Our daughters both love swimming here! They learned so much and the instructors are all very patient and kind. It has been a great experience because it has taught our three year-old about water safety, and being able to get in and out of the pool. It's a clean facility with a lot of area for parents to sit. We just signed up our 2-year-old for swim lessons, and she had her first lesson today -- so our experience is limited BUT I was just so impressed with our instructor Jamal that I wanted to review Pengu now. If our experience goes downhill I'll modify/update the review later. For a child who's 2 years old, there are 2 options for swim lesson levels at Pengu -- "baby 2" (parent is with child during lesson) or "toddler 1" (no parents in the pool, only the teacher). We opted for the no-parents option, "toddler 1," but I was pretty apprehensive about it and worried that she would be scarred and traumatized by taking a swim class with a teacher whom she had literally just met. Our instructor Jamal was SO nice, gentle, and patient with her. She was not comfortable and kept crying off and on, but he kept encouraging her and being kind and gentle -- and by the end of the 30 minute class she wasn't as upset. I was really impressed with Jamal's friendly and patient demeanor. It really went a long way to ease my daughter's transition into parent-free swim lessons and eased my concerns. Other good things: - Tons of class options available most days of the week, at least a couple of days ago when I checked - The facility is clean and new - Bathrooms are clean (however, no paper towels & no toddler sized potties/toilets -- only an air hand dryer & standard toilets) - Lots of private changing rooms - Multiple lifeguards on duty during class time Caveats/possible negatives: - You are only allowed 1 makeup class per month. If you don't use that month's makeup class, then you can accrue/roll over that makeup class credit to use in future months. - Your monthly class fee is automatically withdrawn on the 1st of every month, and to cancel you have to provide 30 days' written notice. - There are no private showers where you can get your kids naked and use soap/shampoo etc. There is a row of shower heads on a wall by the pool so you can rinse off your kid(s) though. read more

Pengu is a relatively new swim facility (just turned a year old!). The interior is bright, clean, and extremely well-maintained. The changing rooms are spacious and tidy. There is a small play area for your child to play in before/after lessons. Swimsuit spinners and hair dryers are provided for your convenience. I initially brought my child here for a swim clinic but plan to continue lessons year round. A few things you need to know before you commit to lessons here- 1. Makeup Policy: for each month your child attends lessons at Pengu Swim School, you earn one Courtesy Makeup Lesson. These roll over if they are not used. 2. Membership Cancellations: Pengu requires at least 30 days notice to cancel class via a Pengu Swim Class cancellation form (available online or in person). After a month of lessons here, I am impressed by the patience and kindness I have seen all of the instructors display. However, be aware that your child will not receive any type of progress report from Pengu. I heard from a friend that Sea Star Swim School offers a weekly progress report, which seems like a great way to keep track of any progress that has been made. Unfortunately, HSC and Pengu haven't adopted this policy yet. read more

I love this place and the instructors. One thing that is a problem at times is that the fittings rooms get held by parents before the classes are over. People like me who have an infant wait in the cold. They sent out emails to try to improve which has helped a little. We have our 2 kids here for swim lessons and the instructors are first class. Our oldest who is 3 takes lessons with Coach Bri and our 3 year old loves coach bri and has a great time learning how to swim and our youngest 1 year old takes mommy and me classes with coach jamal and he is so good around the young kids and we enjoy this location. The staff is always friendly and specially during COVID are taking the necessary precautions to make sure everyone is safe. read more

We were at this school for about a year. My daughter progressed extremely slow, with 4 kids to 1 instructor the kids probably have at most 7 minutes total with the instructor. We switched to another school - ratios are 1:1 or 2:1 depending on staffing that day but never any more than 2 students and classes are only $20/class. In just 2 classes with the new school I've already seen a drastic improvement compared to the time we were at Pengu. Made me realize I shouldn't have stayed at Pengu for as long as we did. The instructors at Pengu don't really teach the kids adequate form and technique. I felt like they were just getting the kids to complete the task, which I don't blame the instructors because there's so little time with each student. My daughter enjoyed the classes and instructors but ultimately I really wanted her to learn how to swim. read more

My daughter has been attending Pengu since May, so I thought now would be a good time to post my review. For reference, she's in the babies 1 class where the parents go in the pool with the kids. - Once you enter, you "check in" at the front desk so they can take attendance. You then go to the cubbies and drop off our bags, taking towels with us as there's a towel rack (this is important because it is SO cold in the lobby area compared to the pool. I forgot this the first time and really paid the price. -The babies section is all the way at the end. The instructor is super sweet and amazing. She's always in a great mood, which helps my baby feel comfortable as she's always friendly toward her. -It's a 30 minute class and time FLIES. -Once you're out of the pool, there are standing showers. Like a previous review says, these are all out in the open, so there is no privacy to legit clean up. -This reminds me - babies are to wear a disposable swim diaper underneath their cloth swim diaper. There is a fee if your baby has an accident in the water - so don't forget this part! -Once you enter the lobby area again, there are plenty of changing rooms with changing tables. There is also a hairdryer area along with a little machine that speed dries wet clothes. -You have one "make-up" session a month, and they accumulate for the year. However, if you miss more than one class a month, you can still only make up one. -If you miss a class, you can't schedule your make-up until the class has been missed. The availability also depends on how full the class is, and if anyone has called in sick (resulting in space). Just a heads up - the babies 1 class is "full" with 6 babies. Overall, I'm glad we chose Pengu. This is something my daughter and I have grown to enjoy. I was told we'll be able to move to the "babies 2" class when she turns 2, so looking forward to that. The only downside is the classes are a bit repetitive, but I keep reminding myself that at this age, repetition is key and it's what will help her remain comfortable in the water. My family and I are super excited to have Pengu Swim School in the Sugar Land/Missouri City area. Back before we moved from Houston to Sugar Land, we took our children to the Pengu in the Heights. So, we already loved the Pengu system and quickly enrolled at the Riverstone location once they opened up enrollment. And, after taking both boys to their first lesson this past week at the brand new Riverstone facility, I knew that my family and I will like this location just as much as the one in the Heights. Here's some of the reasons why: - year-round weekly lessons with just a few students in each class so my kids get more focus and attention (haven't tried the private lessons yet), - if you miss a class and you let them know ahead of time, you accrue a make-up class that you can use at other class times or as admission to an open swim, - great facilities, including tons of changing rooms, a play area for kids who are waiting or have just finished their lesson, a viewing area for parents to see their kids swim (or just relax in the absence of their kids, ha!), - friendly staff at the front who help you with whatever you need, - enthusiastic staff in the water who train your kids to be comfortable in the water, - attentive lifeguards who are...attentive, - a training method that I've personally seen transform my kid from someone who cried when I told him we were going to swim class to someone who can't wait another second to go to swim class. After having my kids in the Pengu system for 2 years, I have seen them, not only grow more comfortable in the water, but also know what to do in the water. So I look forward to continuing with my kids' training at Pengu Riverstone. read more

We had our daughter's 4th birthday party here this past weekend. I cannot even express how impressed we were with the experience! The staff was extremely helpful with set up and tear down. They helped pass out pizza and cake. There were 3 lifeguards on duty (one in the water who was so great with the kids!!). It was zero stress and everyone had a great time! I just had my first swim lesson for my two year old son. I've had experience with three other swim schools and this one hands down is the best and has thought of everything! I didn't feel stressed at all during the process as I have in the past at other swim schools. The instructors were nice and patient with all the students. Being our first day, my little one was upset going in the pool without mommy. They also have two lifeguards inside helping monitor all the ongoing classes so if someone is in distress the teacher is not alone. The class size was 3:1 and our group only had two. The kids shower once they get out of the pool poolside with suits on to get the chlorine out of the suits and hair. Every changing room is roomy with a changing table and spot to dispose of the swim diaper. Then lastly what I appreciated was a water extraction machine to spin the swim suit in! This was a perfect first experience. If your looking for a swim school look no further, give them a try. No I didn't get anything for writing this review. I feel pool safety is very important for all children! read more
