The Casio watches caught my eye; they all look in great condition and are not as pricey as I had imagined. As for the jewellery, well there is all sorts really. I spotted a lot of cameo brooches, earrings and pendants which are quite fashionable these days across all generations. The rings and earrings generally were very beautiful. They also have wedding rings, charms, christening spoons and cheap costume jewellery. This place really reminds me of one of the copious amounts of second hand jewellery shops you find down the Lanes in Brighton.

Highly Strung specialise (as you might have guessed by the name!) in beaded jewellery - and the style of their work is less granny-pearls, and more assymetrical contemporary pearls and beads. I walk past this shop every day, and when they're open the ladies inside smile and wave out. I\ve been ogling a particular assymetrical pearl necklace with a large floral diamante piece on one side.. but alas I can't justify such frivolous purchases at the moment. One of about a dozen used and new purveyors of fashioned metal, Robert's stands out from the crowd for its mostley collection of used jewelry. Going to Robert's is like going to an auction: some of the stuff is worthless Argos jewellry, and some of it is a genuine antique find. My (now) husband and I went to Robert's when searching for my engagement ring. I'd had a "holding ring" for awhile, until we could find something we realy liked. All we had as criteria were the following: -not a rock -- I'm too clumsy, and would end up putting my eye out with a big gem -something with a patina, WWII or older was our goal So with that in mind, we hit every jewellry store in Tamworth and Lichfield, then headed into Brum. We found some absolutely amazing rings, but none of them quite fit the bill. We'd had a mosey around Robert's in the past, just to laugh at some of the more interesting pieces, but headed in there as we knew they had some genuine antiques. And lo and behold, we found the ring: in 1947, some fine English jeweller decided to surround an ovular sapphire with eight teardrop diamonds, and worked gold "drops" in between. It whispered "classy" and dripped "antique". One of my favourite bits about it is, when viewed from the side, it shows tiny gold curlicues. Heaven. It was too large for my finger, so Robert's agreed to have it fitted for me. We'd come in on a Saturday, and it was ready to pick up on a Monday. The sales ladies at Robert's are a bit salesy. They like showing jewellry, but love to "help you find a bargain", so be prepared to haggle a bit. The head jeweller there has studied his craft, and worked in the business for over 20 years, and knows what he's talking about. If he knows you're there to buy a piece that lasts for posterity, and you've taken a liking to a more common piece, he'll guide you to a piece with more patina and a similar price tag. Worth it's weight in baubles, that kind of advice.

Now, as you'd have probably gathered, such establishments are as common as muck (or gold and silver) in the area, but Paul Green stands out, partly due to its attractive facade, which manages to be bright and eye catching without crossing that most dreaded of lines into gaudiness, which would be a real kiss of death in such a competitive area. There seem to be two main types of jewellers in the Jewellery Quarter - ones that go for the minimalist style with the emphasis on luxury, and those that go for a slightly less glitzy route, looking to come across as independently run and homely, and it's the latter category which Paul Green definitely falls into. The shop is small, but manages to feel intimate rather than claustrophobic, thanks in no small part to the friendly, welcoming staff. As for prices, Paul Green is most certainly competitive, although as you're probably going there with a very specific idea about what it is you're looking for, the most helpful thing I can do is tell you to shop around. As a bonus, Paul Green is virtually the only jeweller in the area open on Sundays, so if you happen to be passing through and need a jeweller there and then, don't despair at the number of closed shops.

Cheshire Jewellers go the extra mile by offering a polite customer service, free packaging, fourteen day return, valuation and shipping within five to ten working days. It's clear from the way the staff talk about the items and care for them that they have an extensive history as a jewellers. I have bought many pieces from here, normally for my girlfriends' significant birthdays. The chap who runs the shop doesn't rush you and is more than happy to take piece after piece after piece back to original piece (I'm an indecisive shopper) out of the cabinets. He has plenty of knowledge about the designer and takes the time to wrap everything perfectly including any relevant literature. If you are looking for something a little bit unusual, totally unique and stunning in the jewellery stakes I'd start here.
