My go to place for pet supplies. Currently, I have been getting most all my aquarium supplies here. Its close to my home, has reasonable prices, great for beginners, great selection, and knowledgeable staff. I bought a 20 gallon aqueon packaged setup here. It had the tank, filter, heater, stand, airstone, airpump, and gravel for around 150. They gave me great advice on how to cycle my tank, water temps, and water chemistry. I got my first few mollys here! Which were then killed my some other fish I got on Clement st. *sigh... But then I got some Angelfish here too! Those guys are about a month in, healthy, growing quickly, and getting fat off brine shimps. Since Petco closed in fishermans wharf area, Pet Central is really your 1 stop shop for just about any kind of pet you have. And if you want a pet theyve got them here too! read more

My wife loves to stop here when ever we are in China Town to look at the puppies in the window. Although these puppies most likely came from a puppy mill they are still cute to look at. Pet Central has everything you need for your pet...and I mean everything! This pet store is three levels of pet supplies! There is one level devoted to fish and aquariums and the other levels has birds, reptiles, rodents, puppies, hamsters and other assortment of pets. They really do pack a lot of stuff into the building yet it doest feel cluttered or unorganized. The funny thin is that there is a Chinese video rental place inside also! read more

Pet Central has moved to a MUCH,MUCH, MUCH smaller storefront. And it's no wonder considering the prices they have for fish are so expensive, there was NO WAY they could've afforded the rent at the larger location. There are ZERO NADA ZIP ZILCH NO prices listed for the saltwater fish. $8 for a Blue Damsel? Are you out of your fucking MIND????!!!?!!! They don't have feeder fish, and I was infoes their black mollies were female guppies. No dude, I'm white, but not retarded. There's a reason they moved from their larger, more spacious location on Broadway, & it wasn't due to a "better location". Do the math. I'd sooner shop at Sixth (Sick) Avenue than shop here. Hopefully, they won't be able to handle the rent here as well because of their exuberant prices, and San Francisco will be rid of another fish store trying to gouge their customers. I have sympathy for mom and pop pet shops and they had such good reviews before they moved to their new location, but I was sorely disappointed when I checked out Pet Central at the new location. I have 2 common goldfish and wanted to get a third, maybe fancier variety. I went to look at their stock and immediately a man asked if he could help me, I told him I wanted to look at the goldfish and he proceeded to babysit me. I thought maybe he was trying to be helpful but I'm pretty sure I pissed him off when I said thank you and started to leave. In one tank I was looking at some of the fish clearly had ick. Another tank had 2 fish with fogged eyes, I don't even know what fish disease that is. No way in heck would I contaminate my healthy, nice tank with their nasty disease fish. And the fact that the guy hung over me and gave me the stink eye for not getting fish from them was not helpful either. Dare I say, Petco has better stock and service. I didn't look at anything else, but they seemed to have a good selection of supplies. Then again, I wouldn't go back for anything after that experience. read more

I love stopping and visiting the talking macaw who says hi to me and hello! The macaw also bows to me if I bow to it. So cute! I love going downstairs and staring at the fishes too. The dwarf hamsters in the back are so adorable and cheaper than the commercial pet stores. read more

I LOVE IT HERE!! Amazing place...when you walk in it makes you just want to start a giant aquarium with all the tropical fish in the world. I didn't even check out the cat/dog/reptile section because I was so overwhelmed by the fish section(s)! The man at the counter (didn't catch his name) knew everything that would make my beta the happiest beta ever - and so far so good! I'm headed back there today because A. I can't stay away B. Fish fish and more fish. This place has hells of fish. You walk in and you see shelves of bottles and bottles of aquarium products. Then to the left you see a video rental/sales counter that I half expected to be movies all about fish but weren't. In the back is a stairwell that takes you down to a dark blue cave. The mid level is filled with tanks of fish separated in aisles of fresh water fish, salt water fish and Japanese coi fish. They have a big selection of fish to sell and they even have the fish from Finding Nemo for sale!! They also sell water plants and have two tanks with a complete mini-reef with corral and various sea anemones. The bottom level holds fish tanks of all sized. The staff is very knowledgeable about fish. Definitely go here for your fishy needs! I don't know why it's called Pet Central since it only sells fish. You should stop by and visit if you're in North Beach..It's on the corner of Broadway and Columbus. read more

And this shop is HUGE! Three levels of Pet-mania. Why oh why can't they carry kitty litter with a HANDLE?? I mean, that shit's heavy and I need to carry it 2 blocks. It would be really nice if they could order some alternative means. Also, they sell purse dogs. Yorkies, little Pomeranians and anything else that could be categorized as a "toy" (Think: Agnes from "Best in Show'). This is limited to the fish section. Good selection of healthy fish at reasonable prices but almost no rare / oddball freshwater fish, just the standard selections. Haven't bought any of the following but seems like the best place to buy a large goldfish, parrot cichlid or an arowana. The only negative aspect is that fish attendant did not seem skilled in catching fish and did not honor my request to net the fish I wanted but instead grabbed some of the smaller easier to catch fish. I'm really surprised by the negative stuff being said about how they treat puppies. I got my new love, Bing Bing from Pet Central this weekend. Yeah he was pricey but what Shih Tzu isn't? The puppies were not mistreated and looked very happy and active. The area for them to play wasn't huge but the same is true for puppies in animal shelters. They had three puppies there and all were active and playful. I know the signs for puppies how are abused or from puppy mills and my Bing Bing is not showing any. This place is great and friendly. It's huge with so much to look at. One of the guys in charge of the puppies was kinda clueless but whatever. My friends bought a dwarf hamster and were able to get everything for it. I chose not to buy all my puppy supplies b/c I'm a health nut but it has good options for treats, collars and leashes. read more

This is the big mamma jamma of pet supply stores. Three levels in total including: aquariums, cat and dog goodies, hamster cages, bird stuff, tons of food, etc. They also carry quiet a few pets. The puppies & rats/mice/hamsters are in the back of the store while the fish/turtles downstairs. The bottom floor scares me cause it is dark and millions of fish are everywhere. They also carry those huge Koi Fish in huge children's swimming pools. It is odd. I usually wander around here and check out all the animals. They don't have a petting area for the dogs unless you want to buy one and I have never seen them carry kittens yet. read more

This place is a disappointment.There was a dead lizard in one of the cages... so sad. None of the animals waters were changed. Super dirty. Cages OVER crowded with Guinea pigs! The Guinea pigs are under the birds!! Many feathers flying around in the guinea pig cage. There was someone ( maybe the owner or employee? ) but he was following me around the whole store!! This is a great pet store. Everything is clean and nice which is surprising for such a big area. They have well kept rodents, lizards, birds, and fish. All sorts of supplies are also available. Cages and fish tanks are very cheap, dont bother looking online and overpaying for shipping. The only thing I would suggest is they need to separate wild parakeets from the hand fed ones. Usually people look for a hand fed parrot, not for any random parrot. But the selection of parrots and the price is great. read more

A big pet store w/a good inventory to meet the needs of almost all your pets. The store looks much better since they renovated it and took out the video rental store to give it a more official "pet store" look. I come here often to buy supplies and food for my turtles - ramps, aquarium plants, and food. The prices are fair, but I can't say they're cheap. We easily spend over $50 everytime we come here. They also sell puppies, all sorts of reptiles like turtles and lizards upstairs and downstairs they sell a variety of fish - a great asortment. The lady there remembers us and always greets us and ask about how my turtles are doing - very friendly! They also carry fish/reptile tanks of all sizes and aquarium products as well (filters, etc.). If you're in the Chinatown area, it's definately worth checking out. For a chinatown store, it's surprisingly very clean and organized. read more

Correction: There are other animals besides fish at Pet Central (you probably didn't check out the back part of the store). They carry puppies esp. small/toy breeds, some reptiles such as turtles, and small mammals such as guinea pigs and chinchillas. This is a wonderful family-owned business; I've been going there for years. The staff are very knowledgable and helpful, the selection terrific, esp. for aquariums. And the wide assortment of kung-fu DVDs in Cantonese (for rent or purchase) is just your typical, bewildering San Francisco touch. Gotta love it. Parking is tough; try the public parking garage at 766 Vallejo, or the police station parking garage (which has public parking for a fee as well) across the street from it. read more

The prices here are the lowest I have seen anywhere for fish. I was just at Petco earlier and Petco's fish costs more and they have less of a selection. The reason I am giving 2 stars is because the customer service is bad at the fish area. He wasn't friendly. Didn't greet me. Didn't seem to want to help me. When I asked him to get me "gold" colored fish he said that I don't get to choose what color I want. I couldn't believe my ears. They were 5 for $1. Later on he retracted what he said. He said that if I really want just the gold color ones it would cost $1.99 each. That's ridiculous. 5 for $1 means that they are 20 cents each. Now he wants me to pay 10 times that to insure a gold color. I mean like, crap, it's not like there was any other customer who needed help. It wasn't like he was busy or anything. It wouldn't take it any more effort or time. Chinese customer service sucks. But their prices rock. read more

Asked the owner if he had female gourami, he insisted yes. He picked out one for me and said this is female. I was skeptical and asked many questions but he strongly insisted that it is. I should have trusted my research but I was desperate. I would give it a zero star if I can. They are selling 2 yrs expired dog foods. They don't care if you dog will get sick or die from it. They also sell sample cat food 3 for $1. The package clearly said, "sample only- Not for Resale". Its very shady and stay away from this store. read more

Honestly, I have only bought crickets here to feed my pet chameleon. The crickets have been fine- very crickety and nothing wrong with them, and I will be back for more. However the reptile section seems very lacking. Not sure the animals are very healthy, they look crammed in small cages which are erected without imagination. The turtle tanks made me sad, very squished and overpacked. Otherwise, the store is clean, and the fish tanks and other supplies seem nice. I would not personally buy a live pet here EVER- my reptiles will always be from the East Bay Vivarium in Berkeley. However I will be back for more crickets and random supplies. read more

I was able to get 2 goldfish's for under 10$. The fishes looked cute and wild and very healthy. The owner even recommended me what to feed them to keep them healthy and active. They have some cheaper stuff here unlike Petco. The whole bottom floor is basically dedicated to aquarium life. If you buy a hamster cage here they give you a free hamster with your purchase! The puppies are so cute! read more

this is probably the only place i would go for fish for my aquarium! they have a HUGE selection from fresh water to salt water to everything in between. the fish here are also very healthy and well taken care of! the staff may not be as helpful as you want them to be downstairs where the fish are but for the price and the best aquarium fish around the area, its well worth it. i recently bought a four BEAUTIFUL fish from them! only 18 dollars for all 4! and also if you come here often the guy at the front check out would recognize you and give you a 10% vip card for every time you come purchase anything Besides the wide selection of fish downstairs, the main level has a mass selection of aquariums and filters, pumps, carbonated rocks, heaters, lamps etc.! ALL at a low price! they have a nice selection of different types of hiding houses for your fish for tanks from 5 gallons up to 100 gallons and maybe more! if you're not looking for aquatics, you can head on up to the upper level where there are dogs! birds! hamsters! snakes and lizards! frogs and sometimes spiders! all accessories are also there for your pets and there is always a sells rep upstairs to help you out of you have questions. (if you buy a hamster here, be careful.. last time they sold me a female and male when it was suppose to be two females! i went in because i was curious and left disgusted. although the fish looked ok,except for the goldfish, each fish is supposed to have like a gallon of water to itself, and these were so crowded, all you could see was gold scales in the aquarium. There was a matted little guinea pig covered in dandruff and bald spots. the cage was really small and dirty, the other guinea pigs were terrified of people. There were three puppies, one was matted and un-groomed, one had notches in her ears, and one had bloodshot eyes. the chinchillas had no toys to play with. although these animals were really cheap, they were not healthy and they were definitely not happy. these people should not take care of animals. read more

I write this review for the aquarium: They have just about all supplies. I recently acquired some rummy nose tetra and a female guppy who have been spawning and growing in my tank. Most of their freshwater fish are in decent shape although I did see a decent amount of floaters. Their supplies are not as good a deal as 6th ave & Clement... I saw a lot of modern fish tank designs in the 5 to 20 gallon tanks running about 30 to 40 bucks over their competitors which leads me to believe they sell more to tourism. I highly disagree with the puppy mill business btw. Just because of this I am not returning. read more

I think I've taken every visitor I've ever had in the city to Pet Central because I love it so much. The front of this place is a pretty intense Chinese film rental shop (fitting, as it's located in Chinatown), but get past that section and you're in pet supply heaven. According to my pet-owner friends, the prices are lower than chain pet supply stores like Pet Food Express, which is cool. Why you should go to Pet Central, though, is to see the PUPPIES they sell at the very back of the store. There are other pets for sale there too, mostly reptiles and fish, but nothing warms my heart more than squeezing the face off a 10-week-old golden lab. Be warned, however, that cute don't come cheap - none of the puppies cost less than a grand. Guess puppy mills are expensive. read more

I come here a lot, but mostly to buy cages and bedding for my hamsters and rats to feed my snake. They have a great selection of pet supplies and an astounding amount of fish. I have noticed while there that the puppies look super depressed and arena't kept in very good conditions, I also wouldn't't recommend getting a pet here unless it's a chinchilla or guinea pig or something and even those I would be woried about. I recently had my roommates get a couple of feeder mice for me while I was away. When I came back and saw the mouse it had chunks of fur and flesh ripped out of its back and its tail was broken. It also looked like it was sick, she said that was the way it looked when they gave him to us. I would be wary of any place that sells live animals that aren't even fit to feed to other animals. In short, this place is great for supplies but like the multitude of others on yelp, I would recommend NOT buying any animals other than feeder rodents or crickets read more

This place is pretty humongous. There are all types of fishes, other pets and supplies here. I think they might even do video rental. Sometimes the people give you this up and down look though as if you're about to mess something up.
