Some "fond" memories stick, like being flooded out the first night after a portage from hell on the first day. Since then over all these years, I've had a hankering to hit the water again and revisit nearby Ely. My friends Jeff, Bird, and Gator have been back since, and over the last couple years, we've been talking about returning as a group to the BWCA. We were scheduled for September 2021, but area fires and a few personal situations necessitated a delay. But this September was time for me and 3 great high school classmates to get together and paddle. Gayle thought it was a great idea, but with some humor: Four 66-year old men canoeing out into the wilderness - What could go wrong? Actually, everything went well, and despite 1st day anxiety all around on whether we were cut out for a trip like this at our age. We were out in the BWCA for 5 nights and 6 days, with great fall weather except for one windy morning and a light rainy day. We all got along very well, except for some snoring situations in our shared (2 per) tents, and making the mistake of talking politics one evening. After almost 50 years out of High School and irregularly staying in touch, it was easy to pick up where we left off and have a great meaningful time together. We also wisely decided to hire a professional outfitter (and guide) for our adventure. This way we didn't get lost, equipment (Kevlar canoes, tents, sleeping bags, etc.) were provided, we ate well, we snagged great camp sites, great stories were told, portages were relatively short, and fishing went well. And the scenery! Wow! For all that (and more), we had Moose Track Adventures to thank, particularly the owners (Jim and Joan) and Dan, our intrepid guide. What a great guy! Bird had used Moose Track before and I can understand why folks that have used them come back. Their reasonably priced professional expertise, facilities, and equipment are worth every safety-infused cent. Our field package (see above) also included cabin lodging the night before we hit the water, prior menu selection, transponder tracking (including an emergency button) during our journey, and a sandwich and beer waiting for us when we got out of the water at the end. Dan also provided information from an App showing where we'd been within the BWCA. I was also able to purchase a paper map at Moose Track HQ. At the end, Gator headed off to the Airport, while Jeff, Bird, and I travelled down to Duluth for a hot shower, a celebratory dinner together, and a good night's sleep. It was a stellar trip to remember, that I'd be open to repeating. And if and when we do, we'll be working with Moose Track Adventures.

We caught a lot of fish and had a great time!

This was our 3rd year at the resort. The first two years were good. It is a beautiful lake and…read moreresort and the people running the resort treated us well. This year was a different story. The service was not anything like what my wife and myself had experienced in the past. The problem we had was 2-fold. One was the dock boy services that were a huge letdown compared to the precedent that was set in prior years. The resort somehow lost about 1/3rd of the fish that we brought in to be cleaned! For example we would bring in 20 fish, but only had 15 returned to us. Where did they go? One time one of the dock boys forgot to clean our fish at all! Supposedly they later cleaned the fish that were still alive, but I did not receive any of the fish. On 2 or 3 occasions, they forgot to return our landing net to the boat. There is more I could list, but you get the gist of it. The other issue I have is management's reaction to the problem. They said they were sorry, but there was nothing they could do. All we got were excuses. The manager told me the big thing that the Life of Resort has over other resorts is the services they provide. Well, on this occasion, he admitted, they fell short on those services. The bottom line is that the cost at being at the resort this year did not match the services that were supposed to be rendered. I told the manager I would be reviewing them, but I would give them time to respond. An apology is all well and good, but as a business owner myself, I would have dealt with an issue like this in a much different way. By truly fixing issues with customers, you can gain loyal customers for life! It feels like it is all about the money and they got that from me. I told the manager we would not return in the future and apparently they are ok with this. In the past, I would give this resort 5 out of 5 stars. This year's experience at the resort, I only give them a 2 out of 5 stars.

Everything was clean. The room came with a fully stocked kitchenette which is nice if you want to do some cooking but we ate out. No stove but there is a hot plate, dishwasher and refrigerator. It's nice to have a couch and TV separate from the bedroom. We golfed at The Legend and The Quarry. They were beautiful courses Fairways and greens were well maintained. Legend was a little less than 5100 from the forward tees which was very fair. Quarry was closer to 5200, so longer and much more narrow. Don't forget to look for the giant bear claw on The Legend. Lots of driving between some holes but enjoy the scenery while you are cruising. Great courses. I struggled to rate this. I loved the golf but the accommodations had some pros and cons. Lodging pros - separate bedroom and living area - kitchenette - close to everything we wanted to do - Two TVs Lodging cons - the shower water never got really hot to that end the jacuzzi in the room was never used because we couldn't get it hot enough to want to sit in it - separate rooms are nice but controlling the temp was hard as air conditioning was in bedroom but thermostat was in living room. There are fans to help but in the end the bedroom was usually very cold - the TV in the bedroom was hit or miss on displaying channels. - WiFi was hit or miss. - rooms are owned by individuals so it's like renting a vrbo. To that end, no housekeeping. Not sure if you could request it. We didn't stay long enough for it to be a major issue.
