I wish I could say I'm surprised, but I am not. Peoples gas has done it again, their terrible attempt at a business model is laughable at this point. After already having issues with them in the middle of the winter (my previous review), I thought things couldn't get worse when interacting with this company. My friends and I have moved to a new apartment and made sure we were ahead of the game when setting up utilities. Our first priority was Peoples Gas, knowing how terrible set up would be. After being assured that we had done everything right (which we had), we moved in to find no hot water, no stove gas and no heat for the dryer. How did this happen you may ask? Well, Peoples Gas assigned our names to a different unit THEY ALREADY HAVE AN ACCOUNT FOR WITH THE CURRENT TENANTS. They then said that we would have to schedule an appointment for August 11th and that there was nothing else they could do. After a good deal of explaining how that simply would not work, they sent out two technicians who had been given the account number for that same incorrect unit, where they then said *TWICE* that they couldn't turn our meter on until we get Peoples Gas to send them the correct information. You can't make up how poorly this business operates; no help, long misleading hold times paired with a lack of empathy or a smidge of compassion for people who pay their salaries. They will be getting hit with yet another ICC claim because this is just beyond acceptable. read more

If you have a choice between People's Gas and another company, no matter how much the other alternative is, go with the other alternative. Do not use People's Gas. Worse customer service experience I have ever had. Truly deserves 0 stars. I have spent three months trying to start my services. I have contacted People's Gas about a dozen times through email and phone. Some issues: First, getting a hold of them is impossible. When you call you are left on hold forever. I was once left on hold for an hour, and then hung up on because the agent did not know the answer to my question. I have also been told I would get a call back from a team lead, only to never recieve a call back. I once told an agent over email about the team lead never calling back and they said I had to wait 24-48 hours. When I told them it had been two weeks, they quickly dropped the subject. Second, no one knows what the hell is going on. I have been told conflicting information more times than I can count. All of their agents are on different pages than one another. You cannot get them to tell you one straight answer that another agent doesn't directly contradict with. Third, just straight up unhelpful. They are unwilling to do anything to improve their customer service experience. When I have complained about these things, they have just said I can call them with issues. No one there care. They clearly are not concerned about making their services better because they have monopolized natural gas delivery. Surprising to me that local politicians do not regulate them more. read more

These a-holes pulled up at 8pm on Friday night with a huge trailer and a tractor and started jackhammering. They were still making a ton of noise after midnight. They left all their equipment scattered outside overnight, including a hat, gloves, a fire extinguisher on the sidewalk and their truck's back door wide open. Then some other a-holes were out there at 4:30am moving the equipment around and talking at the top of their lungs like completely thoughtless dicks. They took up half a block of parking all day, and left a huge metal plate over the hole like assholes so it vibrates the whole block every time someone runs over it. Fuck you Peoples Gas. TLDR: They tried to charge me an extra $150 because their payment portal doesn't work. Payment portal is terrible, on their website and app. My first payment went through without issue, from then on all of my payments have been rejected for no discernible reason. They told me to call my bank, my bank told me it's on the gas company. I don't mind tech issues once in a while, but this has been going on every month since August, and they've been trying to charge me $25 for each transaction THEY were unable to accept. I had to fight an extra $150 and ended up getting a smarmy phone call from a manager explaining they will not refund these charges any more. If you can avoid this place, do it. Normally I would toss mail like this - it appears as junk mail - but I opened it anyway. It was a notice stating I had ten days to set up an account or cooking gas service would be suspended. I've never paid for gas through them, never have EVER had an account, and the kicker? I've been in this apartment for a year and two months. I contacted them by email and tried to be friendly, but it quickly devolved into roundabout statements and fumbling canned answers, and when I finally tried to request the total bill of what I owed, they told me that can't do that without an established account. Then why am I beholden to a bill that isn't in my name to begin with, never was, and shouldn't be? If there's no established account, then why am I being asked to pay a bill like there is one? No one ever contacted me and I've been using gas for a year with no issues. I asked them to pass my emails to a supervisor and was told I could only do that if I called. I told them I would be happy to set up an account for future bills, but if the bill was egregious for the last year and no one contacted me, I would be escalating my case. They insisted I must call, I insisted they were capable of passing on my emails. I'm EXTREMELY displeased. This is ridiculous. We've never spoken, I've never been a customer, and according to People's Gas, service from the previous tenant wasn't shut off for a YEAR? So why am I suddenly responsible for it? Not even sure what the point of writing a review is because I don't think they read nor particularly care about what reviews they have written about them. They turned off my gas after sending me a letter stating that my gas would be turned off, The letter was sent to the address above me, so of course I ignored it because I thought that it was for my neighbors in the 1st floor ( where as I live in the basement) lo and behold, these fuckers turned off ALL OUR GAS. I am currently writing this sitting in my room with 2 electric heaters, and my electric blanket at level 15, because without this I would be the coldest motherfucker in this 16 degree weather. They turned off our gas 2 days ago, and I was able to fax them our lease with the required documentation yesterday, I called this morning to set up a service appt, and they said that even though my neighbors upstairs apparently have an appt, to set up the gas tmr morning, they can't turn on my gas because it is on a case to case basis. wtf does that even mean, we all faxed our leases at the same time, so I am not sure what a case to case basis even means, considering that in order to turn on our gas, they have to turn on ALL our gas. Plus, since my stove uses gas I haven't had any normal food for 3 days, I have been surviving off carrots and greek yogurt, the new no gas diet, great for anyone whom unintentionally is trying to live off raw food. Our water heater also uses gas, so I haven't taken a shower in 3 days as well, not that I have had any chance to sweat or anything since my room is 45 degrees and dropping. I have called multiple times to multiple different people to try and see how I can get this situation resolved, but no one seems to be able to help until I have my information processed. I recently bought a 2nd home and was told that my bills for the 2 places could be combined into one on my online account. So I've been paying my bill and today with no call, email (i do paperless) or knock on the door, they shut off my gas. Apparently my online account had 2 different accounts within it and I was paying the bill for my new 4,000 sq ft house but not my one bedroom apartment. Paying bill like 5x the price of my smaller place but they cut gas with a 13 year history of never ever missing a payment. Just got back from a run not thinking and boom I got to enjoy a nice ice cold shower over $116 when I recently paid a $460 bill for my other pad. If they knock on my door when they put notice on my Fing door, I'd have paid. Now I guess I'm going to be taking cold showers for the near future until they can get my gas back on which will of course cost more than $116 owed and surely they'll take their time from what I've read. They shut off my gas today at my business. I was put on a payment plan (split into 3 payments). My most recent payment of posted on 11/23. The building manager called to advise that People's Gas was there to shut off the meter, I instantly called customer service to situate. I also pleaded with the shut-off people to hold off on turning it off because I did make a payment that posted, and was on a payment plan. They didn't give a shit, they shut it off anyways. Earliest reconnection is 7 days from today. They aren't turning off residential properties, so what's the hold up?? Giving 1 star because I cannot give 0. After noticing some irregularities with my monthly gas bill, I called People's Gas today for clarification. I've had a "budget billing" arrangement for years. This evened out the monthly gas charges so I didn't have to cover the big winter cost spikes. Something happened in August whereby I was paying gas charges on top of the budget amount - in essence paying for the gas twice. I also found new gas storage charges appearing with the delivery charges. These two storage charges were based on a therm count that was nearly 20 times my actual usage. When asked about those charges, the first customer service agent said they came from the gas supplier and I needed to speak to them. A call to the gas supplier refuted that claim and directed me back to Peoples Gas. The second Peoples Gas agent said these were authorized charges that couldn't be disputed. After being transferred to a supervisor, I asked the same question. He could not explain why the storage charges were based on therms 20 times greater than my actual usage. Long story short, - I've dropped budget billing, - I'm getting a credit for the inflated storage charges, & - I'm checking my gas bill every month until they get their billing algorithms fixed. tl;dr customer service agent LAUGHED AT ME WHEN I EXPLAINED MY ISSUE. I called to try and turn my service off after attempting to contact People's Gas for ten days and the customer service agent LAUGHED AT ME and refused to answer my questions about why my gas bill was high when I have not lived in the apartment the account is for a month. Horrible service. Takes forever to get to a rep. Scheduled a turn on. They couldn't come out for several days, and they give you several hour window. I am at location, and it so happens that I am in bathroom when the tech rings the door bell. Within 2 mins, I go out and I see the van leaving. When I called the main number, nothing they cud do except reschedule another appointment 5 days later. This time I make sure I peak out the window every few mins. I accidentally submitted a payment twice, and as soon as it posted, i called them right away to get a refund check. I waited and waited for it, only to call back and find out someone had already cashed it. Now what I don't get is how someone can cash a check without my signature or identification? Four times now I have had issues that went unresolved (mostly because of the faulty auto-pay system). This company is absolutely horrendous. The people on the phone are nice, but the way the company is run is just plain awful. Their automated system is convoluted as hell. Why on earth do you have to pay extra to make an instant payment?? You have to be very careful about working with these people and document everything when making business with them. Story making and dishonesty and they are the monopol so they just fine you in the way they want for their own mistakes. On 4/4 I was called by peoples gas area service manager named Wayne from the number 312-240-7277, to schedule a service to activate my gas, unlock the meter, and a safety inspection. I informed Wayne that there is currently no lock on my meter and it was on. Wayne replied that this is serious and needs to be investigated because in their records the meter was supposed to be locked. ON 4/5 around 12-1pm a guy from peoples gas came to my property, he removed my gas meter and they said I have to pay fine. After this incident I had another phone call with Wayne (supervisor) he claimed his inspector came out, and found fresh scratches on the meter.Seriously? I can understand if someone tries to cover up for their employee but creating bs like this is simply illogical! These meters are 20 yrs old and there is nothing but rust and dust on them with thousands scratches. So one technician that is super capable of creating a story like this? This so called inspector did not even care to pick up the lock piece left on the ground from previous employee which is hilarious! According his account there has been gas use about 100 cubes which totally proves my point that the meter was never locked! I am very frustrated and try to understand what is going on here? I am the one who called service manager to inform that the gas is on and there is no lock on it, the next day people gas is coming and trying to fine me over something I report? I'll call and be told by one representative that a tech will be by today, and then it's a half hour past the time they said they'd be here, and I have to call and wait on hold for the next representative who then says there's no sign that I spoke to someone else about my appointment today. I already waited on the phone last Tuesday when they actually turned off my heat for FIVE HOURS, in order to get an appointment for Thursday a week later, which is already outrageous. I remembered once off the phone that this is illegal to do with families that have small children, which I do, and I called and let them know that I haven't been able to provide heat, or bathe or feed my children homemade meals, and have had to spend additional $ on feeding them prepared food. I was told my services would be expedited with this new information in mind, and was then told by a different representative when I called because it's been a half hour since they were supposed to be here that this was not true. I am crying while I type this, because I can't believe I've been forced to run around like this. How can these people live with themselves. UPDATE: received a voicemail from a woman who said there is no record at all of all of the times I was told that someone would be out today between 8 and 12. This company is just liars and lip service. I am on the phone now with Jose ID# C140965 to understand why no one is taking notes on all of our calls from the last week, just to understand exactly what is going on when I call about things as serious as turning my heat on in my basement apartment in the fall after I've informed these people that I have children. This is absolutely unacceptable, and if I don't receive concrete answers, I will have to peruse further more serious action. Our service was turned off without any notification. We did not receive any calls, emails, letters, etc. before service was cut off. After sitting on hold for hours multiple times with customer service, we were told a manager would call us. We did not have any unpaid bills, our account was current. We have email confirmations that all bills were paid. Customer service could not give us an answer as to why our service was terminated. On Tuesday we asked that service be turned back on, and were told it would be a week before that could happen. A week without hot water or heat during cold weather is not right, especially when we have paid our bills and there was no reason for termination of service. We were told that a request would be put in to expedite. Later that evening we called and were told that request was denied. We requested a manager then, and they said nobody was available and we would receive a call from one. 48 hours later, no call from a manager. We have a 2 year old who is shivering being bathed in cold water, we have had to spend money eating out as we cannot cook our food. We have had to purchase space heaters because we have no heat which are expensive not only to buy but also to operate. A manager finally called after nearly 3 days of trying to get a hold of one and we were told we have to continue to wait until Tuesday 11/16 for our service to be turned on. We were also told that there was a mistake and we were paying bills for the wrong address for 3 months! The bills we received, which we have copies of have the correct address. How does People's gas treat their customers like this??? Paying customers with no outstanding balance!!! How can you shut someone's gas off with absolutely no forms of notice due to your own mistakes and refuse to resolve the problem in a timely manner??? During this time, we continue to have to bathe a two year old child shivering in cold water! We have to pay to operate expensive electric space heaters! Have to order food out for a week or eat 3 cold meals a day! I have very little hope after dealing with customer service over the phone that anyone at People's gas will take this seriously. It is very obvious that customer service is not a priority at your company and it saddens me that others who may be in worse situations and may not be able to afford a hot meal or to purchase space heaters are subject to the wrongdoings of People's gas as well. It saddens me that myself and other Chicagoans are subject to your monopoly on the natural gas utility and cannot turn to a company that acts in a timely manner to resolve the problems they are at fault for. This is not going to be a kind review. Peoples Gas has effectively taken thousands of dollars from me, and not only will I be changing providers but I will be taking legal action. We have been overcharged the past 4-5 months and it hasn't been minor. Our gas bill has been FIVE TIMES higher than every other typical month. When we called and asked (after multiple times trying) we were told that there was an error 5 months ago and it was supposed to be addressed but never was. After they realized there was an error they mentioned that they had to estimate the usage....estimate? Their estimation was 5X the typical month? Pathetic. They're now telling us that it has all been accurate and they won't be refunding or crediting the account. Beyond stunning how incompetent and lazy the employees at all levels of Peoples Gas are. Firstly, they dug up my basement installed a meter then contacted me that the meter was malfunctioning. As a result, I have had no service due to a meter that they confessed was installed incorrectly and malfunctions. For the past three weeks I have called daily with hold times up to two hours before I give up. It appears that CUB has no effect any longer They have been unable to assist with getting my service restored. Multiple calls to corporate office have gone unreturned (Valerie). Obviously the worst. We all know it. They take forever to come out and set up the gas. The guys that came over were arguing with each other the entire time in my home. They do not let you immediately set up automatic payment, you have to be "eligible" after you pay your first bill. It's set up for people to fail pay all these fees. Honestly, whoever wants to take the gas industry over in Chicago should easily be able to. Hint hint. read more

Set up an appointment to turn on my gas - the only appointment options were "between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm". Figured it was kind of ridiculous that I would need to take the entire day off to get my gas started, but you do what you gotta do to make your apartment livable, I guess. It's past 4 pm and I'm still waiting. I understand that delays happen, but missing an 8-hour window is something incredible. I wish I could get away with that at my workplace. read more
