Great food, great atmosphere, and great service! We were just walking by and discovered this Italian restaurant and couldn't be happier. They are not right on the water (just a few blocks away) so there is not a 3 hour wait, but the front patio is cozy and relaxing! They are good for couples or families and we came back again on our week trip canceling highly sought after reservations because it was so nice to have a nice meal without fighting crowds! It's funny, the first time I went to this place I wasn't super impressed - obviously the refill rule ticked me off. That said - over the years, every single time I visit Maui I end up coming here. I've walked by this place a dozen times and always wanted to stop in. We came to the Banyan Tree lighting ceremony and rather than fight a flood of tourists on Front Street, we decided to give Penne a try. I am gluten intolerant and so I was thrilled to have more options than just another salad. I had the GF Penne with clams and my husband had the chicken parm. The clams were perfectly cooked (not like pencil erasers) and the sauce was lemony and light. My husband said "yum" about 10 times and ate every bite. We sat outside and enjoyed a nice meal being away from the crowds. We'll make the long journey back from Kihei for more excellent food and multiple Gluten Free choices! read more

We stopped in here for dinner and I wanted to go to this place for the gluten free options since I have celiac disease. I got the fettuccine Alfredo with gluten free pasta and it was delicious. This is the best pesto I have ever had!!!!! They were pretty fast in bringing the food out and everything was so fresh and absolutely delicious! I am vegan and gluten-free so I was very excited to find this place because I couldn't find anywhere else in the area that did gluten-free pizza crust as well as vegan cheese. They close at 9:30 p.m. and I started calling at about 8:45 to place a to-go order. We tried calling several times with no answer. We then went in person and found the door locked and the employees inside cleaning up. When I attempted to open the door they acted like they didn't see me but I'm sure they did. Disappointed I walked back to our car but my husband said that was unacceptable as it was only 9 p.m. and it said on the door they were not supposed to close until 9:30. So he knocked on the door. One of the employees seemed reluctant at first to except our order and went to check with the chef first. The chef eventually said that it was fine & took the order. The staff were polite but this whole scenario was quite annoying since they were still supposed to be open for another half an hour. They said they just closed early because it was slow but that makes no sense because we'd been trying to call to place an order and they just weren't answering. As someone who works in customer service, I totally understand wanting to hurry up and go home in the evening, but definitely found this to be an annoying experience. With all that said though, the pizza tasted really good, although it was a little undercooked. And I hate to give bad reviews to any restaurant that has vegan and gluten-free options as I deeply appreciate them! But I feel like this situation needed to be expressed.So because of that I am still giving them 4 stars. I will still go back next time I'm in Maui and would like to try more of their vegan gluten-free options. I just think that their customer service could be improved based on the situation. Being Celiac, I needed to research possible places to eat Gluten-free (GF) before arriving in Maui. Before visiting, I sent an email to an email address I found on the 'net for Penne Pasta, because I had found information that made it sound like this place might serve GF food, but the reference to GF was vague. To my surprise I received a nice response back from the former owner putting me in contact with the current owner. That alone was impressive although it has no impact on this review. It just made me really look forward to the Aloha Spirit I'd be encountering on this vacation. Shortly after that, the owner Juan, emailed me & let me know what was GF on the menu and what was not and why. We ate here on our first night in Maui. The food was really fresh, and they have signs clearly stating that they have both GF pasta & dairy/lactose free cheese. There's an upcharge for both, but that's to be expected, special dietary items simply cost more than mass-produced food...I'm cool with that! I had the Penne Bolognese. It came out super hot and had fresh basil cut over the top of the sauce. My husband (not GF) had the pizza that was on Special - Goat Cheese. It had one of those super thin crusts. He really enjoyed it. I asked if Juan was in but, sadly, was told he was on holiday. Alas, looks like I'll have to plan another trip to Maui to put a face with the email and to thank him personally. This was our 2nd year vacationing in beautiful Maui and staying at the Aina Nalu, a stone's throw from Penne Pasta. We did't get a chance to eat at PP last year but made it a point to have dinner this time and we weren't disappointed. The menu is your typical "Olive Garden" type fare. You order and then sit down and they bring your food to your table. We order and sit down. The restaurant itself is pretty small, so I can see why they get busy so easily. Our food arrives and looks fantastic! The portions were decent and the pasta was tasty but the sauce on my shrimp scampi was a little watered down. Nevertheless it still tasted good! The kids both got fettucine alfredo and loved their dishes! The garlic cheese bread was fabulous, but give me a break...you can't really screw up garlic bread! All in all, it was a good dinner choice and perfect break from the usual Maui fare of burgers and fish. read more

We went to Penne Pasta Cafe for a quick dinner last night. My daughter, who would eat for every meal if she could, had asked after a week of things she doesn't eat (seafood and traditional hawaiian food) if we could find a meal for her. The decor is cute. Simple, clean. Love the pictures on the wall. And of course, the giant TV with the Dodgers game on. Which brings me to the best part of the review: the owner, Juan. The man takes true pride in his establishment. You can see it in the way he takes care of the counter, the way he greats returning customers, how he works the room, shaking hands and asking how people's meals were. We talked baseball (guy knows his stuff and he's a HUGE Dodgers fan...if you're coming from LA, bring him a bobble head...trust me) for a few minutes while he took our order. He even let my kids taste his sauce to see if they like it before they ordered. Everything about Juan's customer service is on point! for this. The food: I ordered a flat bread pizza with sausage and salami. It was pretty good, super thin crust. Everyone else had pasta. Portions sizes were ok, wouldn't have minded a bit more but I'm remembering that restaurants here aren't like where I come from. Everyone ate their meals without issue. With all the restaurants in Lahaina closed we appreciate the fact that Penny pasta is staying open for take out. Most have not. Their food is great, we eat here at least once a week when we are in Lahaina. Now that we want to support their take-out business were taking advantage of them even more. Darn. This was not worth 20$ which I thought was a decent price until I saw what I was getting. I had taken a bite or 2 of the pasta and realized the pathetic amount of sauce and frankly the portion of pasta as well and decided to take a pic. The pasta wasn't so bad but it wasn't all that good either. There was almost no bolognese to the dish- barely any meat at all like 2 bites worth. The beets were pretty good no complaints there I guess. I was going to try Sal Pepe but specifically chose Penne pasta instead because there was a bolognese on the menu. Super disappointing! There was a guy lounging at the register with his feet kicked up watching TV. There was NO ONE ELSE there. Bad sign, when there are no other patrons in a restaurant during dinner time. We ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo and Chicken Parmesan. The Fettuccine Alfredo was bland. The basics in cooking from Chef Robert Irvine is the use of salt and pepper, neither was used to prepare either dishes. The Chicken Parmesan was also bland and tasteless. The spaghetti was overcooked and the sauce was watery. I think I used half the container of parmesan cheese from the shaker, but it did nothing to help the dish. Honestly, I wouldn't come back. What a nice experience sitting out on the front patio of this good restaurant a couple of blocks from the Lahaina waterfront. We started with some of the best calamari I've ever eaten, washed down with a good red wine. Next a fresh Caesar's salad and finally great penne pasta with pesto and cheese topping and pasta with a spicy tomato sauce that had a unique flavorful bite to it. We left full and needed a walk down Lahaina's Front Street to feel comfortable enough to head back to our B and B. A Good experience provided by the welcoming owner who hails from Jalisco, Mexico! I eat a lot, and I was actually pretty satisfied with my meal (split a huge nicoise salad and baked penne NY); granted I've been eating 4 meals while on Maui b/c the walks to/on/from the beach is a sure calorie-burner! I would def come again, when seeking non-island food or generally good tasting food in W. Maui! We were taking the food to go so to be on the safe side, got the Baked Penne NY (beef) and the Nicoise Salad. We were dying to eat it, but needed to make a few stops, and it was such a tease!!! It smelled sooo good!!! The salad is $13 and it's really worth it. The chef kindly set aside the garlic marinated ahi tuna so that we can mix it ourselves. The salad is packed w/ all sorts of goodness like soy beans, olives, eggplant, etc. and this puts other salads to shame (they're like, weeds in the pavement). And I must say this is the BEST NICOISE SALAD i've ever had!!!!! There are plenty french restaurants w/ fancy sounding NS and I've been disappointed (both by price and the puniness of the dish)... but not here my friends!!! And despite not being able to eat the pasta on the spot, it was still al dente. I don't think the baked penne is necessarily a signature dish, but it was standard and decent. The sauce tastes comfortingly authentic. There are plenty of over-rated restaurants on Front St. (like Kimo's) where it's expensive and not necessarily top-notch tasting. But I agree w/ PPC's awards (5 consecutive yrs or so?), that their food is truly worth their value. read more

I've tried a handful of things and I have to say that nothing sticks out. I use to work nearby and we ordered company lunches many times and I've gone in for lunch on my own a couple of times as well. And it's a rip off. The sauces aren't flavorful, I've had to add salt each time (which in my book is a big no-no!). When you add chicken to any dish, there's not much chicken. I always feel hungry after an hour with a bland aftertaste and a big hole in my wallet. I rather spend less $$ and have more tasty food at Jay's Place a couple of blocks away.
