Beyond the palace, there is an extensive park that features lakes, grottoes, wells, fountains, etc. The initiation well is a must. It consists of a spiral staircase with 9 platforms. Some plays bussa nova, some plays folk songs. I come here every morning in Lisbon to watch the sunrise while sipping my tea. This small spot is right in front of my hotel. In the afternoon and during sunset, the city below is painted with different scenes that enchant me all day long. To the left, there's a cafe, and on the right, there's a view of Tagus River. It's a beautiful palace and what makes it stand out from others is the bright yellow paint. Lots of cool look outs and each viewing room was well kept. I like how there are various pathways from here to get to other landmarks in Sintra (we used Google Maps). I read a lot about what public transportation to take and it goes from a train to a bus, but honestly the uber was so affordable so it was nice to only spend 30-45 minutes on there and if you have more than one person, could be worth it. There's a bit of a uphill walk to get to the entrance as an FYI.

I took a tour option of the palace to avoid lines. But you can easily get here by train or bus. When I came here the inside was still under construction, so my tour guide recommended that we just tour the outside since inside would only be about 15 minutes. I love how you can see the three ways this building was made, definitely worth taking a tour to understand this place importance. However, you can still appreciate the tile work, views, intention, and colors of this historic palace.

It is a dream of "1001 Nights" and must have been a fantastic place to be in its golden days - full of exotic, Indian furniture and in-house palm trees. The palace only got restaurated recently and the works are not yet completed. Unfortunately, it is not planned to furnish the place again - so the visitor is dependend on old photographs to get the real feeling for the former interior. The place is open to visitors and is used for concerts and weddings. The park is not yet back to its former glory but since it is a promising tourist location, some labour and money is being invested to get it back in shape (our visit took place in April 2011).

It's a nice spot actually, you can walk along the river and enjoy some nice views, although my husband's plan of a daily morning run never materialized, as all the walking in Lisbon took a toll on the legs. Nonetheless, the view is beautiful, and the sculptures along the walk are intriguing. There are plenty of restaurants, as well as some structures that look like concert halls, and at one end there is the shopping center.

If you're looking to hug a tree, you should look elsewhere. If you're into open areas where people can gather and stroll around, this might be your spot. My feet were on fire from climbing all those hills up and down all day so I was actually thrilled to see flat terrain for once...and so were my feet. There's nice sculptures and fresh breeze to soak in while overlooking the boasting new metropolis in Lisboa.
