We have been customers of Paw Commons Encinitas for about 3 years ever since our black lab was a little puppy and we enrolled him in puppy training classes . I love Paw Commons because they offer so many services in one spot and I don't have to take him to a lot of different places. They offer grooming, daycare (half and full day), overnight boarding, and dog training (group classes, private sessions at Paw Commons, or home sessions). Training: We enrolled our dog when he was a few months old in the group puppy classes. It was a small group with only 1 other dog. The trainer, Christie, was so knowledgeable, personable, and amazing with dogs. We learned how to be dog trainers ourselves! We did the second puppy class (I think it's called puppy class 102) where we were able to talk about specific behaviors we want fixed like pulling when our dog walks on his leash, jumping up on people or the counter, etc. Overnight Boarding: Our dog loves to play with other dogs so we let him play during the day and sleep in the standard room (least expensive option). It is large enough for our 70 lb. lab with his big dog bed too. They can provide food or you can bring your own. They let us bring his own dog bowl, toys, and are very accommodating. You can ever buy a bull stick or peanut butter Kong for your pup to enjoy during their stay. Through my research, Paw Commons provided the most playtime at the best price. Grooming: Our dog does not get haircuts but their basic bath is affordable and he stays clean and smells good for several weeks. We love picking him up from boarding all clean! Daycare: Since our dog loves to play with other dogs, Paw Commons is perfect for him. Their facility is all indoors, which I like because we can send our dog when it's raining. They have an area for small dogs and another area for big dogs. If you send your dog to daycare, ask about their punch card. You can buy 5 or 10 days of daycare at a discounted price. Occasionally I'll pick up my girlfriend's dog for her, and from what I can tell, he adores the staff. It's also very clear that the staff enjoy their jobs and equally adore the dogs, and most of them appear to be very knowledgeable. The manager there, Taylor, is always very polite and has given some great recommendations on food/treats. He's almost always exhausted when I get him, so I know he's getting a good work out. Play area also looks to be very well kept, so never really worry about little man getting sick with anything. read more

My wife and I have been using this facility for the last couple months and unfortunately we found out that they used are dog in a staff training exercise that we did not OK ,let alone I pay 150 a night for them to do this and have not refunded me or even try to make it right , plus my dog would come home with bit marks all over him witch I ask serval time if he is playing ruff pleases take him away , but that's not what bother me , it was them using my dog for there training exercise , not ok and my wife works for a a very gd veterinarian in the area , will not recommend this place to anyone plus my dog was always soaked in pee when we got him read more

This place is the best. I had to go out of town with all of my family to settle my dad's estate in Hawaii. Because of the location, I was unable to bring my baby/our dog. She has really bad separation anxiety as she was taken to the pound two times in her young life. we were so stressed about leaving her somewhere or someone watching her that we almost canceled the whole trip. I had no idea what to do and then I was recommended to Paw Commons from my coworker. From the very first interaction with Taylor, I felt a sense of relief. She understood my anxiety. She understood my concern. She really made me feel comfortable with the whole experience. every morning we would wake up and peek in on our dog who is having the best day with her new friends playing in the play area. I could see the staff members petting her and giving her attention and love. I called them at one point because I'm a helicopter mom. And they were so understanding. My dog had the best time there. Worst doggie daycare I have ever been to!! I took my dog here for the first time yesterday and I had hopeful thoughts that this could be a fun daycare for my dog. Boy was I wrong! I dropped her off and about an hour later went onto their webcam on their website. Not one employee ever went into the play area and interacted with the dogs. This was my dogs first experience in a new place and she was scared. She sat in the corner the entire 4 hours she was there. I felt so bad for all the dogs that were in the play area. They seemed bored, lethargic and were dying for human interaction. The worst part about this experience, was when I picked my dog up I had to wait 20 minutes in the lobby. Not one staff person was there to greet me or help me. I had to knock on the door and call their phone 3 times before someone finally came out. The employee was frazzled and unorganized. All I wanted at that point was to grab my dog and get the heck out of there!! Please think twice before taking your dog to this day care. This was our first and last time we take our pup here. We decided to give it a try due to the stellar reviews we had received from some friends. My partner and I went on our anniversary trip, so we boarded our pup for 5 nights. To sum it up, our vacation was spent worrying over our pup and her safety. For the first two days, the cameras were down. Not only were we promised a report card and never received it, but we bought the platinum package (6 hours of play), and I only say my pup once. Keep in mind that I was checking every hour to make sure she was good. On top of that, when we picked her up, we were being charged $150 more than was quoted initially, and they tried to gaslight me into thinking that it was due to the added daily insurance fee ($3/day x 5 = $15) and the added kong ($5). Thankfully, they honoured the initial quote after some pushback, but overall, this experience left a lot to be desired. Our poor pup is so timid and sad right now, it leaves me wondering what's going on behind the scenes. Definitely wouldn't recommend coming here if you care about your pets like family. read more

Every Wednesday for the past 4 weeks we've taken our, previously "irrationally exuberant", 18 month old Golden Doodle to Paw Commons in Encinitas for 1 on 1 training. Sarah and Rod gave us all of the tools and the rest was left to us. With a good amount of practice, positive reinforcement and some tough love we now have a calm and obedient member of our family. With Sarah and Rod's guidance our pooch will, with our commands, go to her place, wait, wait while we enter a room first, lie down and leave a treat alone that is in front of her (until we tell her to get it), walk very calmly on her leash, lie down, settle and chill when we're at an outdoor cafe, and is far more calm and social when around other people. We still have a number of things to work on but are beyond confident that we'll have the similar success. To say that we're thrilled with our pup's transformation would be an understatement. It goes without saying that we can't recommend Sarah and Rod highly enough. It's unfortunate that the Yelp rating doesn't allow for more than 5 stars. read more

I brought my pomeranian in with me to inquire about grooming. It was quiet and calm inside and he and I felt very comfortable. Darlene came out to talk to us and told us how important it was that his first experience be very positive so suggested we start with a bath and gave me tips in what to do at home to prepare him. I made the appointment and when we returned we were greeted again by Darlene and I happily turned him over knowing he was in great hands. He was there 3 hours. She took her time and when I picked him up I was pleasantly surprised that he did really well and she was even able to trim him. She came out to tell me how well he did. I used to take my pup Camp run a mutt often while I am at work, but due to work schedule changes I needed a daycare close to home. Paw Commons has always been on my radar and I am happy with my decision to bring my pup there. The front desk staff are always friendly. Pickup and drop off is efficient. The facilities do not have a pool nor a lot of outside exposure as the Camp Run in Kearny Mesa, but the interior play area was comforting to have since SD had been having rainy days lately. What impressed me with Paw Commons is how they help keep costs down for new clients. For example, my pup's first full day was only 10 USD. And when I bought a package, I got a new client discount that saved me a good amount of money. Also, if you check in via Yelp, there is a discount on their grooming services. Which place their grooming prices to be better than Dirty dogs. However, what differs with grooming here versus Dirty dogs is that if you have an appointment, you drop off your pup and the usual pick up time is about an hour later. Plan accordingly. I'm am really used to the 20 minute grooming session at Dirty dogs but I was happy that Paw Commons was accommodating and efficiently groomed my pup that day. Danielle is a highly professional, first rate trainer! I would absolutely recommend the 10 day stay in training. I'll begin with the facility. My first impression of the place was it was clean and well organized. You walk into a small storefront with a few treats and dog food. Looking around you also get a glimpse of the training room and free run facility. When we left paw commons we were able to pull up their internet cameras and take a look at what our pup was up to. Our pup, Toby was almost always running around with a few friendly dogs. In addition to the great facility the service was great. To give you an idea at some point during Toby's stay one camera has moved a little... so, being needy dog owners we asked for it to be adjusted. The staff immediately responded and put the room into view. During the training everything was prompt and on time. When we showed up at 6 for our consultation we started in the reserved training room right at 6. When we picked up at the end of training Toby was was clean, brushed and waiting with the associate at the front desk to greet us. When we had follow on lessons after the stay in training Danielle was always punctual. Going into the training Toby, my young terrier mix, knee a few commands such as sit, down, shake and stay but all were weak. After training all were much stronger and he was trained in wait, leave it, play dead and bow as well. Most importantly was the improvement in leash manners. Toby went from occasionally pulling on the leash and sniffing everything he was interested in to healing nearly all the time. After training when we observed Our pup still had a leash response to other dogs Danielle met my wife and I to watch us walk him around other dogs in our neighborhood. She then demonstrated to us all the tips we needed to eliminate that behavior. The behavior is improving and we are pleased. read more

Extremely disappointed with this business. Paid for five days of full 6-hour playtime for my Husky, but they could not explain how our dog was out in the yard for only 1 hour before and after eating her food. Along with the coat of urine our Husky came home with, she also had an eye infection which needed to be combatted with heavy steroids. On the security cameras, it seems as if the staff just stands around spraying dogs with water if they show any sort of emotion or energy. The facility is clean, the staff are always friendly and helpful, and I love that I can see my dog playing on the webcam and get him groomed if needed. We recently adopted a six year old yellow lab from Lab Rescue. She needed some training since she was a highly skilled counter surfer and would immediately pounce on any food that fell on the floor. With four small kids this was happening all the time. Paw Commons has a Lodge & Learn program, where your dog stays at Paw Commons for training for a week or two. We were already planning to lodge her for 3 days, so we just changed that to a 5 day lodge and learn. Our trainer was Danielle Severson, who did an amazing job with assessing our yellow lab and coming up with a training program. It was clear Danielle is a highly skilled trainer and cares a lot about the dogs she works with. After the five days there was a departure session where we went over the training and how to reinforce what our lab had learned. I was amazed to see our dog obediently following directions, not jumping on dropped food, and ignoring food on the counter. My first time to take my dog for grooming. SUPER DISAPPOINTED!!! Was told my dog would be done in two hours (NOT FOUR). I know this for a FACT because I had plans at 1PM and needed my dog to be ready by 12:30. Also was the time the Groomer said he would be done. Must have taken another dog before mine and got behind. SUPER NOT HAPPY with the way I was told "we always tell you about 4 hours"....sorry not in this case!! I knew what time I needed my dog and I knew what time the Groomer said. And that is the reason I am writing this up...POOR SERVICE, NOT COMING BACK. Made me pay $30 for bath and dog was still WET...should have comp'ed it and gave me another date to come back. We dropped our 2 year old boy off for a daycare stay - all seemed fine except that when he came home he had some severe diarrhea. Lasting over 48 hours - he required a vet visit. We are not sure if the employees fed him unauthorized treats, or anything besides the normal food he eats - but we were not too happy about it. I really enjoyed taking my dogs to paw commons for day care and being able to check up on them via the web cam. I am extremely frustrated with their 6 month bordatella requirement and the lack of communication when it expires. I have taken my dogs their for day care and been turned away because their 6 month bordatella expired. The expiration needs to be communicated pro actively to the client so they can make sure to keep it up to date. Multiple times this resulted in me being stuck with no other option and my dogs having to sit in my car while i was at work. I will no longer be relying on them as a day care provider. read more

We had a truly terrible experience with grooming here. We tried Paw Commons after relocating to the area and needing to find a new groomer for our mini golden doodle. We wanted her to get a haircut and specified the amount we wanted taken off. They did advise that she had some mats and may need to be shaved, but this has never been an issue with her past groomer so we asked that they try their best to brush them out. We got a call less than two hours later that she was ready, which was alarming considering her typical grooming appointments take 4-6 hours. We arrived and were truly shocked when our dog came out from the back. She had been shaved almost naked and was unrecognizable. She seemed scared. It was horrible. We were honestly speechless so just paid the bill and left. They had mentioned that they might have to shave her, but this was beyond my wildest imagination. She was shaved completely down to the skin. Compared to our previous grooming experiences this honestly just seemed lazy and careless. Her fur took months to grow back, and when we got home we also realized that they had cut her on the ear and that took weeks to heal as well. She was cold all the time (ended up having her wear a jacket) and seemed sad for weeks following the appointment. When it was finally time for her to be groomed again 6 months later after her fur had finally grown back, we took her back to her previous groomer 2 hours away since all of us were so upset from our experience at Paw Commons and didn't want to risk anything like that happening again. Our groomer told us that she seemed more nervous and sensitive during the appointment than she ever remembered her being in the past. Overall, I wouldn't recommend Paw Commons to anybody, but especially not if you have a doodle and want to maintain their coat. Given their carelessness with cutting her ear and shaving her almost naked to avoid spending more time, I again would absolutely not recommend Paw Commons and will never be back. read more

My dog, Kiwi, loves everybody at paw Commons and misses going when it's the weekend or when she just spends the day with my husband or myself. The facility and staff are great and have helped my husband and I in short term crunches or on those really hot days that our pup just needs to be running around with other dogs in some A/C. The groomer was inattentive to my request to keep my dog's tail and ears long. They didn't even get rid of the tears under her eyes. They changed her look entirely, blaming me for "matting" in her ears (minor, at the top), and they cut off all the length at the bottom of her ears. This "show quality" groomer transformed a former show champion into an unrecognizable dog. She is still cute and much loved, but this bad cut will take weeks or months to grow out. (The groomer did keep the tail longer than the body, but the layering is sub-par at best.) They warned me that they might need to avoid dematting her ears at the beginning because of "hematomas" ( a fancy word for bruises - which you wouldn't even be able to see under her fur) and I told them not to shave her ears even if they had to cut out the slight matting. They did not listen to this advice and it's clear from their response that they're trying to save their reputation by casting me as a bad dog owner. Quite the opposite! This dog has always been treated like a princess. The voice message system was also annoying and it took a really long time to reach the front desk even when I was calling them back to confirm she was ready for pickup. Reasonable pricing, and maybe an acceptable haircut for the less discriminating dog owner. Two stars is generous. read more

My fiance and I recently adopted a dog (Bailey) who is, to put it lightly, a handful. We were struggling trying to understand and adapt to having Bailey in our lives. She really is a sweet dog, and full of life, but seemed completely unaware of our attempts to train her, specifically in regards to leash walking. Finally, at our wit's end, we scheduled a training consultation with Christie at Pet Commons. It was an amazing experience and one that I would highly recommend to any dog owner. The level of knowledge and understanding that Christie brought to the table was astounding. She listened to us, gave us some pointers, helped us teach Bailey some simple commands, recommended some equipment, and had Bailey walking like a "good dog" within an hour and a half. Every dog wants to be good, and feel like they have a place in the pack. Christie helps bring this out and helps train dogs and their humans (lol). I had been dissatisfied with my previous dog groomer, so I decided to try Paw Commons on a recommendation from a neighbor. I must say that the entire experience was stellar all the way through. The person I spoke to on the phone was friendly, energetic, and thorough, as was the individual that helped me at the front desk. The groomer, Ryan, did a fantastic job on my dog. My dog is a bit nervous around new people but Ryan's calm demeanor surely helped a lot. I had shown him a photo to give him an idea of the length I was looking for, and he nailed it. I've boarded my dog here a few times and he always came out happy. The facility is also very clean, and I feel safe leaving him there. Last time I boarded him, they called me just to let me know they cleaned his ears free of charge (because they got gunky), which tells me that they check every dog for basic common problems to ensure they are taken care of while you are away. This is the only place I trust to care for my dog (and this is coming from an overprotective dog mom) and I will continue to board him here in the future. They are also very flexible and have everything your dog needs. I forgot my food and water bowls and they said it wasn't a problem because they have some for every guest. In addition, they told me they would even cook your chicken etc. for your dog if they need it. So it is very nice that they can accommodate dogs with various health and diet differences. We have used Paw Commons for more than a year and really like their level of care and training. The most recent experience showed their level of care. Our dog was there for training and the trainer, Haylee, thought he didn't look well. She contacted Sarah, the manager, who also agreed he had a problem. They took him to the Vet Emergency Group immediately for assessment. VEG diagnosed him with a life threatening problem and performed surgery. Their quick assessment saved out dog's life.
