Originally built in 1898, you can still see some of the original structure but by the sounds of things the hotel was extended and refurbished in 1920's. The rooms are relatively small - but not in a claustrophobic sort of way - and most have their own hand basins (the toilets and showers are communal). Towels, flannels and bathrobes are supplied but no shampoo, conditioner or body wash - bar a soap dispenser in the shower. The restaurant attached to the hotel serves up all you're typical pub fare - nachos and fish and chips - but it also has a few more adventurous offers like chicken parmagaina and pork belly. Rest assured, whatever you order, the portion will be huuuuge. My vegetarian lasagna totally hit the spot. It came topped with a good helping of cheese and stuffed full of pumpkin. The tomato sauce was a tad sweet for my liking but all in all a pleasurable meal - particularly after a 4 hours bike ride! Special mention must also be made of the service, which was brilliant despite the restaurant being choccas. As charming of a town as it is, I unfortunately don't think I will be returning to Omakau anytime soon but if I do, I know exactly where I will be staying!
