We love Penzey's spices. That is really all there is to say about the fantastic spices that they have. Their simple spices to the complex varieties are worth every penny. Unfortunately, this is the only location in Michigan and we do drive about 50 minutes just to get there. This is the best and I recommend their spices to everyone. Going to Penzeys is a real treat. The store is laid out very invitingly, and superbly organized, so that the shopper is invited to browse the entire collection. There are spices and blends there I'd wager none of us who used to shop supermarkets had ever experienced, and they are all fresh and high quality. Pansies is a chain of spice stores with their headquarters in Wauwatosa Wisconsin. They have a thriving mail order division but there's nothing like going into the store and being able to smell the spices for yourself. Staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. There are always sales going on and we got an awesome deal on some chopped onion and onion. There are multiple herb or spice blends as well as your straight up spices such as parsley time time and oregano. I do believe they have the best curry. I prefer the sweet curry but there's also a curry now that is slightly different but still very excellent. They also have a hot curry for those of you who enjoy that sort of heat. read more

Not sure why I haven't reviewed this place yet since I'm a customer for years now. You can't get better spices than here. I especially love their cinnamon variety, usually store bought cinnamon is the cheapest one and not a healthy, where here you have so many options. I love their Vietnamese one and their own mix also. I tried many of their different spices and spice mixes and there are few that are staple at my house: toasted onions, Greek, Turkish, Fox Point and more. You pay more than store bought but considering the quality and so many different promotions and free items that you get off you are part of their mailing list, it's well worth. They do offer now online ordering with easy curbside pickup and their staff is always extremely friendly. read more

I finally went and shopped in the store, after I was gifted a 4 jar sampler, and I was quite impressed with the size of the business. There were so many spices, divided into categories to help you find what you're looking for: grilling, baking, natural salts, herbs, Indian, Mexican, Mediterranean, dressings/ marinades, seafood, chicken, etc. Another fantastic thing is they have "sniffing" jars for you to smell the spices to help you determine if it's what you're looking for. There were jars of extracts in the baking area, a lot of variety. The layout would be mobility accessible for most areas, and the staff were all so helpful and eager to assist you as needed. I had purchased 4 items and received a gift of a free bottle of dried minced garlic! In addition to the spices, there were other gift ideas: build your own box to give, kitchen hand towels and more. Prices were moderate level, but worth it for the high quality ingredients that are in the spices and blends, which many are salt free. Ordered for the first time, we were looking for a ranch dressing mix without MSG. Penney's buttermilk ranch was exactly what we were looking for. We liked it so much, I have re ordered 6 cups of the mix. We use it almost every night. I had never been here before, but their offer of a free $34.95 gift set tempted me in yesterday - a friend had told me about the offer. (if you sign up for their email list today, 4/15/18, you can get it too) I showed up around 415pm but they were out of the boxes already - there was a sign on the door that said you can get a raincheck to come back within the next 45 days, which was nice of them. I waited about 15-20 minutes in line to get my raincheck and while I was doing that I got to see their spices selection, which looks nice albeit a little pricey. The employees at the register were very nice as well, and I will definitely be back within 45 days for my spice box. read more

You guys, Penzey's is back and taking orders for pickup! So, all my chef friends recommended Penzey's Spices several years back. I thought they were only a mail order but nope, they've got several in-person stores and we've got one out in Beverly Hills. When you can visit the store in person you'll see that it is set up with a sort of "Farmer's Market" type feel with burlap sack backgrounds and wooden crates for display. They have any spice you can probably think of, with some in different formulations or different kinds. For example, there are several different kinds of cinnamon with different levels of spiciness and development of flavor. Each spice is described on a little notecard and staff are readily available for any questions or suggestions you might have. They also have several of their own mixes of spices, whether it's their own mix of Penzey's curry or a special Foxtrot seasoning. I always find everything to be very fresh and I usually don't have to use as much as the recipe calls for (unless I really love the flavor I'm working with, then I use the full amount). You can sign up for their emails, which include coupons or discounts. This is also how I found out that they were doing curbside pickup, which was very easy. I filled out an information sheet (basic info such as name and phone number) and sent it in. Within less than 30 mins I received a call and placed my order. I did think the spices themselves were a little dulled when received like they had been sitting for a bit. Then I dug deeper into their website when I was looking back for contact info and more information on where or how they obtain their spices and was very disappointed. Wish I had never purchased from a company promoting such division and hatred into this world. Wreaking of conspiracy and unverified lies to make people hate one another more instead of trying to unite "through spice". I was going to give them another chance and let them know about my issues but at this point I'll chalk it up to money wasted. I love this place and I'm not even a great cook. I love the huge assortment of spices, the catalog that explains all the interesting ways to use the spices, the plentiful freebie offers, and, most of all, the owner's willingness to take a stand and speak up on politics. It was awesome that Penzey's gave out pins to everyone who participated in the Women's March and that they've gone on supporting important topics ever since. And recently they gave out these free boxes with three jars of spice and a pin for free! What's not to love? Also, the staff are always as nice as can be, even if you're just picking up a freebie. Once they even gave me the freebie that comes with a $5 purchase even though my purchase was $4.95. Not many places will round up like that. Tip - follow their Facebook page. I love Penzeys. I admit, I buy most of my spices from the grocery store, but honestly, their prices aren't that much more. They all come in various-sized reusable glass jars. A unique spice they carry that I love on tilapia or sprinkled over rice is their Mural of Flavor. It has dried shallots, onion, garlic, chives and lemon and orange peel. A small jar is about $3, but last a long time. The bottle of almond extract I bought at the Penzeys back home was cheaper than Whole Foods. High quality spices are what you'll get. It's fun too, to peruse the store. The place is spacious and you can sniff almost all they have to offer from the jars on display. Looking for small portions of spices? Large bags of spices? Look no further, Penzey's has you covered. They have some non-mainstream spices too. Don't expect to find everything you'd see at an Indian, Arabic, or Hispanic store, but that is quite alright. There is a wide variety and chances are that they have what you're looking for. The prices are reasonable and the spices I bought were fresh. I recently bought cinnamon sticks elsewhere, only to open the container to find them old with little to no flavor. Penzey's were robust, full of fragrance, full of flavor. I bought about 15 different spices this day, and each one has been great. The store is clean, bright, so well organized. I emphasize clean, again! The staff were all so friendly and offered assistance a few times, but let me wander and select at my own pace. Nope, it is not close to my home. Who knew that a business could have a useful email distribution. I have tried the recipes in the emails, but never went to the store or shopped online. After years of magazines and emails I took the plunge. I ordered spices online and figured I'd go in store for more (skip the shipping). I had an email coupon for 3 free spices with a $5 purchase. Yes FREE! Usually it requires a $5 purchase or they have some times when you don't have to make a purchase. White pepper. California minced garlic. Adobo pepper. Mural of Flavor. What do these have in common? Spices available at Penzeys Spices. The scent of a hundred spices hits you when you enter the small store. There are shelves and shelves of spices from savory to sweet. I had to walk the store twice just to check them all out. What I love is the ability to use your sense of smell. Each area has a jar of the spice available to small or check out how it looks. I am not a daredevil, so I don't taste the spice. But, I found a pretty decent selection of salt free spices that I have added to my collection. I like that they offer the email coupon because it's a chance to try a new spice for free. Pricing is reasonable and they offer a variety of jar sizes for spice. I stop in now whenever I am in the area. This place is for you if you are always in a Rachel Ray magazine or watching the Food Network thinking of trying a new recipe because they have a spice for everything. read more

I visited this store over the weekend. Although the store layout is great and the spices are fantastic, I have an issue with the company. If you go on the website there is a section called "About Republicans". It's lengthy page bashing what they call "Misguided" Republicans". The company is basically pushing their political agenda on their site. After purchasing a few items, I noticed they threw a bunch of stickers and a free coffee mug in the bag. The stickers said "vote 2024". Not sure what their WOKE political beliefs have to do with spices but I am extremely offended. I don't identify with any party in particular but consider myself conservative. I recommend checking out their website before purchasing any of their products and decide for yourself. I know I will not be buying from there again and will tell everyone I know about it. All the stickers and free mug I received have a nice new home in my trash bin. Much like Kate H., I look forward to a trip to Penzey's (almost as much as Holiday Market). I get their catalog which seems to arrive every month or two and almost always has a coupon for something free (a new spice blend perhaps) that'll bring you into the store. Mind you, I always go to Penzey's with some staples in mind as their spices are the best I've found, so free gift or not, eventually I'll head their to restock the rack. That said, I'd recommend signing up for their mailing list when you stop in. Their extracts are fantastic (double vanilla, single vanilla, orange, lemon, etc.) and the spices around the store are all available and ready for you sniff out what you really like. The Chili 9000 is very good while not a typical chili powder ( I like it on garlic bread) and their selection of whole dried chilis is vast...so much so that I make my own chili powder from scratch now rather than buying it. As mentioned, their bulk spice is super cheap for the amount you get (well under your local grocer's prices for the volume) and they also carry empty jars for individualizing spices as gifts or for your own cabinets. I'm a big fan of their Cinnamon's (they have several kinds), their sea salts and the staples (dill weed, high fat cocoa, cayenne, etc.). The staff is always helpful and friendly and they aren't ever hovering which is nice. The store is clean and meticulously organized while setup for you to browse so take your time finding new aromas to enjoy. read more

I drooled over their catalog for years, just not wanting to pay S/H for what I thought was already-too-expensive spices. But now that I live a few miles away from a store, I'm all too willing to drop a wad of cash for the most delicious spices! On a regular basis. Go figure. Everything is just SO much more tempting when you are able to see and smell the spices in person. Every spice has a sample jar that you can open. (Beware--don't shake the jar before you open and smell, otherwise you will be sneezing within minutes. Trust me on this.) The most intriguing thing is all the spices you have never heard of! Of course there are all the regulars, too, but oh...the selection. And not just spices, but everything from mint hot chocolate to cookbooks. The staff is nice and helpful--and won't give you the evil eye when you sheepishly take up a jar (or two) that you accidentally opened out of habit and broke the seal. The Michigan climate doesn't support fresh herbs and spices year round, as dismal attempts to turn saffron fields in Flint into a billion dollar industry attest. Penzey's steps in to offer chefs, foodies, and starving people like myself the opportunity to make tasty meals without a culinary degree. I look forward to entering into the vast, wooden pantry of the shop almost as much as I do seeing movies at the Redford Theatre. The cozy atmosphere is welcoming rather than intimidating, rather like having your mom take you through the steps of making a recipe. Wooden crates tipped over and stacked up like shelves lend a bit of a rustic ambiance I associate with home cooking, Wisconsin (or the Okanagan), and Grandma about to bring something out from the oven. Walking in here is really like coming home, kind of. The open floor plan is divided into sensible sections like "Peppers," and "Seasonings," "Salad Dressings" (you just add oil, water, vinegar or your secret stash of moonshine) and "Baking." Wandering around envelopes customers in a fragrant cloud wafting up from each section, allowing an olfactory experience equal to sight and touch. Jars are placed with each spice or herb or mix so you can smell (and presumably taste if you really wanted to). Penzey's excels in providing healthy options and variety. No less than four types of cinnamon and ten peppers are available, not to mention the rainbow of salts (pink you might know, but how about French grey?). Many of their combinations are specifically salt free as we tend to get far too much of that seasoning in our diet. Mural of Flavour is one popular choice, and they list out the salt-free versions in their outstanding catalog. More on that later. Another strong suit of the store is its blended spice section. Combinations are thrown together in more ways than you can shake a stick at, ranging from favourites like bonne herbs and herbs de Provence to fire-cracker Chili 3000 and grilling combos. No matter whether you bake or fry, turn to a grill or a fire pit laced in pine cones, there's something here to suit your tastes. Even better, the labels all have suggestions on pairings and uses. I am a sucker for the Krakow Nights, which I had no idea of how to pair until I started shaking it on just about everything. The Pasta Sprinkle, Parisian Herbs, and Tuscan Sunset are my standbys for almost everything I make. I'd prefer to have their cocoa, cinnamon sugar or Raspberry Enlightenment in everything, but a girl has to watch her waistline. Really, this store has made me a better cook. I checked it out recently for the first time and it is a freaking spice utopia!!! Nearly any spice you can imagine, sold in varying quantities, with description/ingredient listings for each as well as RECIPES! This place is uber-inspiring. Wandering around in there and sniffing the contents of jars I found myself wanting to cook cook cook cook cook. So far have bought 5 different spices from Penzeys and I don't plan on buying spices from the supermarket ever again. Not only do the the selection and quality rival anything I've found at the market... but the prices are very competitive as well. I am an avid cook. So, I get my spices from Penzy's. They have easily over 200 different spices to choose from. I cannot find any other place that carries 7+ kinds of peppercorns! I also had no idea there is more than one kind or curry powder! Fascinating! These spices come from all over the world! Each spice is displayed in a jar for an aromatic taste and have a short, yet helpful description of each! The packaging is unified throughout, therefore, easy to stack and gives your pantry a clean look. (sorry if that sounds too domestic) I appreciate order in my kitchen! I've been a Penzey's customer for years and there is no arguing the quality of their products. Recently the brand simultaneously overhauled their packaging sizes and imposed a price increase. In many cases this resulted in a per ounce price increase of over 50%! I refuse to get shafted by such mercenary pricing tactics and you should too! The Spice House has thus far retained their much fairer pricing scheme. (And, oddly enough, The Spice House is also owned by members of the Penzey family.) Since Detroit has such a global influence I wonder if quality spices could be found much cheaper elsewhere in the Metro area? read more

I've passed Penzey Spices many times and never thought much of it. For some reason, I imagined it to be similar to a bulk food store. Maybe that was due to my lack of cooking experience and knowledge of spices. It wasn't until I came across the reviews here on Yelp that I became curious. How could a spice store be so amazing? Well, Penzey Spices IS amazing! I never thought I'd get excited to go to a spice store but I do. I could spend hours there. I love smelling the jars. As already stated, there are suggestions and recipes for each spice. My favorite blend is Mural of Flavors. It tastes great on meats, fish, eggs and veggies. It's also salt-free! The chip & dip mix is also delicious and addicting. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They will be happy to give suggestions and answer any questions. I also love the catalog. It lists all of the spices with details, uses and recipes. It's a great resource for someone like me who is learning about spices and trying to cook healthier meals. This place is the Disneyland of spices. They have spices you didn't even know you needed and maybe didn't know existed. Multiple varieties of cinnamon alone. I counted 8 varieties of curry blends. Rubs and spice blends for all sorts of meats. Making sausage? They've got your spices, already blended and in a jar. Besides spices, they've got all kinds of dried herbs.
