I was extremely disappointed with my recent order from Peanuts Restaurant. The breakfast potatoes were completely burnt. They were so overcooked that many pieces were blackened and tasted bitter. Looking at them, it's hard to understand how anyone in the kitchen could have thought they were acceptable to serve. It should have been obvious during cooking, plating, and even before they left the kitchen. We ordered multiple meals, and each container had the same burnt potatoes, which tells me there was no quality control. When customers pay for a meal, they expect fresh, properly cooked food. We do not something that looks and tastes like it should have been thrown away. I hope the restaurant takes more pride in the food they serve and pays closer attention before sending orders out. I used to come to this place when I was going to college. Definitely decorated differently inside than it was before. The service was friendly. I went in the morning and just picked up a sandwich to go. Took over 20 minutes for me to get the sandwich which is a pretty long time considering there wasn't anybody else waiting. Each one of the 3 onion cubes became a flavor-bomb after caramelizing off the oil and golden eggs. Also helping was that the grill here seemed to be well-cured. The marbilized cheese oozed out from between the eggs and greens, like lava out of the Kilauea volcano - more like mild American cheese and less like the smoked gouda from Safeway. The hash browns were creamy with butter blended into the moist mix; like the insides of a samosa. The toasty bread wedges would go well dipped into one of the specialized pancake syrups picked up beforehand from the downtown Grocery Outlet one block to the north. read more

Remodel and a facelift?!?! Not going to lie, I was concerned when I found out Peanuts was remodeling. The old dining room and decor scream nostalgia and bring back nothing but great memories of my college days. My concerns was laid to rest quickly! When I visited, I found myself recalling "where things used to be" and their old layout. No more random tables all over the place, it's an open dining area with bar stool seating, larger tables, and some booths against the wall. They still have large TVs and the jukebox...most importantly, they kept many of the old vintage fraternity signs on the walls! (I will miss the random Budweiser posters though lol) No more ordering direct from the cooks and having them scribble a ticket that one and only Myun can decipher! You order directly at the counter and can now pay with card. Menu is still largely the same. The old brown board is gone (they have actual menus now) and they added tons of new dishes. Breakfast served all day, sandwiches, burgers, and rice plates. Of course - beer as well! They no longer serve my old favorite though...the "beef teriyaki with rice & fries". During my gym days, that was my ultimate carb up meal! Prices have gone up too throughout the year but hey that's everywhere! It's still a very affordable place. Portions are large and you'll be hard pressed to find better value around campus! I literally made it through college because Peanuts kept me fed for pennies and dollars throughout the years. It's been a while since I visited and wow the renovation looks awesome!!! Don't sleep on their breakfast!! Honestly it's my favorite thing here but their other dishes are good too. If you know me, I will always seek out a good breakfast place in a city or town that I visit. Thanks to Yelp for opening my eyes to Peanuts Deluxe Cafe. I was literally walking right by it en route to a different place, a half-mile away. Not gonna lie, it looked like a day bar or something not really for breakfast. But they were clearly open, a saw a sign about food, and so I glanced at the Yelp reviews A solid four stars, it said, and I agree. I've now been to Peanuts at least three times while visiting San Jose. I've enjoyed the Denver Omelet with hashbrowns and rye toast, along with coffee. Solid breakfast fare. However, they have more than that. Peanuts has an ambitious and approachable chef, and he's been trying out some specials. This last time there, I tried the Chilaquiles Rojas (with chorizo). Really satisfying, just spicy enough, and the red sauce had a good smokiness to it. Choose how you like your eggs - I can vouch for Over Easy. The chorizo works really well here, nicely merged into the Rojas. I was hungry, so this dish really filled the bill. Also, new (to me at least) was the red potatoes instead of the hashed browns. Infinitely more interesting, with great flavor. Don't get me wrong: I enjoyed their regular hash browns, but you can't beat the delicious flavors of onions and peppers to pop through these spuds. I really like the main guy behind the counter, too. Super friendly, and is happy to bring over more of that delicious citrus-infused water. Did NOT see that coming here, but wow what a great touch. Help yourself to coffee refills. Watch a game here, if you like. They close at 2 pm during the day. Check the hours for any time after that. By then, I've already headed out. They are located right across the street from one of the San Jose State University buildings, and it was busy but not crowded around 1:15pm on a Sunday. I called in my order ahead of time, and it was ready in less than 15 minutes. I stopped in this campus-side restaurant for a quick lunch after leaving campus. I saw they had bbq ribs. An iffy choice in a non-bbq restaurant (this place specializes in breakfast), but I tried them anyway, and surprise! they were good. Small ribs, but very meaty and juicy, covered in a nice sauce. His attitude and behavior over the situation was overall poor over that incident. I had an option other than the greasy standbys that - hey! - let's face it are great for college students, but aren't always favored by the eh hem, grown-ups :) The tongatsu was perfectly fried and crispy, but not greasy, with wonderful brown sauce. Very tasty. I didn't come back to the office feeling bloated and full, but was definitely satisfied with the portion. The owner assured me that the standbys were still there, but the special, like the one I had today, would change weekly. While some might miss the fraternity feel of the old cafe, the new design is both clean and welcoming. They well deserve SJSU community support.
