I was walking in Kingston and saw this really cute cafe it reminded me of Paris. We walked in and you could just smell the fresh baguettes. We were so excited everything looked so nice. All the pastries were lined up and they even had ready made sandwiches that looked delicious. We ordered tea and two food items because we were starving. I was really looking forward to having a light lunch at Paul with my husband as I have always loved the food and drink selection from Paul. On first impression as very disappointed with the cleanliness and hygiene of the place. Opening the door the handle was very sticky. Being disabled I had my wheelchair. The space was very tight and no offer of assistance to find a table, there were a couple of customers but the staff decided to huddle for a conversation while I struggled to stand and order. There was limited choice of food compared to other locations. The tables were also sticky and not wiped down. I asked to use the toilet to wash my hands and the soap dispenser did not work which seems to be ongoing as someone has written a note to the staff on the hand dryer, the floor was soaked. The customer seating area and floors were disgusting. Not one table was cleaned or wiped down while we were there over 40 minutes. I enjoyed the mocha but my husband choose not to eat and just have a coffee. The croque Monsieur was dry and we not up to the usual quality or standard. I will not be coming back to this Paul again. The standards and quality have dropped, I hope it is not the same for other Paul locations. read more

Paul coffee shop and patisserie is a welcome addition to Kingston, which seems to have fallen victim to the rise of the supergroup chain of coffee bars, and has not managed to retain that many smaller, better quality coffee establishments. Although Paul is part of a chain, the food, pastries (done with a French twist) and coffee tastes fresher and less mass produced than its rivals. I popped in here to try one of their macaroons, which was winking at me suggestively in the shop window. These are the multi coloured confectionaries which have a soft biscuity shell and a creamy filling that practically melt as they hit your lips. The one that I tried was very good; not quite a sublime as the macaroons in Harrods (ohh, get me!), but tasty nonetheless. I also ordered a skinny vanilla latte which came without the vanilla. When I pointed out this to the staff, they made me a new one, which I thought was very nice, albeit a bit wasteful, because the old untouched latte got chucked. It was a very well made coffee, so I might just add this place to my list of local coffee establishments that are worth a trip. read more

Enticing aromas assail your senses as soon as you approach this French patisserie. The window displays are pretty tantalising too. My recommendations for a true taste of 'la belle France' are the 'macarons' (delicieux!) light almond and egg-white based individual cakes which come in several alluring flavours, including pistachio and chocolate. The mini ones are only available in multi-pack boxes (sadly!) which should probably be avoided if you are on your own but would make a welcome gift. The larger individual 'macarons' really ought to be saved for a treat as they are definitely on the naughty side and assuredly nice... My other special French fancy, here, is of the savoury variety and would be a brilliant party-piece. Known as a 'Pain Surprise' - the surprise is that it's a hollowed-out pain de campagne (country bread) filled with mini emmental, ham or salmon sandwiches. Looks impressive and tastes great. A cute little high street French patisserie, filled with freshly made sandwiches, speciality breads and beautiful cakes. I was particularly tempted by the large macaroons, yum! It did take a long time to heat up my sandwich though, around ten minutes, so it's possibly better to opt for the eating in option. It's not cheap either, but nice for a payday treat. read more

Had a nice macaroon and chai latte here! I think it's probably going to save you from the other less attractive places around to eat from. There is, however, a costa and a pret nearby. They're good too. Especially the Pret. The macaroon I had was very nice but a bit different from the only other macaroon I ever had before which was better. I'm going to sound ridiculous but I was a chai latte virgin before today. Haha It was alright. Overall, I'd say its a good place. BUT, it's a bit warm in there and there were little flies flying around the food. I only noticed this when my sister came by and decided she also wanted something. Paul serves perhaps the best sandwich and best pastry I have ever eaten. The Pavot Poulet Sandwich is amazing as are the Strawberry Torts. The chocolate torts are pretty good as well. Actually, everything I ever had there was pretty good. The line does get pretty long sometimes around lunch hour, but its worth the wait. They do occasionally run out of their baked goods which is an ultimate tragedy. read more

I am French and I know the "Paul " bakery chain for seeing it all over the place in France as well as in England. I have no idea why people think it is so brilliant ....unless they aren't very fussed about what they eat that is. I haven't been to one in France in ages so won't comment on it but I can say that the "Paul" chain in London, whether it is in Kingston or Covent Garden (I've been to both) is way over-rated...and I know plenty of French people who share my opinion..apart from very few exceptions as always. I went 3 times in all. First time, I bought a "pain de campagne" from the Kingston branch. When I tried to cut it , it was like trying to cut a concrete block! And it didn't taste much better. Yeuk! I also bought a salmon salad which I could not finish. But worst of all were the quiches Lorraines. My Mom is from Lorraine and I can make a very good quiche so I know what I'm talking about. The ones I bought from Paul (in Kingston and Covent Garden) were awful. They didn't taste at all like quiches Lorraines! They tasted like porc pies! No wonder! They use puff pastry to bake them! Result: all the fat goes into the pastry and with the cheese etc it 's like eating pure fat . Some people might like but I can't stomach porc pies in the first place so I can't stomach Paul's take on the quiche lorraine either :o( My advice: If you want a real taste of a French bakery go to "MAISON BLANC". This Pattisserie is simply the best place to go for the most mouth watering cakes, pattisserie and bread .You can buy to take away or you can sit down and enjoy coffee, frapees and sandwiches or pastries.The staff are wonderfully kind and friendly.The quality of pattisserie is high, everything is beautifully laid out and priced so you do not have to ask.I really love this place, I always leave with a spring in my step. read more

I had the most horrific nightmares in Paul's cafe, the services is bad , I had to wait for 30 mins for my ordered and paid for food that never came and it happened twice for the periods of 2 weeks. Although they apologies on the both occasions but it was not good enough because i had a fine for overstaying at the nearby car park. Some of the staff were simply lost at what they were doing. One of them told my husband and myself that she had already given us our order only to find out that she had served our food to somebody else. Lessons, lessons, wont go again. read more
