That should tell you something about the experience I have there. The selection has yet to let me down. The prices are good. The deli is great! But the true value of this place is in the staff... They are AMAZING! I could share any number of stories but Ive settled on this one for today.... I was sitting in my car about 30 minutes before they opened. The workers and what looked like delivery people were moving about their business in and out the doors. The Owner, Dennis, came over and invited me in. He knew that I was most likely there for deli items and volunteered that there was someone back there who would open up for me. I go back there and sure enough there was someone back there.... But he was performing a full pre-start break down and cleaning of the deli! I was about to swerve and busy myself with other stuff but he was right on it! asked me what I needed and got me situated with a smile and a genuineness that you can't fake. As I made my way to the checkout, I see Dennis waiting there to ring me out personally. As I'm walking out of the store, he runs out and stops me to introduce himself properly. As a small business owner, that level of service and willingness to stop everything for one customer means something.

Best kept secret in Brookfield. I have been patronizing here for 15 years. Staff is helpful…read more Because I get the same thing in the deli for my elderly father every weekend, staff has memorized my order and will prepare it before I even mention what I need. Store is not huge so instead of walking around for 20 minutes, I can get what I need and get out in a minimal amount of time.

I've been to a number of Farmers Markets throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. From the…read moremarket in Daley Center to markets on the near west side, Lombard, Brookfield, Skokie, and now Riverside. While parking can be questionable at some locations the regular and handicap parking here seems plentiful within the the square and the entire area has both a true small town feel and also a big local park feel with trees and flowers. For an afternoon Farmers Market there was a full supply of vendors during each of my visits. Many have mentioned the knife sharpening and after I had a pair of scissors sharpened I'm also a believer. With many vendors offering multiple types of veggies and plants there is a lot to look at. While I didn't buy raw honey (not super processed or pasteurized so most people say it has better health benefits and and fuller flavor) here at Riverside yet, I expect to need some at the start of the next season. There are multiple Amish vendors and I was lucky to spend a while talking to one of the Amish families about their farm and some of their core values. I've worked directly with a few different Amish families in Illinois and Indiana and have found each to be an unique experience. If you have time to talk to some of them or buy your veggies or baked goods from them you'll love the experience. Some people I've spoken to treat a Farmers Market like a bartering flea market but I find the quality to be high and prices reasonable and don't think that it's appropriate to ask a farmer or baker to lower their price when they have put some high labor in to their products. Hard work should be rewarded.

This is my third year being a CSA member. Not only is the taste of the vegetables amazing, but…read morerecently it's been significantly cheaper than shopping organic at the big box stores. I go to the farm for pickup every week, and I love the variety, that I can pick and choose between over a dozen different herbs and veggies, the extras they often have, the UPick tomatoes and beans and etc. It's also such a relief to know where my food is coming from, that there are no chemical fertilizers or pesticides in it, that it's not downwind a feedlot so no chances of salmonella outbreaks in their leafy greens, that it hasn't been sprayed to ripen -- the peace of mind itself is invaluable. They have three seasons (spring, summer, and fall) that you can sign up for (that often sell out early, especially the summer season), as well as Thursday farmstands in the afternoon. Also, at the beginning of May they sell seedlings, with prices cheaper than The Growing Place, and most of the plants I buy from there thrive in my garden with no additions required (I put compost in the hole and around the base when I first plant them, mulch around the seedlings, and that's pretty much it, by mid-July I'm getting more tomatoes and basil and etc than I know what to do with).
