However, once you enter, you are transported into a beautiful church. Luckily for us, there was an evening mass when we went and so we decided to stay. It's absolutely beautiful inside. Highly recommend visiting this church if you're just passing by or seeking refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city.

My grandmother was laid to rest days before my trip and I truly enjoyed stepping in here. The lady at the desk was friendly and welcoming. I immediately felt a sense of relief. I looked at the architecture in awe. I even places a prayer request in their designated spot. I left feeling more a peace than ever. This wasn't on our list of places to see, but so worth it.

Sacré-Cœur rewards the climb with one of those views that make Paris seem almost impossibly…read morebeautiful. Walking up through Montmartre is good exercise in its own right, with the staircases near the top providing a wonderfully direct final approach as the white basilica rises above you. The surrounding neighborhood is beyond charming, and reaching the summit feels like a fitting culmination of exploring one of the city's most distinctive quarters. Once there, the sweeping view across Paris is spectacular, particularly from the broad steps beneath the basilica. The Romano-Byzantine architecture is striking up close, while the enormous gold mosaic inside gives you another reason to step away from the panorama and enter the church. Few places capture Paris quite so completely: beautiful architecture, a lively neighborhood, and that extraordinary city unfolding beneath you.

If I have, it was well over a decade ago, and I have seen many churches in the intervening years. What I do know is that I've stood outside it several times, to admire the church as well as the iconic view of Paris from its front steps. We had intended to go inside the basilica on our recent family visit, but we had a sick child and the line was long and exposed to the sun. There were a ton of people up there, as dense a crowd as we saw all trip, everyone trying to enjoy the same viewpoint. Luckily, there was plenty of that to go around. We spent some time admiring the city and taking pictures (my father-in-law's one souvenir was that we send him a family photo from Sacré-Coeur), then wound our way downhill through charming Montmartre. Maybe next time I'll venture into the church, but it's worth going just to walk around outside.

Back in ancient times, the upper levels were reserved for royalty and the kind and the lower level was for the palace staff. This portrayed the divine authority of medieval kings. Even though we initially missed our 1pm entry, we were able to come in at 3pm by the skin of our teeth. When you first come in, there is a ground level gift shop that you can peruse. I got a beautiful felt and sequin ornament and we also picked up a couple of gifts for family as well. Once you make your way to the chapel portion, be prepared to be amazed. My jaw hit the floor as I took in all of the gorgeous stained glass and the way the light filters in and just makes all of the jewel tones sparkle. Once you have your fill of picture taking I do suggest that you relish in the moment and just take it in. Whether or not you are religious, it is worth taking the time to visit and bask in it. I was so glad that we got the opportunity to visit Saint-Chapelle as we were not able to go inside Notre Dame during this visit. The exterior of this chapel in no way can compare to the interior experience.

You can come to pray or to listen to the music in the gigantic nave. There are many concerts played in the church: organs but also piano or choirs. Very worthy plays. The church looked a bit run down and dark inside. Also the glass window panes were very beautiful and colorful The church was built in the late 1800s and wasn't completed until early 1900s. So this is not a very old church compared to the other churches in Paris.
