Yumm Twister & Ice Cream - Tiramisu gelato cone

Sweet Victory at Yumm Twister & Ice Cream!…read more After an epic dinner at Pho-Mo (seriously, go there), my sweet tooth started throwing a tantrum. Lucky for me, right next door was Yumm Twister & Ice Cream, just waiting to save the day! I strolled in, had a nice little chat with the server (because ice cream decisions are serious business), and what did I land on? A milkshake. Because honestly--who doesn't crave a creamy milkshake while cruising on a Harley? Yeah, I did it. And yes, I had a drink holder... safety first, friends. My flavor of choice? Salted Caramel Pretzel. Sweet, salty, crunchy--basically a party in a cup. Do yourself a favor and order it; your taste buds will send you a thank-you card. Meanwhile, my better half went for a sophisticated gelato cone (because she's classy like that). Of course, I had a bite... and yup, it was as good as it looked. Smooth, rich, and worthy of its name. So, if you're anywhere near Gulf Shores and your sweet tooth starts whispering, head over to Yumm Twister & Ice Cream. You'll leave happy, sticky-fingered, and maybe a little addicted. And hey, if you stop in, tell them "The Harley Rider--aka 1/2-Time--sent ya." You won't score a discount, and I won't get a kickback--but at least they'll know I kept my promise and shared the scoop. Bottom line: This place is dessert heaven. Don't miss it!

Rolled up here for a dessert after a long day of conference-ing. I'd had this spot bookmarked for…read morea while and I was excited to try it. It's in a small shopping center that has lots of dining/dessert options. I only managed to make it about 45 minutes before close, so parking was easy and it wasn't busy. It smelled nice inside and looked clean. They offer a lot of different gelato desserts; the main draw I think is the twister cone, which is a baked cone that seems to be a donut-like pastry. This looked really good, but I was still too full from dinner to want anything quite that large. Service was a bit of a mixed bag. Two employees were there; one was a friendly young man who was clearly new as the other employee was teaching him how to ring up orders; the other was a surly older woman who seemed annoyed that I'd stopped in. I'm somewhat sympathetic since I did come in a little close to COB, but I don't think ~45 minutes is too unreasonable. I asked if they could make one of their signature cones in a cup instead and they agreed. I got the tiramisu variety, which is tiramisu and coffee gelato with coffee syrup and a ladyfinger. It was made in a reasonable time and I was rung up and headed out to my car to bring it back to eat at my hotel. The price was a little high but the portion was absolutely massive. You could easily split this treat. I certainly was unable to finish it. Overall, I thought it was only okay. The texture of the gelato was lovely, but the flavors were just kind of muted. I thought it should've been a bit sweeter, but not because the coffee was too strong; indeed, the coffee flavor was also just sort of light and unobtrusive. The syrup had an artificial taste that I wasn't crazy about and I was relieved when I'd eaten down past it to just spoonfuls of gelato. Lastly, the ladyfinger was sadly very stale, and even an attempt at ice cream rehydration didn't help it much. If I were to return, I'd definitely try one of the twister cones and would probably opt for a different flavor. Curiosity sated, for now!

The flavors are sharper & the milkfat is lower and it's a rather fantastic experience. Lamonte shares space in the historic Sacred Heart Hospital building and there is ample space in or out at which you can enjoy your treats. This small business has won 'Best on the Coast' awards and you can absolutely see why! Gelato is almost fluffy, it seems creamier without the cream, and the combinations can seem endless. They even have a variety that is Olive Oil & Fig, which was sampled by a member of our party and deemed fantastic. Our shared cup of Salted Caramel & Double Chocolate did not last long, and when served with a waffle cone wafer, it made for the perfect union. A small cup, in which you can mix up to two flavors, runs you $5.50, and the larger cup will run you $6.50, making it super-affordable for this artisanal approach to a wonderful delight. Lamonte even puts together a fabulous coffee/drink menu, so there is just about something for any time of day. Pro tip: try an Affogato, a delight of espresso over vanilla gelato. The staff is friendly and certainly willing to suggest something for gelato rookies, and you can see why this brand is exceptionally proud of its product.
