal has any fear-based behavioral issues. I feel very lucky to have found them! read more

I have always had a problem finding a good vet despite moving all over the country. I am very pleased to finally find one I like. The girls that work there were very sweet to my cat and I felt like they really cared about her. Prices seemed reasonable or fairly priced. Everyone who helped me and my kitty explained things thoroughly and answered all of my questions. So far I've only been there for an exam and vaccine. I will definitely continue to use this vet. read more

I am very fond of Dr. Kastner that I believe is the prominent veterinarian at the Park Street Hospital in North Reading, MA. I was originally referred to her from a cat owner that was frustrated with results from other vets in the area nailing down an illness with her cat. She believed Dr. Kastner was special in her approach. I agree. However, in my opinion over a 10-year relationship with the group, I feel it lacks some stable consistency over a long period that I found troubling. Please understand that when we as owners with our animals will tend to find fault in everyone else; and thus being said, our veterinarians are expected to be "miracle makers". When one's pet is sick, it is indeed the most stressful experience for the pet's human family to grasp. So, when the diagnosis is shattering, and an expensive payout seems exorbitant, it is always inherent for pet owners to want to blame the vet and hospital staff. Keep in mind, these "angels of mercy" in almost all cases do not pursue this discipline for the rewards of fortune - but primarily for the love of animals. In my case, I ultimately chose to find another veterinarian closer to my residency and a more consistent staff of personnel that I felt comfortable with in regular visits. My Wife and I couldn't say enough good things about these people. We had a Yorkie with a lot of health issues. He's finally moved on, but Joey was well known by Dr. Kastner and the crew. They were always very caring, sympathetic and realistic with procedures and costs. Maybe because they knew even reasonable care for Joey still covered their mortgage! Bailey, a 10 y/old Golden diagnosed with a fractured wrist that would never heal properly several yrs ago, was on Rymadel and Dasyquin and continued to walk with a progressive limp. I knew he was in constant pain. A co-worker suggested accupuncture. Bailey limped into Dr. Kastner's office and he's be walking and running normally ever since. It has now been what.. 3 years since I started taking my pup to Park Street Vet? And I still love it and rave about it to every pet owner I meet! My pooch had a rough few months of tummy troubles (including one scary midnight trip to the emergency vet) last year and Dr. Kastner was wonderful about it all. She prescribed food and meds to help. She could have easily ordered a whole round of expensive tests and I would have signed on the dotted line because, come on, my dog *is* my baby. Luckily, she has the common sense/ethics to not put animals through unnecessary stress. And once we found out the food wasn't helping, she even let me return the rest of the case I had purchased. The staff even called about once a week to follow up (if only human doctors did that!). Finally, with her (and the wonderful staff's) help, and without excessive testing, we finally solved the tummy troubles and my dog is back to his usual squirrel chasing/butt licking self! read more
