We were running late for the meeting, but it was a pretty lax event and there were others caught in traffic, so we took this as an opportunity to make a sneaky snail run to Pattisons Boulangerie. (I know what you're thinking, snail run? That's an oxymoron. What? You weren't thinking that? Oh, okay. My apologies.) My friend and I surveyed the cakes and macaroons, the tarts, the pastries. The bread was there too but we weren't interested in the dough, only in the sweet stuff this morning. He more than I, but I was there for moral support. He chose a snail, a classic in the pastry world, that sugary glazed french inspired treat. Good with coffee or on its own. I've had a fruit flan from here before as well, an amazing bakery sweet. Fresh fruit on a custard filled short bread base. While you're reading this, you're probably thinking, wow sounds great, what's the catch? Well as the name, Boulangerie, suggests, it's not cheap. It's a boutique bakery, catering to finer tastes. It's not your run of the mill bread shop, but rather something for a special occasion or when you're happy to forgo your house repayments for that week. You're probably thinking, 'it can't be that expensive, a house repayment is likely to be thousands of dollars', you're right, but it's more expensive than say a generic bakery, but much more tasty and elegant. (What's that? Oh, you weren't thinking that either? My apologies again.)

I have to keep a safe distance from Pattison's - the cakes are too good. But this weekend I had a good excuse, a family birthday and I was charged with bringing the cake. With no time to bake, Pattison's in the new(ish) Stockland Cammeray was my best bet - and while I'm there, oh why not stop and have a coffee? This has become one of my favourite from the Pattison's family. The decor is high spec and fun, and the light streaming in from the courtyard only adds to the delightful ambience. What a wonderful place to come and fetch a baguette, a fruit tart, or something a sight more rich: I opted for the Choc Brûlée cake - oh so rich but oh so good! My skim cap had way too much chocolate on it (I know, I know, but you really can over chocolate a cappuccino!), and the milk was a bit thin, but the taste was good. I'd probably opt to 'caffeinate' at Simmone Longue across the way, but Pattison's is quite the delectable one stop shop.

Nice looking baked goods with a tight seating area. Too bad the taste of the food did not match the appearance. The chocolate croissant had about a snack size candy bar's worth of chocolate in it. The beef filling inside the meat pie had dried up a bit and was quite salty. I've had much better meat pies from frozen food sections at way less than half the price.

Haven't been back to either of the aforementioned shops since then. I always seem to get a combination of some of my favorite items: red bean buns-not to be confused with their red bean "paste" buns, which are thicker and sweeter-, custard buns, egg tarts, plain polo buns, and taro polo buns. There's all range in price $1.00 ~ $2.00, and I definitely prefer their versions to the ones found in other shops as these ones are less sweet and more generous with filing. Also, please be on the lookout for their pre-close specials, where they bag a few assorted items for a hugely discounted price in late afternoon around 5-6pm!

"World-shaking."…read more Not normally how I'd describe anything, let alone a patisserie, but - mon dieu! - what slice of provincial France exists here in outyling suburbia. They serve coffee in bowls. Bowls! Where are we, Biarritz? There's always a queue, a necessary evil I'm afraid but then, with the sheer Gallic quality of, oh, let's see, *absolutely everything* they produce (in the bakery you can see with your own two eyes (three if you're Tasmanian) out the back of the shop, no less), I'd be worried if there weren't a queue. And really, they could charge what they want, these taste magicians. Their artisan skillz endow them with a virtual license to print money. But do they? They do not! A regular latte is a mere $2.80. Say whaaat?! If you don't get in afore 8am you won't even see a Country Loaf let alone snag one. You'll be left with perfect baguettes, homemade jams, petit fours, and the best almond croissants I've ever tasted (and I once adjudicated at the Best Almond Croissants Awards).

Arrive anytime after 10 in the morning and you'll find a seriously depleted selection of breads (their country loaves are a personal fave), but the range of sweets is grazed on throughout the day as guests stop for morning and afternoon tea. Considering the perfection of their pastries and intricacy of each creation, the prices are more than reasonable - just $1.60 for their mini items like raspberry tartlets and coffee éclairs, or $4.50 for a larger items, like the individual roasted, caramelised macadamia cake covered in dark chocolate ganache and flecked with edible gold. The seats are scarce with only some four tables on hand inside, but try to grab one if you can to get the full Gallic experience: the woman regularly manning the till speaks with a bona fide accent, the coffee served as bowls of café au lait rather than paper takeaways, the chairs familiar black-and-white Parisienne wicker creations.
