Even as we walked away from the central area of Santiago, there were plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops to behold. I detected the smell of fresh bread wafting down the street and decided it would be a good idea to investigate. This journey took me to Ebano, a bakery that specializes in many traditional Galician baked goods - and not just tarta Santiago! There were empanadas and empanadillas with every filling imaginable, loaves of fluffy, crusty bread, traditional square layer cakes (also with every filling imaginable), and small pastries. Two very pleasant women were working behind the counter that day. I asked for one loaf of "rosca gallega" bread (the bread comes in many shapes and I thought a ring shape would be a nice departure from a normal loaf). Sure, the bread would go well with the soup we would be eating later in the day...but what about something sweet? Because I am devoid of willpower, I also asked for a slice of plain cake (although raspberry did sound enticing). The woman wrapped my baked goods, which were very reasonably priced, and it was time to go back home to enjoy them. The bread was absolutely perfect, especially after re-heating it. Airy without being too porous, flaky without creating a mess of crumbs. The cake was also delicious - extremely fresh and moist, without being overly sweet. It went well with my café solo and was the perfect way to conclude a carb-laden lunch.

The economy here without the pilgrims would crash! The Camino spirit is about loving people.....all people....this bitch....omg....after the Camino I'm actually using the word "bitch,!" And it's because of this bakery.....
