Fat Hippo Newcastle - GF American Burger with Fries

Fat Hippo Newcastle seems to be one of the few restaurants in the city actually open past 9 pm,…read moreafter being turned away from half a dozen restaurants nearby that either had closed early or closed due to their timetabled opening hours, I decided to visit Fat Hippo. It is located just off Grey Street, head down the steps into the main restaurant area. I was looking for this place on my Apple Maps and did have some difficulty as the sign from outside isn't too noticeable. The staff seemed friendly and explained how most of the menu could be adapted to be gluten-free - I ended up going for the American Burger, on the menu this was described as "Double patty, American cheese, pickles, ketchup + American mustard. Includes a FREE SIDE of your choice!" I would have liked to see a wider variety of burgers on the menu, perhaps with some different and more exciting sauces - only the more premium burgers seemed to come with the Fat Hippo sauce or truffle mayo. With smashed burgers being in right now, I was surprised they didn't offer them on the menu here. My food was just OK, the fries were really skinny and a little too thin for my liking, but they were still seasoned well. My burger again was average, the meat was reasonably juicy for the type of patty used, the cheese was fine, the sauces were slightly cheap and it felt like it was overloaded around the edges, and not enough in the middle. The gluten-free bun wasn't too bad - certainly not the worst I've had but also not the best either. 3* - The food was average, if you're looking for a bite later into the evening in Newcastle, this is one of the few options, so for that it's good, I would be unlikely to return if other places were open nearby though but it's nice to have a reliable choice in the city if all else fails.

A solid burger option in Newcastle…read more Burgers are smashed and steamed Smashburger-style. There are lots of options (including a chicken option) with various combinations of jalapenos, bacon, BBQ sauce and various toppings. We went with the west-coast style (ala In-n-Out, for Americans). It was good, but definitely needs to up its game with tomato slices and raw onion. The buns are also good - fluffy, dont fall apart, a hint of sweetness. One of the best burgers Ive had in Newcastle. Fries are thick-cut, but not wedges (Wendy's-style for all my Americans out there). Apparently they are fried or coated in beef drippings. Not sure I got that taste, but they were definitely good. Also tried the buffalo chicken wings, which although small, had a spot-on excellent buffalo flavor and were covered with bleu cheese and celery choppings (?). Cant complain there. Would definitely order again. Only a few beers on draft (we had Goose IPA), but plenty of options in bottles and cans. Also appear to have some nice homemade moonshine and other similar options. The ambiance is a little odd. The entrance is not super obvious and Meat:Stack is actually just food served out of a dark, loud-ish bar. I am not sure if this is the normal experience, because I think they also have a stall in the Grainer Market? Maybe they just serve their food in the bar when the market is closed at night. Anyway, the bar is a bit of kitchy Americana, but the staff is nice. Definitely go Sunday-Thursday and get the £12 meal deal that includes any burger, a side of fries and a side of buffalo wings.

Since I passed the branch London many moons ago, I've been wanting to try the newest American…read moreburger chain to hit the UK. It wasn't until last night that I finally got a chance. However, all the hype did not live up to expectations at all. To be fair, I don't eat burgers but the fellow meat - eaters I was dining with said the cheese burger wasn't great. Looks-wise, the burger meat was grey. I'm no expert but isn't there something wrong with the meat if it's grey? Anyway, I got the veggie sandwich which is literally a sad sesame bun filled with lifeless vegetable. It was edible but not worth almost £4. The "hand-cut" fries are not so. But with the skins on, they were the best part of the food offered. They were salty enough to make a good compliment for a milkshake (hey don't judge me! When in an American joint, do as the Americans right?). I choose strawberry but there's also flavours like peanut butter and cookie's and cream. I have to say, the milkshake was a little on the watery side but had ok flavour. The best part: strawberry pieces! Although these did not fit through the straw....Five Guys obviously need to get some bubble tea straws! Not a place I'd go back unless to take people who REALLY want to see why Five Guys is apparently the UK's favourite fast - food joint.

This is a nice, shiny new Five Guys. But it is so goddamn busy! Whenever I went to the Metrocentre…read morelast week, the queue was going all the way through the restaurant and by the time we had managed to nab a table and get our hands on the prized burgers and fries, the left hand soda machine was missing a lot of flavours. This time I decided to go for a Fanta with fruit punch and it was like a little taste of Hawaii! It was very similar to the raspberry flavour but a little more subtle. The burgers and fries were equally as solid too. Just like the Fort Kinnaird Five Guys, the staff were on their toes trying to keep up with all the orders that were flooding the kitchen every second. The toilets are at the back and were a bit messy when I visited. You go down this corridor until you reach a set of 4 doors. All of which are unisex cubicles with built in sinks. You don't have any space in the toilets because if you move you will set off the flusher, the tap or the hand dryer, all of which are closely compacted together. While it doesn't run as smoothly as other Five Guys restaurants I've been to, it is still pretty good and the food was well worth waiting for. (We had to come back after 4 hours! That's how crazy the MC was on Bank Holiday Monday!) We also struggled to get a space in the car park and we really pissed off someone who was going for the space that we were reversing into hehe!
