Honestly, I'm so behind on trying Pennyroyal, and am glad I finally did. We came here during the summer with two kiddos in tow. The restaurant is beautiful inside, but we decided to sit outside since it was nice out. The space was clean and spacious enough for antsy kiddos while also being intimate enough to enjoy our family time out. The food was A+ and our server was not only friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, but she was fluent in toddler! She anticipated our needs as parents - throughout the dinner. For example, when going over the dessert options, our server spelled "ice cream" protecting us from potential meltdowns if that was not in the plan that night! I visited during restaurant week for brunch with a group of friends. Upon entering, we couldn't help but notice the beautiful decor! From the plants that lined the windows to the furniture and dish ware. The restaurant is very open and airy with lots of natural light. The restaurant week special for brunch was $25 and came with an appetizer, entree and dessert. It started with a plate of fresh pastries, those were very tasty. I ordered an oatmilk latte which I enjoyed. They have other coffee drinks as well as brunch cocktails and mimosas. They have bottomless mimosas for $23 which is a great deal. For my entree, I ordered the shrimp and grits. That was delicious and so flavorful!! The portion sizes are well worth the price. The dessert choices were coffee cake and banana pudding. I had the pudding and it was a nice treat to finish off my meal. The servers were so friendly but I thought the service could have been a little more attentive. The decor is beautiful and welcoming. For drinks we ordered the Pink Flamingo and Stubborn Mule, both were tasty. For bites we went with three of their popular selections: Crabby Deviled Farm Eggs w/Chili Relish, Fried Green Tomatoes w/Remoulade and the Smokey Brisket & Marrow Mac & Cheese. All in all, the food was a bit underwhelming. My favorite bite was the crabby deviled eggs. Second runner up were the Fried Green tomatoes. This was my first time with my friend trying this spot out. The decor is really charming. The food was a bit underwhelming. The brisket Mac and cheese is more like a stroganoff than a traditional Mac and cheese. I wouldn't have thought it was mac and cheese at all since I barely tasted cheese. On Wednesday, my Cousins boyfriend decided he was going to propose to her on her birthday. We needed a venue to do this. I reached out to Garrick and he agreed to accommodate us, what we thought would be 16 people. As word spread, over 40 people showed up last night. Garrick and his team were SO GRACIOUS to us. The service was outstanding. Lauren, our host, held it down. Chris, the bartender, kept the drinks flowing; and Garrick was very supportive. I know we literally took over the spot last night (the disadvantage of being popular...everybody wants to come). The food was amazing! Those fried green tomatoes...OMG! The service was on the slower side. I want give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they were short staffed but I also saw a similar comment in another review. We waited a bit for the hostess to arrive, a server eventually stopped by and told us the hostess would be with us soon so we knew we were at the right place. Despite not having a reservation we were able to get a seat (as was the party behind us). There's plenty of seating outside and inside. The outdoor seating cover is good for sun but not for rain (it's made out of a sail) and with the iffy forecast we chose to sit inside. Our waiter was friendly but like the hostess took a while to get back to us. Usually we have to turn a waiter away once or twice before being ready to order but here we had to wait quite a while to even place our order. And the same thing happened while waiting to ask for the check, and for having payment processed. Good thing we enjoy conversing with each other! Despite the wait and our not as solid food choices I'd like to give them another shot. I think there's potential for some stellar dishes and it's fun that they have a constantly rotating menu. But next time we'll try their tried and true appetizers that they're famous for; fried green tomatoes and Mac and cheese. What we got: Juicy fruit - 4.5* it was fantastic! I didn't like the taste that made me think of pineapple but there was no pineapple listed in the ingredients, just citrus. Slow roasted rabbit biscuits - 4* I've never had rabbit before. It was pretty good and the biscuits were phenomenal. Stinging nettle linguine - 2.5* this wasn't my dish but I was very surprised with how bland it was. The linguine itself has potential but the sauce was sorely lacking in flavor. We considered asking for salt but honestly, with the slow service that night who knows when we would've gotten it. Chicken & andouille sausage gumbo - 3.5* more flavor than the linguine by far! I've been wanting to go to Pennyroyal Station for the longest time. Every time my friend and I drove past it, their spring-y exterior caught our eye and we would say we have to try them out. We finally went out for brunch one weekend morning, but unfortunately it did not hit the spot. The host was friendly and welcoming, and I did love the dark green tones in their decor. But that's about all I liked about this place. Between my friend and I, we had the fried chicken sammy with western fries and the pancakes stack. The pancakes were alright, but nothing to write home about. The chicken sammy was one of the worst I've ever had. The chicken tasted old which was very disappointing. We were helped by two servers. Funny thing was that one of them was clearly sick (coughing and snotty) but not wearing a mask or anything. But the server who wasn't sick was actually wearing a mask. I love the interior of this restaurant. It's like a rustic barn with plants and eclectic wallpaper. The service is solid and the food comes out quickly. I've been here several times and staff are enthusiastic kind and knowledgeable. I first came to try the vegan deconstructed pot pie--which is fabulous and lives up to the hype. Next I've tried the fried green tomatoes, deviled eggs and chips and dip, all good but I prefer the tomatoes. Recently I tried the pumpkin lasagna, which is rich and filling. Have I been here for brunch on two different occasions? YES. Is this my new brunch spot? YES AGAIN. On both occasions I've sat outside because I just enjoy the outdoor vibes with the wall murals, the shades, and people watching. My first time here I had the shrimp and grits. I have Louisiana ties so I'm usually reluctant to get shrimp and grits outside of Louisiana but IT WAS GOOD. Probably amongst the best shrimp and grits I've had. My second time here the waiter suggested the fried chicken pancake, which I was hesitant about at first, but I'm glad I ordered it! The fried chicken, with the pork belly bits, and the jalapeño and the sweetness of the syrup on the pancake... DELICIOUS. The fried pancake was filling too, I didn't need any additional sides. If I could just rate this place based on the brunch, I would give it a 5-star rating! I loved the creativity of their fried chicken pancake and thought the jalapeño was a nice little touch. Cute little place with great food, amazing drinks, and absolutely phenomenal staff. I'm a sucker for a well-made cocktail and this place delivers. I started my visit with a Bourbon's Aide which was something of a cross between a whiskey sour and a margarita (made with bourbon) but with a slight lemongrass twist. It was good, but after the first one I decided to switch it up and try the Old Fashioned Manhattan, which was literally the best of both worlds: the perfect blend of both cocktails that make up its namesake, and one of the most amazing bourbon cocktails I've had in a long time. The perfect amount of sweet, bitter, and bite. Loved it! Unfortunately, we made it just as brunch was ending and the only thing they were serving were pupusas stuffed with shredded zucchini and cheese. The pupusas were amazing though! They were large and full of delicious filling (plus, they snuck in some veggies... BONUS!!). Sadly, the kitchen ran out, so we were not able to order another portion, or any other food items, until the kitchen reopened at 5:00.... 2 hours later. Fortunately, good company makes the time go quickly and before we knew it, the kitchen was open again. We started with an order of housemade chips and onion dip (soooo good), then ordered the crab deviled eggs, brisket and bone marrow mac and cheese, the Local Peach Salad, and my friend ordered the crab soup. The onion dip was creamy, flavorful and obviously house made. Very good! The mac and cheese was Sugar Daddy-levels of rich, thanks to the bone marrow. The brisket added both a delightful texture and a pleasant smokiness to the dish. I really enjoyed this unique twist on an old favorite. The Local Peach Salad was ok. The grain mustard dressing was a tart and slightly spicy addition that really gave the salad a pleasant bite. However, the beets were diced a bit too small for me to really taste them, and the peaches were not sweet at all which was really disappointing. This salad had the potential to be amazing with all the different flavor and texture combinations, but unfortunately it only came out average. My friend raved about the crab soup. There were plenty of crab claws and clusters in there, not to mention that the bowl of soup was huge. That portion was easily enough for two people and based on what she told me, it's a must try! The outdoor patio section was wonderful. The tarp covering provides a much welcome respite from the midday sun and they even have small fans that they bring to your table to help keep away flies. I love the beauty and British Charm that this place possesses, serving its clientele on China and the mid-century window and wall treatments are beautiful. I enjoyed the Deconstructed Vegan Pot Pie, which was extremely tasty with a large biscuit on top of a mixture of mushroom, potato, carrot, edamame, cashew cream and oat milk in a lovely sauce. It was very filling. My dinner companion enjoyed her Pennyroyal Salad, which was a huge serving of greens topped with a dressing infused with mango. We also had the mushroom pate on grilled bread that I highly recommend. My only disappointment was that two of their dark beers on tap listed on the menu were unavailable. All three were delicious but the biscuits and gravy was my personal favorite. We got a nice table by the window during prime time on Sunday night without a reservation. Lily was a sweet and attentive server. Everyone that worked there was super awesome and welcoming. Our server provided great recommendations. I got the potted chicken liver mouse. It was delicious and served with amazing crunchy warm bread. I got the royal burger without mayor or pickles. Popped into this spot for a random brunch and it was aiight with me. When we initially reserved our table, the hostess said it was for outside but gracefully gave us a spot inside, which was highly appreciated. We came here for Sunday brunch on the way to the arboretum. We were able to make a reservation the day before, and the metered parking is free on Sundays so no troubles there. The space is cute and well laid out, we had a table in the main dining room in the back. They were kind enough to let us have a slightly larger booth to accommodate my booted foot; the central 4 person tables are quite small and my boot would have been difficult to place underneath. For food, across our group we had the deviled eggs, cheeseburger with salad, monte cristo brisket with fries, fish sandwich with fries and chicken sandwich with chips. Of those, I sampled all but the last two. The biggest winners were the deviled eggs and the cheeseburger. The deviled eggs were made perfectly, presented beautifully and had a sriracha like chile sauce on top so had a little kick. The cheeseburger was perfectly cooked and seasoned, it comes in three sizes (basically, additional patties) and honestly the 6oz is single patty is plenty big enough. I ordered the double because I gave half to my husband, in exchange for 1/4 of his monte cristo. Honestly, neither of us were really keen on the monte cristo, mainly because it wasn't anything like a monte cristo. It was a couple pieces of mediocre french toast with some reasonably smoky brisket inside. If there was jam it wasn't on my piece at all. Probably not quite as artery blocking as a real monte cristo, but it was definitely lacking what was expected from the dish. I had ordered my side salad with the turmeric dressing on the side...which I got... but I think they either still added viniagrette to it first or they wash their greens in vinegar because my salad tasted vinegary. I didn't finish it, because I hate vinegar. The turmeric dressing is actually quite lovely on its own and not vinegary at all, but it couldn't disguise the vinegar. It's a shame, because the greens were quite fresh. The fries (which they call "western fries", a term that meant nothing to anyone at the table) are more like home fries - large chunks of potato. They were fine, but I think I'd prefer the homemade potato chips which looked delicious (but weren't my husbands, so I didn't grab one!) Service was very good, those who ordered coffee said it was very good. No one had cocktails. COVID-19: This restaurant requires proof of vaccination. No biggie for me and my guests: Between our actual cards or showing a picture on our phone that matches our ID, all is good! Provides a little bit more comfort while dining. Atmosphere: It gives you "DC vibes"...but in Mount Rainier! Cute décor that gives you "comfortable" and "rustic chic". Food: Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, off their happy hour menu was bad, and we ordered just about everything! The fried green tomatoes were my favorite because, let's be honest, how many places offer it?! The wings were great (fried with enough crisp on the outside). I'm a blue cheese dressing fan, though their homemade ranch was surprisingly good! The deviled eggs have a hint of crab in them, which is a great addition, though the chili relish is the real winner! The Mac & Cheese, though more Hamburger Helper-ish so the name can be a bit deceiving, was actually good and all of us thoroughly enjoyed it. Drinks: Everyone in my party (except me) had the Pink Mule. Between 3 of them, 16 were ordered! I had the Gabarda Tempranillo: A nice, slightly sweet Spanish red wine that I wasn't mad at. Although I think I got there at the tail end of brunch. My server was great! We chopped it up a little bit. She gave me the 4-1-1 on the restaurant buildings history but I don't remember, some time has passed. Visited in May 2023. I found this place based on a Yelp review. It looked cool and interesting. We shared four appetizers: fried green tomatoes (good), deviled eggs (good), buns with bacon jam (ok), and the rabbit biscuits (great). Loved the rabbit biscuits the most. I got full from the appetizers and my husband got the rockfish with hummus, another friend got the Hamburger. I must say the Hamburger looked great. My husband and got the pecan pie and our friends shared the Adult Root beer float. I tried the float and it is strong. Definitely a place to go with friends when you want a relaxed atmosphere with good food. I also loved the pink flamingo drink with the cute flamingo. read more

I recently visited here during the Winter Restaurant Week. This place is very cute but with low lighting. The service was good and we were seated promptly. Our server was attentive, and gave great recommendations. The only con was that we waiting about 45 minutes between the first and second courses and I wished it was timed closer together. Overall the food was very good. We had the confit chicken wings and the brisket and bone marrow Mac and cheese for appetizers. The chicken wings were spicy and falling off the bone just how I like them! The Mac and cheese was very rich but had a good flavor. I did wish it was more cheesy. I found myself looking for the cheese many times. For the entrees we had the chicken and andouille sausage gumbo and the 12oz penny's royal burger with western fries. The gumbo wasn't really a traditional gumbo that you would get in Louisiana. It was a very flavorful dish, but it was a little on the thick side. We saw the chicken in it but it was missing the sausage and shrimp. Good dish but I wouldn't call it a gumbo. That burger was amazing. So delicious and juicy and huge! I could've done with the 6 oz option but glad I had leftovers for the next day. For dessert we had the hand apple pies and the chocolate terrine. The terrine had the perfect balance of sweet and salty. The sprinkle of sea salt really made this dessert pop. Those hand pies were some of the best I've had. They tasted like an apple funnel. So good! Overall I would go back and try some additional dishes. read more

I live less than a mile from Pennyroyal Station in Brentwood, so I've stopped by to dine in or pick up food many times. On one hand, it says a lot about the restaurant that my first negative experience occurred after a year of pretty regular visits. On the other hand, I am incredibly reasonable when it comes to the food industry as a service worker myself, so I was pretty disappointed with my experience. I decided to treat myself to happy hour at Pennyroyal Station on Thursday, June 27, 2024. I made a reservation about 10 minutes beforehand to be safe. When I arrived, it appeared that I was the first customer (there may have been people sitting in the back room, but there was no one inside near the bar area or on the patio). I opted to sit on the patio. I ordered the Pink Flamingo (my go-to) and it was really good per usual! I knew it wouldn't stay frozen with the 90+ degree temperatures, but even as it began to melt it was a great cocktail! I also ordered the confit chicken wings from the "Snacks" portion of the dinner menu. The wings were presented well when they arrived. However, when I bit into the first wing, the temperature was inconsistent. My guess is that the wings were prepared fresh and then tossed in a sauce that was cool or cold - certainly not hot. I notified my server and asked if it would be possible for the wings to be reheated. The server was kind enough to ask the kitchen, who informed her that it was against their protocol to accept food back into the kitchen after it had been served. I was disappointed, but I understood. I told the server that I would take the check and have the wings at home instead. After paying, I asked the server if it would be possible to have a small plastic cup of the hot sauce that was on the wings. She came back and told me that she could not give me a side of the sauce because it was only used for tossing the wings. I still am not sure how difficult it could have been to pour a bit in into the same plastic cup that was used to let me take the ramp ranch to go. I now had to reheat all of the wings at home which of course causes the sauce to absorb into the wings, without any of the sauce that the wings were prepared with to toss them in afterwards. The taste of the wings that I had at the restaurant was really good, but sadly I could not recreate the intended preparation at home. I was mostly upset because the issue was not acknowledged despite what feels like such an easy, low-cost way for the restaurant to have remedied the issue, especially when it was not very busy. read more

My spouse and I had a meal here today and it was fantastic. The last we had been was years ago (probably around when they first opened) and they were good then as well, so I decided I should write a review. My spouse had the deconstructed pot pie, a vegan take on the dish, and he felt that the seasonings were excellent, every ingredient was necessary, and it was overall a well crafted dish. i had the pappardelle with rabbit (had never had rabbit before!) and it was delicious, kind of like a lamb ragu. The pasta was al dente, generally a good dish though I prob like my pasta just past al dente. The cocktail I had was a fall themed drink, bourbon and apple jack was in it, delicious! We had the apple hand pies with caramel and Cinnamon Toast Crunch ice cream for dessert and it was wonderful. I thought the ice cream might have cereal thrown in there (thankful it didn't) it was smooth, creamy, and cinnamon-y. Overall, the meal felt like the chef had been really thoughtful about each choice. Excellent meal. My spouse says it's the best he's had in DC in awhile. We'll definitely have to come back soon! read more

A neighborhood gem describes this restaurant. Sit in the front room with the bar and chairs and have a view of everyone coming in the door in a big airy space. Or you can decide to sit in the back to have a more intimate experience. All of the food was excellent! The brisket platter was very plentiful for the price. Everything was perfectly seasoned. The service was very attentive and I didn't have any complaints there. I will be back to take advantage of their plentiful outdoor seating and to sample a few of their drinks. read more
