We had to take our much loved Burmese cat Libby to the PDSA. She had broken her leg, and was in much pain. At 16 the thought of putting her through either an amputation or a very invasive operation just didn't seem right - she already had oestoporosis, and would probably have ended up with rheumatism too. So it was with a very, very heavy heart that we had her put to sleep. We were given so much support, lots of information and advice. They were completely non-judgemental and just wanted us to make an informed decision.
We're not on benefits, and the bill was hefty (£300+), but it was 4am in the morning, it included xrays, pain killers, the final injection and so much kindness and consideration I would happily have paid twice. But, I take Helen's point - it's a body blow to the finances when you're not expecting it, and it's a shame she had such a poor experience - it's stressful enough dealing with a poorly pet. Personally I think we had a better service at the PDSA than most "commercial" vets, (they even offered to put the kettle on for us) and in many ways I'm glad Libby went to sleep there, in my arms, purring, and totally at peace. I won't mention the vets name here, but he so impressed me that I have set up a Direct debit for a monthly donation to the PDSA in Libbys memory as a thank you read more
