I'd heard of the student clinic at Endeavour College and figured that at $15 for an hour session, it was the perfect way for me to dip my toes into the world of acupuncture and see if it was actually for me, and more importantly, if I noticed any results. I've had two sessions so far, and while I'd definitely consider it a work in progress, I am noticing an overall improvement in not only the primary issue I sought the treatment for (severe lower back pain) but in my total energy levels, attitude and a lasting effect of balance. I'm even noticing I'm eating less. The students are fully supervised and their supervisor comes into the sessions regularly to check that all is going well. I'm yet to feel in any way uneasy about the students that have practiced on me. Don't stress. I'm getting to what you all want to know. The needles? Honestly? I don't feel them. Sure you *know* they're sticking a needle in you but do you feel any pain? I'm told it is different for everyone but, I personally, haven't felt anything more than a quick prick of the skin. Once they are all in it actually feels like a nice current is washing over you. A calmness if you will. The sessions can take a little longer as they are student practitioners and they begin each session with a short Q&A and sign-off from their supervisor. For $15 though, I can't complain and I would whole-heartedly recommend to anyone wanting to either save a few quid or test it out without dropping a wad of cash.

They will be charging hundreds, Naturopathy, aromatherapy, massage, acupuncture.... And way more that I didn't read, all as cheap as chips. Seriously, I can't talk it up more. The students that run clinic are professional and know their stuff, I'm currently in my third week for dietary analysis and the guy that is working with me is top notch, he explains things to me simply, and he doesn't let it get awkward even when he has to ask personal questions. The massages are not just the oily, waste of time massages that you get at a lot (A LOT!) of places in the city, they are actually about improving you physically, fixing pain or dealing with the neck problems from cramming at your desk all night. I love a bargain and I love my health, so this is my new happy place.

I could book online so they were already winning in my book. Then, I discover for December only they had 20% off all remedial massages. Two out of three checks in the "heck yes" box. After completing the standard new client paperwork, I was shown to the treatment room. The Ashgrove clinic isn't full of frills but that's not what you're hear for. This isn't a day spa experience where you're paying just as much for their on-call interior designer as you are the treatment. No, Sir. This is 100% about the treatment. My therapist conducted an initial assessment of how I was sitting, my neck and then we were underway. She focused on the key pain points but was also upfront and honest that in one 60min treatment we wouldn't get to address everything. Even so, I walked out of Boran 60 minutes later feeling far more relaxed and at ease than I had in weeks. Open only to private healthcare holders, this is where I would have my 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th... okay let's not get too carried away, you get my point. What I love about having a baby here at this hospital, is that it's small, you can always get a car park, and everyone is really friendly. They actually remember your name and treat you not like a number but someone who is you. They were caring, I had the same midwife with me most days I was there after giving birth. They gave me a wheelchair when I was walking into the hospital straight away with contractions. They gave me gas, epidural, drugs in general... they got my baby out without too much stress. I absolutely loved the care I had in this hospital and the food was pretty damn good too (I ticked all the boxes on the order food forms and got so much food stacked on my tray). They were so good to me here, I sent them all really expensive chocolate brownies after I got home. And I never do that.

Thankfully, Ondol's style is a happy medium that combines gentle massage movements with more deep reaching muscular techniques that have me walking out like I'm walking on air as a new woman. With regular treatments, Sue has taken my lower-back pain and general muscular issues from a 10 on the pain meter to a dulcet 3 or 4. Also, I quite admire their focus on it being an ongoing process to health rather than a one-time fix-it-all treatment.

I have never really believed in acupuncture, but my visits to Ondol have changed all that. My first point of contact was the receptionist, Helen, who was incredibly lovely when I queried if it was alright to bring a mobile 9 month-old to the sessions. Without hesitation she said, 'bring her in, we all LOVE babies'. When I arrived for my first appointment, Helen was not there, but two of the principal practitioners both took my daughter and looked after her, while I had my acupuncture session. When I said to them after the session, 'I hope she did not stop you from doing your work', they responded with big smiles and said 'it's all part of the service'. My daughter and I have always felt so incredibly welcome there. The atmosphere is one of family and one of everyone banding together, using their collective knowledge to assist you in getting better. Following each fertility treatment I felt incredibly relaxed. It was as if I had just had the most wonderful massage. After weekly fertility treatments including acupuncture, Chinese herbs and moxibustion, for just over three months, I fell pregnant. During my fertility treatment on one occasion I arrived and had crippling back pain. Two of the practitioners worked on me at the same time and I walked out 80% better than when I had crawled in. I was so surprised as physiotherapy had had little effect. After another visit where I had shooting pain through my leg and neck when accelerating the car or turning my head, I walked out able to both accelerate the car and turn my head with full mobility. The range of ailments that acupuncture can assist with is amazing and even a couple of well-placed needles resulted in me breathing freely during a persistent cold. I am absolutely converted and am so fortunate to have found such a wonderful practitioner in Dr Hae-Uk and her staff and colleagues. I would recommend this clinic to everyone.

The staff are all friendly, and you can even request a certain level of chattiness. This place is tucked away upstairs from The Stores, and I believe there's a lift if you're not in any shape to make it up a set of stairs. I would recommend parking out the back rather than the front car park, as that's only 15 minutes. I came away quite sore, which lasted a couple days, but I was able to move, and a lot of the knots were gone, so it was probably worth it. I think i'll be heading back here next time I need a massage.
