As one of the few, if not the only place, that has nasi lemak, this establishment does a great job in providing dishes that range from Chinese to Malaysian to Singaporean cultures. I believe that since COVID they have transitioned to takeout only, and it's great to see that the business is still thriving even if they are still operating under the takeout only model despite how the world has evolved away from the pandemic. For the few dishes that I came here for, qualities varied, with some dishes lacking flavor while others simply sloppily created. The Hainanese chicken relied solely on the extra dipping sauces for flavor while the chicken itself had no flavor alone. The nasi lemak had good flavor mainly because of the sambal, and the chicken had good texture. I didn't see any peanuts in the dish, which I thought was needed for nasi lemak. The sizzling beef and ginger scallion duck had pretty expected flavor because of their ingredients, meaning that what they looked like was what they tasted like, if that makes sense. When I got food from there a second time 4 months later, overall the food was better. The chili tofu wasn't spicy at all even if I asked for spicy in my original order. The char kway teow had both good flavor and soft texture, allowing a positive tasting experience. The sambal shrimp had a good amount of vegetables and not enough shrimp, and had very good flavor because of the sambal infused with the dish. Because their menu is huge, I think they have an adequate selection of options that can serve customers of all kinds. Even though this is not one of my favorite spots within the Twin Cities, the dishes they have already solidifies this establishment as a "must not miss" within the area. read more

We had a delicious takeout meal from Peninsula! I gifted my husband a passport to Eat Street restaurants this year, and Peninsula was high on my list of places to try. At the time, I didn't realize it was take out only. However, it worked out for us to pick it up as we headed to a friend's house for dinner. We ordered: BBQ Pork Lo Mein - simple and classic, not much for veggies Spicy Basil Beef - delicious, could be spicier Pineapple Chicken - think on sweet and sour sauce but tasty Spicy Tofu - SO good, their tofu is made in house! Crispy outside, soft inside Roti Canai - amazing! No wonder this is a top rec on Yelp Dumplings - average but good! This is a takeout-only store I found on Fantuan and have to give it a try since I adore Malaysian food. The banana roti is mediocre as it's too moist and soft with thick skin -- unlike the roti I had in Southeast Asia. Hainanese chicken and rice is flavorful and authentic, though I think the chicken has room for improvement. Even though Peninsula is still takeout only, it's still one of my go-to places if I want a warm and comforting meal. This was one of the first places I really ate at regularly when I first moved here, and the food is just as good now! They have some great (and reasonably priced!!) appetizers, but my favorites are the achat salad ($6.50) and the roti canai ($5.50). The achat is the perfect blend of sour with a little bit of spice, and the peanut adds really great depth of flavor, and it's sooo good with some of the richer entrees. The roti is always perfectly soft, and the curry dipping sauce is delicious. For the entrees, I have literally never gotten anything except for their tofu dishes because they make this homemade egg tofu that is INCREDIBLE. (Obviously, not vegan-friendly, but I believe you can request regular tofu in any of the tofu dishes to make them vegan!) I love their chili tofu ($14) and curry tofu hot pot ($15), but you can't miss with any of those dishes. read more

When I came upon this restaurant on Uber Eats, I was shocked that I hadn't heard of it before. Take out only, but so many incredible reviews! We ordered and the food came quickly, hot and packaged well. The portions were huge too! The taro roti was delicious, soft and not too sweet. The pig feet were cooked perfectly, with excellent flavor and texture. The fried rice was really lovely too, only complaint would be the fishiness of some of the seafood. We are no where near the ocean, so I can't complain too much. The Hainan chicken was perfectly cooked--soft, juicy, and tender. The tofu was the star for me though. It is homemade egg tofu! So so so soft and has that light sweetness that paired so well with the spiciness of the chili. The owners also gave us two rices that we didn't order, one regular and one chicken rice. We have ordered take out here in the past and enjoyed it. Today we ordered Spicy Lemongrass Shrimp (medium) and Singapore Fried Mee Hoon. The Lemongrass shrimp was good, not great, not spicy at all. The Singapore Fried Mee Hoon was awful. There was fish sauce in it, the shrimp smelled off, there was no egg to be seen, and no curry flavor or aroma at all. Whatever that was, it wasn't Singapore rice noodles, and I have a pretty flexible palate but the dish was inedible. A huge disappointment. read more

Wow, years later... We ordered curbside pick up, which was super easy and fast. I called ahead and provided my credit card number. Just remember at pickup to add your tip!! My husband is still a fan of the Shrimp Puffs and ordered them again. Aw, man. They are so tasty and jammed with shrimp. The dipping sauce is tangy, just perfect with the puffs. He also ordered the Walnut Jumbo Shrimp; small wonder as it's his favorite all over the Twin Cities. He plated his dinner beautifully, as my photos show. I tried the Achat Salad, which fit perfectly with my "Summer of the Pickle" trend that I've got going. That salad is amazing! I'd order it by the quart and enjoy it all week (or in one wild pig-out session). I also had the Char Kway Teow, which found its way in my mouth well after I was full; so yummy with lots of seafood! I've been going to this restaurant more or less since it opened. The original recipes were incredible and our family regularly ate here for special occasions. Pineapple fried rice, Char Kway Teow, Hainanese chicken all great choices. Then the restaurant changed hands and I found myself only ordering takeout occasionally. Always Char Kway Teow. It was still very good but got very pricey at nearly $19. I just ordered it again for the first time in years and see it is now just a takeout spot for lunch. Flavor was seriously lacking and the ingredients are now inferior with tiny shrimp and chewy flavorless squid. Prices have come down significantly so that is why I gave the 3rd star. Perhaps other dishes are now a specialty but I don't anticipate I will be back. read more

Peninsula Malaysian Cuisine, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, offers a delightful culinary journey through Malaysian flavors. Some of my frequently ordered delights include the crispy Roti Canai served with spicy curry chicken, seafood chow fun, Takoyaki balls appetizer (recently added to their menu in the past year), seafood Char Kway Teow (no pork lard available), Nasi Lemak and the sweet Mango Sticky Rice dessert. The food at Peninsula Malaysian Cuisine passes as authentic and delicious (depending on what you order). The Hokkien mee for example, uses udon noodles instead of the traditional mee used and is served with thick dark soy sauce following Malaysian's style but delicious nonetheless! As a born and raised Peranakan, I can't certify their Nonya Laksa but the Mee Siam can still make it... If I could make a recommendation, it would be to see the Hainanese chicken rice have roasted chicken option added as an alternative to the traditional white/boiled method as it's already a popular favourite. I hadn't been back to Peninsula since my original review nearly 13 years ago. Located on Nicollet Avenue, it's a Malaysian spot with a few unusual offerings, but is exceedingly difficult for vegans to navigate. The "satay tofu" ($7.25) appetizer features giant blocks of tofu stuffed with greens and a semi-sweet peanut sauce. I didn't love it but didn't hate it. The "mock duck" ($13) consists of bundles of tofu skins with a brown mushroom sauce on the side. There's no straightforward way to make this dish vegan online, but I said "no fish/oyster sauce" in the online ordering comments (the dish doesn't otherwise contain animal products). In the Upper Midwest the term "mock duck" is usually synonymous with tinned wheat gluten from China and Vietnam, so Peninsula has an unusual spin on it. That said, the dish falls flat with bland flavors. The spicy golden tofu ($14) I thought was vegan, and this dish curiously had a "make vegetarian" checkbox in the online ordering. But I forgot that Peninsula offers two types of tofu: one store-bought and one home-made and made with eggs. I'm pretty sure this dish has the egg version based on taste. In any case, it wasn't good, with soft tofu in a meh sauce. Also, who makes tofu with eggs? How bizarre. The "Malay Buddhist Delight" ($13) comprises glass noodles, tofu skins and vegetables in a orange-colored sauce. It didn't taste bad, but didn't impress either. Lastly, you can get "coconut rice" for $2. This tasted marginally better than regular white rice, but I wouldn't bother with it again. It's a shame Peninsula doesn't have many vegan options, nor does it label them for ease of ordering. I'd be there at least once a week if they had a vegan roti canai. As it stands, I'd much rather go to Jasmine 26 one block east, Harry Singh's one block south or Khun Nai Thai, one block north. read more

I was craving roti and Malaysian curry soup, so I ordered delivery, despite all of the groceries we just bought like 2 hours earlier... We got roti canai, kari mee and kari sayur (vegetables). The roti was very thin and dry, but the curry to dip it in was pretty good! I appreciated the tender bone-in chicken thigh that was in the curry. My partner got the kari sayur which paired well with the rice. I tried a bite and liked the red pepper flavor. I unfortunately didn't love my kari mee, which is described as, "a spicy lemongrass, coconut curry" noodle soup with shrimp and chicken. It was not spicy, in fact it was kinda bland, and the texture of the chicken was off-putting. Honestly, I kinda hate writing this so-so review, but hopefully I'll have a better experience to update this soon! The steamed Haianese chicken with rice ($12.99) was my favorite to point of becoming my usual order. The chicken was succulent and tender, the rice was so good I would often request a second bowl, and the sauce, ginger puree, and chili dip were all on point. Always. The plate I was served recently looked as appetizing as ever - but the sauce was off, and the rice was dry as was the chicken. On a cold winter day, craving spicy food, we ordered from here. Dishes ordered were roti telur, Penang lobak, beef rendang and a noodle dish. I say noodle dish because after trying the rest of the dishes I didn't want to risk trying it. The roti telur was the best of the lot. The curry was good but the roti was bland. The beef rendang could have been good if the beef wasn't tough to chew and there was enough salt. Having lived several years in Indonesia and Singapore I hoped that there might be something to remind me of those places here. Sadly the short answer is not really. I feel like a lot of the dishes are more Chinese than Malaysian and I was confused to see so many Thai dishes on the menu. Generally you can't go wrong with any of their noodle or fried rice dishes, those are hard to get wrong. The Chicken Satay was pleasantly tender, juicy and the peanut dipping sauce was pretty good (although strangely oily), but 5 small skewers for $8.25 I was underwhelmed. Sadly I was shocked that the most traditional dishes were their worst. My Malaysian friends were horrified by the incredibly bad beef Rendang, Laksa, Hainanese Chicken Rice and Nasi Lemak (only exception being the very good dried anchovy sambal). The curries and Rendang were soupy and watery, didn't taste anything like Malaysian flavors! The Roti was soft with the right amount of chewiness but the dipping "soup" was again very watery. I've ordered a few times from here via DoorDash and while nothing here reminds me of the authentic Malaysian or Singaporean dishes I had in-country, there are still a few things worth coming back for. Considering you're dropping $30-$40 for a couple dishes here they really need to do better especially considering how much they promote themselves as the "truly authentic Malaysian restaurant". read more

I love this place but you have to know what dishes to get. I take my out-of-town friends and colleagues here, especially my Asian friends (that is saying something right?! bahaha). I've been going here for over 10 years and was recently back over on Lunar New Year and had a great time. It's about time I wrote a review! THE FOOD An absolute must-get here is the Spicy Golden Tofu. They make the tofu in-house and it's crispy outside, soft inside & flavorfulness will make you resist your midwest ways and fight for the last pieces. We lucked out last time I was in because I mentioned wanting to order a whole fish and the server told us they just got fresh red snapper a couple hours before. We jumped on that and were so glad we did. It was cooked with Malay spices and it was crispy on the outside and super tasty. Note that the fish will come with teeth and eyeballs but that just shows how absolute legit this place is! I also recommend Roti Canai since you can't get it this way anywhere else in the city. Get a veggie dish too like the Chinese broccoli or green beans to share. Dishes I was less thrilled about included the Fried Eggplant, Tofu Peanut Skewers, & Yam Pot. They were ok but just kinda meh. THE AMBIANCE This place is huge so I also come here when I know other smaller restaurant may be packed. A lot of people do family celebrations here and it was especially fun to see all the kids dressed in their finest to celebrate the Year of the Dog recently. You can come here dressed up or casual. I love that this place is for a date, work meeting, family reunion, or girls night. The noise isn't too loud either so you can actually have a conversation and not feel like you're shouting. Serve staff has always been friendly, helpful, and courteous. They will also pack up leftovers if you want. OVERALL TIPS: - PARKING: They have free offstreet parking in the evening in a lot across the street, down a block or so. There's a sign that indicates it is for Peninsula. This is a huge plus on Eat Street where there's limited street parking and it's notorious for ticketing. -SANGRIA: Check in on Yelp and get a free drink. Is it the best drink in the world? Nah, but who cares. It's free, comes with a lychee, and it's a great way to start your meal. I don't know about you but when I get free things, I'm instantly in a better mood ;) -FAMILY-STYLE: Getting a bunch of things to share is definitely the best meal experience here. Plus, portions are pretty huge. Get a veggie dish, tofu, fish, noodle, etc. This is a high-traffic restaurant area, but even with the competition, this is a go-to-place for me. Came here last night for dinner and was definitely impressed. It's pretty unassuming, no big bright signage, it's not crowded, simple decor and tables. But the staff were incredibly prompt, helpful, and polite. We live in the south metro and it took longer round trip to get to and from than it took to sit, order, eat, and pay which I truly appreciate. The food was amazing, very flavorful, and there's a ton of options on the menu. The time it took for them to make our food and get it to the table puts 99% of all other eateries to shame- including some fast food drive throughs! It would be a long review so to get to the point first for people who need a quick recommendation: if you can eat spicy food, order the Nyonya Laska; don't order shrimp puff or beef sizzling. My friend and I were very excited to try this place since we have heard so many good things about it. The shrimp puff was a bit unimpressive. We could taste a hint of shrimp and a hint of bacon but the flavor was not dominate. The battered definitely overwhelmed other ingredients. The white sauce served together actually made the dish tasted better; however, in general, the dish still tasted like fried batter dipped in a good sauce. In term of the beef sizzling, not to be frank, but it tasted like the Mongolian beef that you would find at a Chinese restaurant. The beef is prepared similarly and the seasoning was pretty much the same with any stir fried dish at a mediocre Chinese place. However, the star of the night, the one that stole my hear and earned a 4-star review for this restaurant was the Laska. The toppings and the noodles were good and everything, but the broth...the spicy coconut broth was excellent! The coconut flavor blended very well with the spiciness; the broth consistency was thick enough to taste the coconut but thin enough to make it a broth and not a sauce. The broth was also lightly sour, balancing out the spiciness of it. It was also slightly sweet, which went very well with the noodles and the toppings. I think I'd come back for more of the Laska. Good Malaysian food is hard to come by in the states. I've eaten my share across Asia, but every place I've found in the us is a true diamond in the rough; and this place was no exception. Fantastic service, my drinks were always full, and the staff were incredibly helpful, kind, and incredibly FAST! I personally had the roti canai and beef rendang. Roti canai was fantastic. A little spicier than most I've had, but quite delicious. Out in 3 minutes from my order. Rendang is one of my very favourite foods, and although it could have been a little spicier, (i assume this was due to American palates/spice level tolerance. I also didn't mention i have a higher spice tolerance than most) Either way, This dish did not disappoint. I am full, my belly and heart are happy . What more can you ask for? read more

Veggies were mushy, bland, flavorless and obviously frozen and not fresh. Chicken wings frozen with absolutely no meat on the bone, just old crusty skin. Bland. Have heard of Peninsula Malaysian and am often in the Eat Street area. However, I never made the extra effort venture to try this place which is a shame. Net Net, this is a GREAT restaurant and is representative of Malaysian/Singaporean cuisine. I went with a friend to celebrate and was greeted by friendly staff. The ambiance is also different than other Asian restaurants as it has a trendy "Bar La Grasa" feel to it, yet without sacrificing quality. Ordered three dishes - Appetizer: chicken satay sticks (5/5) - Entree 1: Hainanese steamed chicken with chicken flavored rice (5/5) - Entree 2: Nasi Lamak (4/5) *Tip - use your Yelp app to check-in and receive a free sangria on the house! These dishes were all amazing. The satay sticks were hearty and went well with the peanut-based sauce provided. The steamed chicken was flavorful, fresh, and succulent to the last bits and pieces of the bones. I have tried this dish at Chinese restaurants around town, but it nowhere competes with this version. The nasi lamak has all the components though I felt like something was missing from it that did not give it a 'wow' factor like I had hoped. Next time I visit, I will need to try the roti canal, spicy golden tofu, and mi goreng...
