The main building is a big 18th-century manor house in the Norwegian style. It is made of huge dark logs on the outside, though inside walls are plastered. Rooms have a charming 19th-century feel, but bathrooms are modern and well-equipped, even with heated floors. In addition to the more civilized rooms in the manor, there are several historic outbuildings, including an old stable, a barn that have been converted into guest rooms. In the Middle Ages one building was a kind of bunkhouse for pilgrims traveling north to Trondheim. Breakfast and dinner, with typical Norwegian freshness and substance, are available from the Grytting family (Hilde and Stig). The property itself preserves historic farming techniques, with the help of the Norwegian government. I loved Sygard Grytting's quiet historic feel and the warmth of my hosts. It was a comfortable base from which to explore the Gudbrandahlen, Norway's fertile central valley. If you are tracing your family, as I was, the Grytting family provided a great deal of help, calling ahead to set up a meeting with a town historian. The only drawback was the family's limited English, but they made up for that with their graciousness and help. I would love to go back some day. Sygard Grytting is about 90 miles north of Oslo along the main E6 road between the towns of Hunsdorp and Harpefoss. A sign on E6 marks the entrance.

Although the place is tiny there's a nice selection of olives and other small bites - or tapas as the they're referred to even in this non-Spanish speaking part of the world - the perfect accompaniments to wine and drinks at your next get together. Our visit to Lillehammer was during the summer when the sun seem to spin and barely set behind the mountains for a couple of hours of dusk-darkness, and were lucky enough to spend a beautiful night drinking wine and sampling olives at the tables out front alongside a party of gorgeous Norwegian girls - all friends of the establishment. The area surrounding the bar is actually very beautiful and a nice place to take a stroll and the bar itself is cozy and well suited to seat parties of multiple sizes. Food-wise the prices were pretty decent (from an American perspective). I ended up trying the moose burger and it was well worth a try. The actual meat is slightly gamey--not as satisfying as a beef patty, but the mix of the cranberry jam (or some sort of berry jam?) they put on the burger actually mixed very well with the overall dish. Overall a satisfying experience.

Service was efficient and with a smile by two beautiful and accommodating Norwegian ladies who - although busy - were happy to answer our questions about the food as well as about this beautiful little Norwegian town. Lykkelige Dager (correctly translated to Happy Days) is open six days a week from 9am to 5pm and is a great place to stop by to pick up a healthy lunch or for a take out dinner. Everything is prepared fresh and from high quality ingredients. We highly recommend a visit. Parking can be difficult at times in downtown Lillehammer but there's a parking lot (metered as is everywhere in town) up the hill and behind the larger building.

Long wooden tables that are occasionally shared with strangers, a fireplace in which you are welcome to throw a piece of wood. We ended up going there two nights in a row and I wonder if there were any non-Norwegians in there on either of these nights. The quallity of the food is only average, and the service is done by young girls who seem to have little experience, yet are friendly and helpful. Next to the restaurant is the Nikkers Sportsbar. The restaurant and bar have separate entrances and I can only say that the sportsbar seems to look cozy, from the outside, althougth there is no music but sportsmatches comming out of the speakers. Even the once outside.
