Parthenon Gyros is the best place to go in Madison for Gyros! It has been a fun Madison institution for decades currently located right on State Street. They have great fast, friendly, customer service! Please be aware they do no take cash. They serve traditional gyros but they also switch it up a little bit by offering larger mega gyros with a-lot more meat, spicy gyros, chicken gyros, vegetarian, salads, gyro plates, fries, cheese dipping sauce, etc. Every time I have been there so far, the food has been served hot and fresh! I love their gyros especially with their incredible tzatziki sauce served their super crispy fries that I enjoy ordering with a side of cheese to dip in!!! Yum!!! I absolutely love their Mediterranean Greek/College fraternity ambience/decoration inside especially the beautiful upstairs outdoor dining patio and balcony that overlooks State Street that is open during the warmer months! I hate to give negative reviews for small businesses/family owned businesses like this, but I think it's only fair that customers have an accurate expectation for restaurants/food. I ordered takeout from Parthenon gyros ~8pm on a Sunday. I wanted to try it specifically after hearing about their gyros. I heard that they were super tasty and fresh. I read on their website that they make the blend of gyro meat themselves which I thought is great. I ordered a freaky Greek plate and a Greek salad (because you can't substitute salad instead of fries on the Greek plate - not even for an up charge). The first things I noticed were the prices. I know it's by the capital, but still more expensive than I would have expected or liked ($18.52 for the plate, $8.55 for the salad). I picked up my food and drove home, only to find that my order was missing the Greek salad (which I was charged for). I was bummed because I was really wanting the salad, but I wasn't going to drive all the way back over there. I called them and the employee on the phone was really nice about it but told me I had to call back the next morning to get a refund for that item. I did that, and got a refund but that was it. As far as the food I did get, unfortunately it was a disappointment. The skewered grilled chicken breast was so dry. Not even the tzatziki could save the chicken. The gyro meat was ok, but nothing special and slightly dry/hard as well. Maybe because it was later at night? I'm not sure. In general it was just not a great experience. On the bright side, the tzatziki sauce was good (also homemade) and the pitas were nice and thick and soft. I was not impressed by Parthenon Gyros. I might consider giving them another try in the future if I can get there earlier in the day for fresher food and make sure that I get all the items I order. I will not, however, attempt the chicken again and I wouldn't recommend that item to others. read more

The gyros suck because there's a problem and they refuse to accept cash and they insist on credit card and debit cards only. I don't think this is fair that many people are being turned away because they don't have a credit card and or a debit card. You people need to start accepting cash as a form of payment. There's been many times that when I was on state street and I was really in the mood for a gyro but because of your credit card and or debit cards only, I had no choice but to get on the Madison metro city public transit bus and take a bus to other gyro places in Madison. I wonder exactly how many potential customers you people have lost because of this nonsense of credit cards and debit cards only. I am not the only potential customer that had to walk away from Parthenon gyros because of your so called credit cards and debit cards only.. These people must have been on Valium and no apology for the long wait. Easily the best gyro I've ever eaten. Parthenon is what gyro dreams are made of. I recently discovered gyros a few years ago when hubs introduced me to them. He always mentioned Parthenon's from his early 20s when him and his friends would get trashed and walk to Parthenons (lol). We live out of state so we don't get to go often but on our last trip, we decided we HAD to go. We walked down from the Farmers Market and surprisingly, it wasn't too busy. We had a short wait in line with a super fun staff! I've never heard "Opa!" yelled so many times! It is a fun restaurant!!! For around $10 you get a huuuuge gyro with cucumber sauce, tomato, onion, a drink and delicious fries! A very good deal for the amount of food. The gyro comes out with so much meat, you have to eat off the top before you can even consider folding the pita to eat! Bonus: they give a heaping amount of sauce and toppings! This was our first experience at this well known gyro spot. We each went for the classic lamb Gyro and it was extremely tasty!! Made up of fresh tomatoes/onions, seasoned lamb/beef, and house made tzatziki sauce topped on fluffy pita bread. We took our order outside and sat at a table on state street. Nothing that was Parthenon's fault (the driver was just not picking it up for some reason) but the food came about an hour late. A classic standby. I've been going to Parthenon since I was a kid and they've maintained their quality over the years. As a small child living in Racine, there were Greek family restaurants (and thus, gyros) available on what felt like every corner. There are now a few places in and around Madison that offer them, but Parthenon has been carrying the torch a lot longer than most. Portions are large, the fries are crispy, the meat is greasy, and tzatziki doesn't come out of a jar. They've always humored my request for no onions and the counter people do heroic work with the late night crowd. The only spot for improvement is with delivery - I've ordered a couple of times and have either had missing items (a tzatziki-less sandwich is no fun) or it's taken so long that the items are somewhat soggy. Food's always better when you dine out, though, so it's just more motivation to visit the lovely owners and their shop in person. read more

These are the best gyros in Madison! And you can't beat the central location and the great service.

Never had a gyoro before honestly. Very happy with them though! Meat is very tasty and Taziki sauce is great with the pita bread. I ordered the spicy gyro and was honestly disappointed in the spiciness. Wasn't very spicy at all, with just a handful of jalapeños. If you are a fan of spicy food you should bring your own spice or ask for extra jalapeños. The prices were very fair for the Madison area, and quality of the food. Ambiance was great, art was cool (they had a bunch of Greek gods replaced with animals; ie. baaaaatlus; and the picture is a sheep caricatured as atlas holding a boulder. The music was fantastic in my opinion, creates a fun atmosphere. Also there is a beautiful garden patio upstairs. Another thing I liked was the men's bathroom says "Gods" and the women's says "Goddesses"; goes with the theme perfectly. One thing I'm unsure about is after giving them a tip on the option menu after paying, they ring a bell and then all the staff yells "Opaaaaa!!!!". (A Greek word for a general exclamation). Not sure if any of them are Greek. (EDIT: I've learned the owner is Greek.) Idk if this could be analogous to a soul food joint with all white workers who say "lean with it; rock with it" after being tipped. But I could honestly care less about that lol. What I did care about was the fact that me and my friends showed up at a very dead time (around 3pm) and took our seats after ordering. Once our food was ready they only bothered to yell out our numbers when it was like 7 of them behind the small desk not doing much. Could have at least walked them to our table in my opinion (especially after we all tipped). What made up for that though was a couple in the booth next to us left without finishing all their food, and didn't even bother to throw it away; and obviously the workers aren't going to bother walking all the way over there. So I throw away their trash and saved the spare fries and extra gyro they didn't finish and shared it with my table. That really filled us up all the way and made it a 10/10 experience. read more

My husband recommended this restaurant for lunch. It looked a little divey on the outside but I was extremely pleased when we entered! The decor was very light and clean. And beautifully decorated!!
