I know the Patriot League mainly for two reasons: (1) men's college basketball and (2) college football. This league is very much regional, rooted in the American Northeast since 1986. Its 10 full members come from DC, Maryland (2) Massachusetts (2), New York (2), and Pennsylvania (3) with associate members from the same places plus Virginia (Richmond). The league is headquartered in the Lehigh Valley, PA. In the 2012 NCAA men's basketball tournament, Lehigh upset the South Region 2-seed, Duke, 75-70, in the Blue Devils' home state of North Carolina. NBA fans might recognize a name from that 2012 Mountain Hawks team: CJ McCollum. He led Lehigh with 30 points in what has become a historic game for the Patriot League. McCollum was the Patriot League Player of the Year that year (2012) and in 2010. Bucknell University has made eight NCAA tournament appearances, six of which occurred this century. Their biggest win came in 2005 when the 14th-seeded Bison upset the No. 3 seed Kansas Jayhawks by one point, 64-63: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woYjcnqIxSk. The following year, Bucknell advanced to the Round of 32 again. That year, it was a more even matchup as Bucknell was placed in the 8/9 game against Arkansas. The Bison, seeded 9th, "upset" the Razorbacks, 59-55. Again, NBA fans might recognize this name from Bucknell: Mike Muscala. Like fellow pro McCollum, Muscala was a two-time Patriot League Player of the Year (2011, 2013). He played all four years at Bucknell before becoming the only player in school history to play in the NBA. I'm familiar with Muscala from his time with the Atlanta Hawks (2013-2018). In football, the Patriot League presently consists of only seven teams, two of which are associate members: Fordham and Georgetown. Fordham was a full member of the league for a short time (1990-1995) and has since been a member of the bigger Atlantic 10 Conference. One of the Fordham Rams football team's most famous alumni is Kevin Strahle, better known on YouTube as the LA Beast. I'm a big fan and one of his current 2.65 million subscribers. Strahle regularly wears his old Rams jerseys in his videos and live streams. Those jerseys sport big Patriot League logo patches on the upper-left chest. It's good exposure for the league. Strahle plays center on the O-line, snaps the football, and helps protect the run/pass. Trivia: In the early seasons of The Sopranos, Tony Soprano mentions Bucknell during his daughter's, Meadow's, college search. Carmela Soprano, Tony's wife and Meadow's mother, wants her daughter to stay close to home and go to Georgetown. True to New Jersey. Strahle is also from the Garden State.
