While it's very pretty, there wasn't as much to do as our first tour (Quinta de Regaleria) but they do have extensive gardens. Prepare to walk... a lot! If I could do it over I would have picked Peña Palace to replace it. Still worth a go since the architecture and buildings were very lovely.

It is a dream of "1001 Nights" and must have been a fantastic place to be in its golden days - full of exotic, Indian furniture and in-house palm trees. The palace only got restaurated recently and the works are not yet completed. Unfortunately, it is not planned to furnish the place again - so the visitor is dependend on old photographs to get the real feeling for the former interior. The place is open to visitors and is used for concerts and weddings. The park is not yet back to its former glory but since it is a promising tourist location, some labour and money is being invested to get it back in shape (our visit took place in April 2011).

A panoramic view of the city…read more A different musician plays during the daytime. It seems well organized: at 11:30, another one comes to replace, with his own guitar and emplifer. Some plays bussa nova, some plays folk songs. I come here every morning in Lisbon to watch the sunrise while sipping my tea. This small spot is right in front of my hotel. In the afternoon and during sunset, the city below is painted with different scenes that enchant me all day long. To the left, there's a cafe, and on the right, there's a view of Tagus River. Unfortunately, the small garden below is locked this time.

It also holds events such as the Lisbon Book Fair. My husband and I walked through this park when we were on vacation. We enjoyed our stroll.

If you are looking for something to do off the beaten path, to escape the mobs, or just a peaceful place to have a picnic, this is a great option. This park is part of the Raposa Valley (fox valley), on the edge of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Very close to the old town / historical centre, and Sintra's train station.

The employee is one of those few Portuguese that plays dumb as soon as they hear a word of English. My husband is American, I'm Portuguese. She heard us speak in English and was surprised when I addressed her in Portuguese with our order. She proceeds to tell me she doesn't understand what a 'garoto' is because she doesn't know 'American words'. When I asked her to confirm she didn't know what a garoto was she had the decency of looking embarrassed and promptly 'remembered' what it was. Next I ordered a 'torrada com manteiga' and she served us a thin slide of whole wheat bread sprinkled with oreganos (you can't make this stuff up). I had her redo it minus the herbs and she still argued she always makes it that way. I mean if you want to deal with the village idiot in a decrepit park this is the place to visit.

The park dates back to 1969 which is well after the passing of Calouste Gulbenkian. It is over 19 acres in size and has two lakes inside. Interestingly, the Spanish Embassy used to be here!
