My partner and I did a private lesson with Ridgeline Guiding, and having climbed with many guides…read moreover the years I can say that Patrick was hands down one of the best instructors I have had. I left the day with way more than I expected to learn, and his feedback was tailored and focused on helping each of us climb more efficiently and in the end safer. Even if I knew more experienced partners to climb with in Banff, I'd still enjoy starting the season off climbing with Patrick. His coaching on movement and technique have made it easier to climb steeper objectives with less pump. Thanks!! Because this matters too, the booking process, communication and overall experience with Ridgeline couldn't have been easier. They are super professional and organized without feeling corporate.

He immediately responded and openly discussed the potential of not being able to make it due to the delivery date of his son in that general timeframe (which ended up being on the exact day we climbed). He made alternate arrangements in the scenario that he couldn't take us, which worked out great! Throughout the weeks leading up to the climb he was communicative, organized, and reassured me that everything would work out. This was our first time multipitch climbing, so I wanted it to be great. The day of the climb ended up being a wash because of unforeseen rain, but Patrick contacted me in advance to move the trip so that we wouldn't be miserably climbing in the cold and rain. We really appreciated that because the actual climbing day ended up being one of the most beautiful days! Ben was the one who ended up taking us out on our trip and he was amazing! He made us feel at ease and was super down to earth. He taught us the ropes (literally) and explained everything in detail. Despite my panic attacks and uneasiness, Ben was patient and encouraging the entire time. We felt incredibly safe in his hands and would definitely go with him again. It was one of the most memorable days to date and I am SO glad that I contacted Patrick. He was accommodating, transparent, honest, and organized and it was worth every penny!

We were assigned 2 female guides for the trail hikes and 2 male guides for the glacial trekking portions of our trip. When using guides, my only requirement is that they keep us safe and help us along our routes that are unfamiliar. Our female guides were friendly and helpful. When they couldn't keep us together due to the varied skill levels of our group, they offered to split us up so that everyone could have an enjoyable and challenging time. One group went on a trail run while the other continued on a hike. The guides' knowledge of the area was great and were learned a lot. Our male guides, though we spent 3 days together, did not take the time to get to know us or understand our expectations. Though they were knowledgeable about the route and trained us well on using our equipment, we were discouraged to ask questions. There were many times during our hikes that I was hiking alone and was unsure of the trail, especially during difficult portions. Communication could have been better overall. Had a great time on our trip despite the latter portion and I'm sure this isn't indicative of all Yam's guides.

I emailed to ask why they didn't advertise the trip on their social media. I thought it would be prudent for them to post a spot was left in the course on their FB or insta to try to get enough people. They never did this and I booked with another guiding company. I would have thought this was a risk Yam was taking and actually makes it harder for their guides to make a living.

Hey, When I went to…read morethe Rec Centre in Canmore, I really enjoyed it. They have a gym, the Cascade Fitness Room in the Rec Centre, that doesn't seem very big, but is a deceivingly good gym. It's got a family atmosphere, so it's nice because there are families there and not people on 'roids'. When I went there, I'd often joke with the people that work there at the front desk, They have a good sense of humour and are friendly. One of the good things about the gym was that it was close to my place. Even when my car was 'dead', it wasn't a big deal 'cause I could walk there pretty easily. It didn't hurt either that the Starbucks was between my place and the gym. :) The gym has quite a few things actually. I use to go through some different excercises when I went. They have really nice free weights that don't hurt your hands, some good stationary bikes and treadmills, an elliptical machine and a stairclimber too. They also have a place for bench press excercises. On top of that, they have a 'squat rack', which is a place to do free weight squats, pull ups, chin ups and even T Bar rows. The back extension equipment is nice, and is designed in such a way that people can also use it to do dips if they want to. Then, they have a mutistation part of the gym, where multiple excercises are basically put into one machine to save space. When I first saw the multistation, I didn't think it was all that great...but you know what...I was wrong. That multistation is AWESOME. They have a leg extension part of the machine that is really nice. One of the features of it is that there are multiple 5 pound weights that you can use between the 15 pound increments. So basically, people can increase the weight by 5 pounds instead of 15 on all the excercises on that multistation machine, which is awesome. The machine also features a really nice standing leg curl section, a lat pull down section, and a low cable section for tricep extensions and other excercises. One of the parts of that multistation that I love is the shoulder press/bench press section. It's nice because you're not 'locked' into the machine if you're doing shoulder press or bench press excercises. The shoulder press is fantastic. The bench press is really nice because it compliments a free weight bench press in that you can probably add more weight to the machine and give your muscles 'a different look' so that there is not as much muscle memory to the same excercise. There are also some nice mats to just relax and stretch. One of the nice things about this gym is that it is usually not too busy, and most of the people there seem pretty laid back, which is really important in a gym. They have a great view of the moutains there, so it has a nice feeling to it. The membership rate is unbelievable for a gym that has so much. 5 stars all the way.

It's a flight of stairs from street level, but the view from the studio is simply breathtaking. Different types of yoga are taught, and teachers all have their expertise. Even though one can get used to the sight of the snow-capped Rockies after a few weeks in the region, nobody can really stay cold to the mountain panorama that can be seen through a ceiling-high window. Make sure to come to a class that starts before sunset so you can fully enjoy the view! The studio is small and cozy, which makes the practice much more calming, and the hardwood floor adds a homely touch to the whole studio. If you're more of an outdoors person, teachers often offer outdoors classes directly on the mountains, especially in the summer. As for any yoga studio, drop-in class fees are $18, and there is no student discount. There is a monthly trial package if you're new to the studio, but since you won't be disappointed, the best deal is obviously the yearly subscription. Mat rentals are cheap ($1).
