This cafe is only a few mins from my home but I only recently discovered it. Located at the Marina…read moreat Bayview, you'd be forgiven for missing this cafe from the street as it sits on the waterfront side of the building. Entry is from the small car park to the left side of the building (not the main council car park located to the right). I visited on a cold and rainy day, possibly the worst time to take advantage of the location, and it was still lovely. Warmed by an outdoor heater, the seating is outdoor undercover. Orders are placed at the counter, but food is delivered to the table. Seating is comfortable but not luxurious. The staff were very friendly and highly attentive. The menu is all day breakfast or lunch, prices aren't cheap but based on quality of fare I would say they are reasonable. I ordered a full breakfast consisting of bacon, sausage, egg, mushrooms, toast and hash brown. The menu price was $20 which is at the upper end of what I'd expect to pay for a cafe breakfast. I asked for them to hold the hash brown as I didn't want it. What arrived was a mountain of good food. 3 full bacon rashers, 2 sunny side up eggs, 2 beef sausages, 3 slices of premium loaf toast, a halved grilled tomato and sauted mushroom. I have to assume they added extra bacon in lieu of the hash brown because there was no room left on the plate for anything else. It was delicious, pure and simple. Perhaps it was the cold weather, perhaps it was the cosy warmth of the heater, perhaps it was waiting until midday for breakfast. Even accounting for all those things, the food was delicious. The bacon was premium quality, the eggs were free range, the sausages were gourmet, everything was cooked perfectly. We asked for a coffee and that came in a big mug, ready to warm the hands, perfectly suited to the day. Maybe it was a one off to have such a good experience, and it helps when you're not expecting it, but I will be heading back here.

This 'boutique general store' oozes cool from the young baristas to the random collection of Moroccan and Turkish homewares. Cooler than this, Sea Poppy has bought us what we've been waiting for - a choice! No longer limited to the pricy kiosk at The Bower restaurant you can pick up a gourmet pie, freshly made sandwich or a cupcake for no more than $10. In Sea Poppy today I noticed they are going to start snorkel hire soon - what genius idea to bring to Fairy Bower so we can enjoy the marine park in all its glory.

The boys are friendly, the coffee is consistently good and you can sit on a boulder right next to the water and wonder how the other half live. Ready to go maple granola looks highly addictive... just keep an eye on the milk pour... because they'll drown it in dairy and kill the crunch if you're not careful. The savoury muffin lacks flavour, but like all muffin's should, has a good top crust. The macaroon is a moist must... crammed with coconutty goodness to the point that I virtually entirely devour my friend's and realise I should have bought my own. Now an essential coffee accompaniment and a brand new addiction. Stop in here mid coastal walk from Manly to Shelly Beach, or in my case, stagger in here on Sunday morning post Saturday night soiree and pray the caffeine does the trick. If it doesn't, walk three metres and plunge into ocean without any further ado.

The dining area can be opened up to the outside on nice days but still gets the sun when it's nippy. There's a gorgeous lounge room upstairs and a deck with seating. The "smoking room" harkens back to the day when this was a men's club so the historic photos and furnishings are fun to look at. There are at least three bars, not all open, and two enormous pool tables. We had a light lunch there consisting of avocado toast and house-made granola. The toast had generous slices of avocado, feta cheese, tomato slices and leaves that might have been basil. The granola was crunchy with strawberries and milk. Both of us enjoyed our choices.
