There are swings, multiple slides, and an assortment of bridges and ropes to climb on. The best part are the expansive shade canopies, which cover the majority of the structure and allow for play in both sun and rain (although, on a rainy morning like this morning, they don't prevent the kids from getting wet or the structure from being slippery. But hey, this just adds to the fun!). Bark ground covering. The one downside here is that the spectator benches are outside of the canopy, away from any trees, and in full sun. I'm thankful they covered the play area, but why no love for the mamas on the sidelines? Not far from the playground there is a large pavilion and multiple covered picnic tables. They aren't right next to the playground like the benches are, but they're close enough to still be within earshot of the kids. It's a fine solution for hot, sunny days. The park also has volleyball courts, baseball fields, and a nice bathroom with plenty of stalls.

The only issue I take with this park is how some people abuse the park and think it's ok to leave trash behind and throw their filth on the ground or to leave food all over where flies get to celebrate on it. The city too isn't taking great care of the park and they would actually get a 1 star for a failure to maintain this facility in the condition it should be. Great place for softball, soccer, basketball and there are lots of picnic tables and BBQ grills. I really wish the city would up their keep. There's lots of parking but some people think it's ok to park on the grass. Overall it's a great park that needs a bit more or should I say better attention from the city. It's new-ish and fun enough for a neighborhood park, but with many outstanding parks in bordering cities, this play structure (and frankly, all the Bedford playgrounds) fails to stand out. Because they've been so spoiled by other parks, my kids claim this one is boring. Objectively speaking, I think it's a fine park for a neighborhood. It's certainly better than Carousel Park down the road! We like the open space and mature trees surrounding the playground. Harris Ryal's proximity to the Bedford Linear Trail is also convenient. We like to take the kids bike riding along the paved trail and this park is a nice little stop along the way. Unfortunately there are some pretty big drawbacks that keep us from visiting Harris Ryals as often as we might otherwise: 1. No bathrooms - with 5 kids that may have to pee or poop at anytime, there's a limit to the amount of time we can spend somewhere with no bathroom. 2. No parking lot - you can park along the street on Cummings, but my kids exit the car from the left side and this dumps them right onto a busy street. Not ideal. 3. No shade over play structure, and no shade over most of the seating areas. 4. Bizarrely low bench seating. They know it's the parents who sit there, right? They were installed at the correct level for a 2 year old. 5. Bark flooring Today (a November Monday around 4pm) there were lots of kids there playing, but every other time I've been, we are the only ones there. Maybe that was just because of COVID. Or maybe most people, like us, just drive to a better park.

I have seen shade canopies at other parks in North Richland Hills, but they seem to be the only city nearby to get this right. I mention the shade issue in my review of almost every single playground because it continues to baffle me. This is Texas. WHY IS SHADE NOT A TOP PRIORITY IN PLAYGROUND DESIGN? In any case, this canopy is great, and allows for play even on afternoons with high temps (bring water!). Unfortunately, the spectator benches are just outside the periphery of the shade, so unless the sun is in just the right spot, parents are either sitting in the sun or sitting on the ground. The structure itself is average. My kids tell me the best part are the two long slides that come off of a three story platform. Apparently they are very dark inside and this makes sliding down them extra fun. Beyond that, there's nothing remarkable about the play structure. Bark flooring, separate toddler structure, no swings. Richfield Park is a three star community park that earns an extra star for the shade.
