Oh Pepper Twins, how I love thee. This has become one of our favorite Asian restaurants in Houston and we make it a point to come here regularly. Even better that it's inside the loop and you don't have to travel all the way to Chinatown for good Szechuan food. Nestled between a Taco Cabana and Twin Peaks off of busy Kirby Dr, it's easy to miss this place if you don't know where you're going. Parking is plentiful and lately the restaurant never seems too busy inside, so I hope that they still get a lot of takeout business. I will say they run a good pop playlist, so that adds to the ambiance. Our favorites on the menu are Fried Spicy Chicken Cubes, Fish Loves Tofu, Cumin Lamb, Dry Fried String Beans, and Golden Eggplant. The Fried Spicy Chicken Cubes are always crispy with a strong flavor of Five Spice. I do like that they put a good amount of sautéed red onions in this dish, as other Szechuan restaurants that serve this usually don't have any sautéed onions in the dish. Fish Loves Tofu is similar to a mapo tofu but with filets of fish instead of minced pork. This dish comes out in a large bowl and the portion can easily feed two people. It is very saucy, which makes it good for sopping your white rice in. Cumin Lamb has plenty of lamb slices and vegetables throughout. When this hits the table, that scent of cumin, while strong, just smells so good. Dry Fried String Beans is your standard sautéed green beans, but the ones here have a very good seasoning to them that sets it apart from others. The Golden Eggplant is eggplant coated in salted duck egg yolk and deep fried to a crisp - this is just so good and I've only been able to find this at one other place in Houston. Service is always fast and attentive here. There's never a long wait for your food to come out after ordering. We do like to BYOB - corking fee is $10 per bottle. The one gripe I have here is that they don't have round tables, which makes it difficult to come with a group of 6+, as you'll be required to pass dishes back and forth down the table. We will continue to frequent Pepper Twins and make it a point to come regularly to show our support. While there are so many other dishes on the menu to try, including very authentic ones that aren't commonly made elsewhere, we tend to stick to our favorites. I came to Pepper Twins to check out my nonprofit group's reservation and tried the famous dish 九葉花椒雞 Pepper Twins Chicken. My Executive Director recommended this restaurant because of convenience to Southwest Freeway and Loop 610. For being on Kirby, that's a well known area for restaurants. I chatted with a manager about the restaurant. Prior to Covid, there were 7 restaurants and this one on Kirby is the only one left. The interior is modern and classic. There are 2 areas can be divided into party rooms. But there aren't any walls, just drapes. There are several parking lots shared with Taco Cabana. I would say this is perfect for lunch and dinner parties. The sign on the building is not quite visible from the feeder road. But the sign above the entrance facing Kirby (behind Taco Cabana rather) is quite prominent. Getting out to freeway feeder road can be challenging during rush hour because the freeway exit is few yards away. GPS direction is also challenging from Northbound on 59. Make sure you are on the 2nd from the left turning lane. After making that left turn, there is not enough room to change lane. Or, you have to drive around the block to get here. Food was phenomenal. I ordered a pot of chrysanthemum tea with the Pepper Twins Chicken. The fresh peppercorn was the highlight of the dish. The fresh serrano peppers added the spiciness to the dish. This dish has 2 pepper icons but it's not that hot. It numbs my lips at the moment but no lingering affects like mala Sichuan hot. read more

Came here about an hour before closing. We weren't greeted by anyone for a good 10 min. The place was busy but not full, and it took another 10 min to be seated. ATMOSPHERE: Clean and well-kept restaurant. The lighting is soft and the dining area is spread out enough to where it is still quiet even when busy. There is plenty of parking out front in the complex. FOOD: We got the General Tso Chicken and the Pepper Twins Chicken. The General Tso Chicken was pretty good. It was crispy, evenly coated in tangy and rich sauce, and paired well with the rice. We didn't like the Pepper Twins Chicken, on the other hand. First, be warned that Sichuan numbing spice is added to the chicken, which makes your mouth slightly numb while eating it (we weren't warned about this). Second, the flavor wasn't strong or complex, it actually tasted somewhat flavorless. I couldn't quite figure out why this was a signature dish of the location. SERVICE: It took a while for us to be greeted by anyone at the front of the restaurant, and the dining area seemed understaffed with only a few waiters/waitresses for all tables. We weren't checked in on after getting our food. PRICE/VALUE: Prices are reasonable here and you get very generous portions. One dish is probably enough to feed two people here. Overall, the service could be improved here, and the Pepper Twins Chicken was not my cup of tea. I'd give it another try if in the area, though. read more

2.5 stars. I remember coming here 3 years ago and was blown away by the golden eggplant. I haven't had it since, but have always wanted to go back to try it again. Well, today I finally had that opportunity and was sorely disappointed. The eggplant did not look or taste how I remembered. The eggplant used to be generously coated in dry salty egg yolk but today it was an oddly wet texture with little flavor. Also ordered the xiao long bao which stuck to the paper no matter how gently I tried to scoop it up. It was also doughy with minimal filling. Overall an underwhelming dining experience. Pepper Twins is a place I go to when I want something different. They put a spin on classic dishes, and the most important part is that it tastes so good. The interior is classy and refined, with prompt service, wether you're dining in or ordering takeout. The Sichuan style dishes give that extra kick without being too overpowering. Though some dishes can leave a bit of a lingering spice, and I personally cannot handle spicy food haha. I personally love the sweet and succulent general tsao's chicken and the mixed fried rice. The Singapore rice noodles were also good, though I preferred the flavor and texture of the rice. The size of the shrimp used in the rice are huge, which is a welcome change. The other big positive is the price, for a generous portion size and numerous dishes, the pricing is more than reasonable. A great place to visit and revisit! read more

My gal and I ate here recently as I was getting tests run in the Med Center. We liked the mention of healthy and organic sourcing of their food. I got the spicy shrimp dish and it was amazing! Probably the largest shrimp and largest portion I have ever seen. Everything was served hot and fresh. Wife got the spicy beef and she was not as impressed. Could have been she just wasn't in the mood for beef and said she should have gotten a chicken dish. The beef dish was lacking in that it didn't have a good variety of vegetables, mainly onions. We had steamed rice and spring rolls and those were both very good. The service was excellent and the restaurant was clean and pleasant. Overall a very nice experience. This place is a classic. We order from here every other week. The take out is on point. That being said, you can order the same dish every so often the dish will come out different. For instance, I order the eggs and tomato and sometimes there is more tomato than egg. Sometimes the mapo tofu is spicy, sometimes not. I feel like you get more when you do take out but their menu inside is more expansive. Pretty empty inside usually but the food is always fast. Even if the food can differ, it is always good. Pepper twins has been my go too off Kirby since Qin dynasty changed owners and fell off. Are used to go to Qin dynasty for about 20 years, but they really have dropped off in quality and cleanliness. So me and my girlfriend are very happy that we found pepper twins because they take quality and cleanliness pretty serious for the most part. I will admit today the table and the floors were very sticky. So Pepper twins get to it and clean those messy tables and dirty floors. Food: the lunch specials here are absolutely amazing. So far I've gotten the Mongolian beef and it has been top-notch. Actually today I tried the general sales chicken and that was equally as good. My girlfriend tried the Kung pow chicken, and the shrimp Kung pow as she shared both dishes with me. I will agree. Both of those are extremely good as well. The hot and sour soup is really good too. All dishes come served with White rice. The customer service top-notch as well. The food comes out in a timely manner, and all the waiters and waitresses here are very friendly. Lots of raving over the pepper twins I finally got to stop by here maybe I stopped at the wrong location. The food was standard, nothing over the top. General tso tofu - the sauce didn't really do anything for me it didn't drive me nuts or make my mouth water or make me want to eat more it was just a sauce it didn't have very much cake was a little bit bland and the tofu was a little bit tough so I wasn't super impressed. Walnut Shrimp - a tablet greasy for me again the sauce feel flat it wasn't sweet it wasn't sour it wasn't tangy it just was there was nothing spectacular about it the shrimp or a very nice size but overall I really wasn't super satisfied with the food. I've had much better at other places. Search for best Chinese food before you check out this place. Hi and Happy New Year! This is my first review of 2025!!! Anywho...I'm in Houston for the Houston Live Stock Rodeo. Time changes, delayed flight, etc etc. Starving by the time I walked in to this cool place with great music playing. The place is very clean and the staff is very friendly. I remembered to get 2 of 3 shots before I consumed everything. I ordered Shumai, Salty Pepper Shrimp and Shrimp Chow Mein. Everything came to the table piping hot. The Shumai were small so they were gobbled up very quickly. The other two dishes photographed wonderfully. Unfortunately, they didn't taste as good as they photographed. The food has great ingridents but the seasoning was lost. I definitely will be taking the leftovers back to my hotel to see if I can add some salt and pepper and maybe soy sauce or something. I am a little disappointed. With the crowd that's in here I would definitely recommend you come and try for yourself. They are only the fatty end pieces. Tonight, as I sat at home, thinking about food I had a taste for pepper twins a place that has never let me down in the past, I ordered the same two things that I order almost every time I go, which was there chicken soup Which was really good and their cumin lamb, which was absolutely tasteless, I couldn't taste the cumin. it was overloaded with bell peppers, and in general flavorless, I'm not sure what happened, but this was not a good meal. Our go to Chinese food spot! We normally don't eat here but perfect for dinner take out. The plates are so packed and very celiac friendly.

First off, they give you one of those red circular bins of white rice. And they fill it up most of the way. And it's free. And you can refill. That in itself, is almost worth a 5 stars. Not many places do that anymore, so it was nice to have enough rice to eat your heart out. They have ample seating, and it has a modern-Asian feel to the store. Waiters are quick, kind, and get to the point, like most Asian restaurants. Ordered the Sauteed Lamb with Cumin, and although it was slightly pricey (around 18 for 1 item), it is enough to share with 2 people! Especially since rice is unlimited haha. The dish is mostly lamb, with some onion, green onion. Not any spicy peppers that are basically inedible, which is great. The lamb was slightly crispy, with a great crunch while maintaining a juicy inside. Definitely recommend it! read more

One of the best Chinese restaurants in town. Their vegetarian options are quite a few but I have my favorites and don't mind eating the same food over and over again, it is that tasty. Service is prompt and friendly. We got the chou mein, the dry- fried beans, and vegetable spring roll. The beans comes with rice. All hot and yummy. The beans is one of their specialty items. We requested for the chou mein with no egg, or, egg on the side. They won't do the egg on the side but they did take it off. With prices on the higher range, I did not see many customers on a Friday evening, so that way its good even for a date night. read more

The restaurant itself it's cute with the lighting, which reminds me we were sitting in the back of booth on the right hand side near the restrooms and the light where we were sitting at the table was turned off also before we walked out before 9 PM. I had to use the restroom to my surprise. The lights were already turned off. I will be reporting this to The health department at this was a dangerous and scary situation to be in my kid has ADHD and autism and this was absolutely unacceptable. He was extremely happy to be there and when the light turned off, he got frightened and again we were not able to relieve ourselves after our meal Just unacceptable. It's one of our favorite cuisines and out of all the Sichuan places we visited, Pepper Twins at Kirby delivers quality dishes with remarkable consistency. An "additional" 10-minute wait time on an order placed online or over the phone is acceptable to me, but definitely not 25 minutes! Anyway, let's go over the three "Signature Dishes" that I had off of the "Specialty" menu. 1) Pepper Twins Chicken-a little spicy, tasted not bad but not impressive, which made me clueless what would make this a signature dish?! It was just bite-size chicken stir-fried with chopped red and green chili pepper and some Chinese spices...what's so big of a deal? *shrug* 2) Golden Eggplant- fried eggplant chunks coated with salty duck egg yolk, which however barely met my expectation. It was mushy and not crispy at all while the egg yolk sauce tasted pretty bland. I sure have had better eggplant with salty egg yolk somewhere else. 3) Osso Buco Pork Fore Shank- oh thank goodness! Finally this braised pork shank in reddish sweet and savory gravy made a true signature dish! The meat was not tender enough, but who cares?! I was so taken by the freshness and flavor that I could not help myself and placed an order to go- salt/ pepper tofu. I will be running back to this place. They have several locations, but the location on Kirby is the place to go. I went during the week during lunch so it was moderately crowded. The service was on point. PEPPER TWINS OFF OF KIRBY IS WAY BETTER THAN Post oak location. Nothing compared the food was good but not as good as the kirby location. I got the same plates at both location and I did not enjoy it here at post oak like I did at Kirby location. You must order the spicy chicken cubes! They are the most delicious fried chicken nuggets ever. So tender and so juicy. The water boiling fish is also a necessity. They also had a seasonal summer item, which was the pork belly buns. The serving size was small, but tasty. Pepper Twins and Mala Sichuan are my go to places for Sichuan food in Houston!
