Okay, I have never graded a restaurant on their cleanliness but here we go. Yes, we did eat here today and it was frightening honestly. We walked in and over to a booth... the table appeared clean but the seats had food left in them for ... well I'm not sure how long. Moved to another booth that the guy way "wiping down" with a wet dirty rag and no cleaner. Yes, I am aware that some restaurants soak towels for this purpose, but I promise this was not the case. He did not wipe down the seats, but the food on the seat was to my right and there really was no other option, since all the chairs at the tables had hand prints on the top of the chairs and black dirt on the legs of the chairs. I informed the waitress that she might want to remind her bus boy that he should wipe down the seats. She apologized and I hope she passed on the information. While sitting there, I became more uncomfortable. Food on the walls. Air vents were black, like the AC filter has never been changed. I observed people behind the counter on an "ice rink of grease" sliding all around. The floors in the restaurant haven't been cleaned in days. It was 10 am, no way could they look like that from just a few hours. The grill has not been cleaned in well, it's been a while.... See photos, the aluminum wall guard was swiped at. But the controls on the grill were just nasty Waitresses were eating and drinking behind the counter, in front of customers. I didn't get to the restrooms, but if they are anything like the rest of the restaurant..... Coffee was as far as I wanted to go here. But my mom wanted to eat. So we ordered a burger and a steak sandwich. 40.00 plus tip. Food was subpar. Does were cold. Burger was not great. Mom liked her steak sandwich. Would I recommend this place. Absolutely NOT. I love a good old fashion tradition chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and okra and great lemonade. The coffee has been the best for morning also. Another favorite is the waffle sandwich for breakfast . U can't go wrong with ordering the homestyle potatoes with any meal. We came here due to it being highly rated. Unfortunately it did not live up to expectations. We arrived and were greeted, seated, and had our orders taken. We then proceed to sit and sip our drinks for an hour. There was never an explanation as to the delay. The place was full of patrons and not a single plate of food was present. When we finally decided to pay for our drinks and leave there was no apology or explanation offered. It seemed like there might have been a large carry out order being made. But that is only a guess. We were entertained while sitting at the bar top by watching the 2 line cooks work the grills like an orchestra. Pancakes are amazing. If you find yourself in Stephenville on Sunday morning (or anytime) and in need of a sit-down meal, The Peacock (established 1973) will do, especially if you have a softspot for classic American roadside diners. It's open 24/7 and serves a typical diner breakfast at all hours. The nostalgia factor is high here, with all vintage hallmarks intact, from the retro signage to the vinyl booths to the motel-adjacent location. Food is meh, I can't lie, mostly straight from the Sysco truck as far as we could tell, but it's clear that folks from all walks of life love this spot. We saw several cute families in for brunch after church, cowboys in from work on the ranch, little league players fresh from a game, and Tarleton State college kids hanging out. People watching was the most entertaining thing about the place. We were starving when we arrived, having driven across town to eat at a different highly rated place that wound up being closed for vacation of the owners (wah!). My hangry was breaking through and every little mistep was extra annoying at this point, not good for Peacock's assessment to come. We had to wait a few minutes for a table to open up, then were seated at a booth in the back. We could watch the cooks behind the counter from our table and they were busy bees, fixing orders for a full restaurant as well as many call-in and walk-up take out orders. Our waitress (the only one on duty?) came over right away to take a drink order and drop off the menus. We made our selections quickly but it was a while before she returned to take our food orders. She left before I could taste my drink and discover it was the wrong beverage. She never made eye contact or returned to our table again until our food came out 45 minutes later - wah! I ordered huevos rancheros. When it was delivered, the top was covered with cold, pre-shredded cheese straight from the bag. Ya know, the kind with added starch to prevent the shreds from sticking? It seems they have no heat lamps over the waiting plates, so the food gets cold as it sits and any cheese toppings do not melt. I was too hungry to care at this point. Eggs weren't half-bad, even if served over charro beans instead of having refried on the side. The hashbrowns were clearly straight out of the freezer bag, barely crisped. Too bad! read more

FIRST and last visit ! Four of us went into this restaurant on Labor Day. They were super busy so I expected the food to come out hot with a high turnover. Rate. we had to wait about 12 minutes to get seated. It's a seat your own. We sat in the back corner and it was so loud in this place that the waitress couldn't hear half of our orders And when I placed my order for a hamburger and onion rings, I specifically asked that the onion rings come out hot and she was like WHAT? I said I want them to be hot and she said yeah they're fried. They'll come out hot. She was a bit snippy. We all ordered coffee. We waited a long time for breakfast and as I said, they were busy so not unexpected but because of the wait, I really expected my onion rings to be hot. We had to ask for coffee multiple times we also had to ask for cream for two in the party. When the food arrived, my burger was hot and good. My onion rings were barely and I mean barely lukewarm. it took a while to get the food so the idea of sending them back didn't sit well with me because they didn't get my order right in the first place. how do you cook up a fresh hamburger but the onion rings are barely cooked. This is a timing issue in the kitchen. It just shows a lack of coordination in the kitchen. at $16 for a simple hamburger and onion rings ..... for a meal I only ate 1/2 of. Everyone else had breakfast. The Bill and my hamburger for four people came to 74 bucks... imo that's outrageously expensive for 3 breakfast foods. So we paid 74.00 for breakfast food and a simple burger . We had to keep asking for coffee. The waitress basically dropped our food at the table and disappeared, so I thought I would take my onion rings home and refry them. I asked her for a to go box when she dropped off the check. She NEVER EVER brought the box to our table. so we left without the box paid the bill and personally I think this place is substandard and expensive with poor service. I got french toast with bacon & eggs. Pretty simple. The eggs were so bland. Pretty sure they just pour it from a carton, as they kind of taste like cardboard. The bacon was sooooo salty that I barely choked down one piece. I didn't really get to eat my french toast because even though they're a breakfast place, THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE REAL SYRUP!! I was given a little thing of Smuckers "Breakfast syrup" which is just High Fructose Corn Syrup & artificial flavors. She did not get the order correct when she took it it should have been two hamburger steak plates with the sides we received one it wasn't even correct we asked for no gravy on it and got gravy she put another order in after we were about to leave and then still charges $32 for the 1 hamburger steak plus a salad yeah but the salad should have been on the side I should have got the order right in the first place read more

Not that impressive. We came in on a Monday at 11:30 and all of the seats were full. That didn't seem like a big deal, so we waited for a few minutes, then grabbed a seat. The server was unfriendly, slow, and inattentive. We had to flag her down multiple times for refills and napkins while she just kept walking past our table in a bored daze. The guy bussing tables was cool though and refilled our glasses once and asked how we were. He deserved the tip, not the waitress. The prices were ok, but the worst thing was the wait. We ordered eggs and pancakes and a burger and fries at 11:35. We didn't get our food until 12:50. The waitress didn't seem to even care, comment on it, smile or look us in the eye. Terrible service. Our second night in town we were told about Fuzzy's taco shop being a good spot to eat. When we drove over there we saw the outdoor patio was packed and didn't feel like dealing with a crowd. So I yelped spots near there and Peacock's came up, with a few decent ratings that helped us choose quickly. We got inside and were greeted and had the choice of any table or booth, there were only a few other groups dining in so there was plenty of room. I like how you can see the kitchen and cooks right at the front too. I ordered the jalapeno burger, and was a little annoyed that it comes with no sides. You have to order french fries or something else for a few dollars extra. A burger should at LEAST come with fries, come on now! Boyfriend had the omelette with taco meat, his meal came with toast and a choice of hash browns or grits. Service was great, our food came out quick and I loved watching the main chef whip everything together. My burger was great in every way. The beef was almost crumbling it was so fresh and the veggies and jalapeno bun were delicious. This thing was huge, I cut it in half and my bf still had to finish almost on of those halves! Somehow we were lured into a piece of chocolate meringue pie. It was a chocolate pudding with a rich, almost dark chocolate taste. Then a regular flour crust at the bottom that was flaky and tasted homemade. We will be back here before we leave I'm sure, but can't give 5 stars because of the no side situation.
