Don't be scared by the reviewers saying the customer service is terrible; it's not. The Peterson pipes are beautifully made and deliver a wonderfully smooth smoke. The workers are nice, so long as you make sure to ask. Unlike some places they don't try to sell you things, they answer questions and Give advice. After merely three minutes of interaction I knew everything I needed to about the pipes I was interested, and had a list of the best pubs in Dublin. You just can't be afraid to ask questions. The Tobacco selection is fun, and though pipes are their main business they carry an assortment of other things like lighters, knives, cigarettes and cigars. Over the past 20 years I have been to many of the world's best tobacconists and Peterson's is light years away from them and not in a good way. I cannot comment on their pipe selection however their customer service and knowledge of cigars are both extremely dismal. The selection is generic and boring compared to JJ Fox and Decent Cigar Emporium which are a two minute and five minute walk respectively. If you are in Dublin and in looking for a good Habanos you should visit one of those two tobacconists and completely avoid Peterson's. My best recommendation is that they should either replace their staff or provide them with customer service courses and one of Vahe Gerard's books so they might know the very basics of Habanos which they currently have no knowledge of. Easily one of the lamest tobacconists I have visited out of the 200+ throughout the world. read more

To say I like smoking is kind of like saying fish kind of like water. I am a brazen, unashamed, totally without regret or guilt smoker. I smoke cigarettes regularly, cigars often and my pipes occasionally. It is almost like a religion and like all true devotees it is necessary to make a pilgrimage from time to time to freshen the spirit and renew ones faith in that which occupies so much ones time. There are a few tobacconists in Dublin but none come close to Peatersons for selection of all the really nice things I like to spend ages looking at - rows of pipes, cases of cigars, jars of tobacco, cigarettes and a small selection of lighters and boys toys. Another reviewer said this is just a pipe shop for tourists and I have to agree. The guys who work here give me the impression that they would rather be somewhere else. They're not pipe smokers. I think they have very little interest in the product they sell. One week I came in to check out the "Aran" pipes and I was told, "We don't sell that here, it's Internet Only." The next week I come in and Aran pipes are taking up 5 feet of wall display. "Of course we have those, it's one of our biggest sellers." Another time I was looking at Churchwardens and the sales-associate told me, "Better get one of those green ones, they are being discontinued." When I came back a month later, all they had were green Churchwardens. It turns out the red ones are no longer made. Either he was just trying to pitch me a sale or he just didn't know what he was talking about. Most Disappointing: Peterson does not sell loose tobacco! Yet they have jars of pipe tobacco on a table by the front door? When you ask to buy a quantity of loose tobacco, you are told, "We don't sell loose tobacco, only tins. Those jars are just for customers to smell." Seriously? A pipe shop with all that space, in the middle of high-rent district (Grafton Street & Nassau St.) doesn't sell loose tobacco? Peterson's pipes have a world wide reputation for being beautiful and their innovative "pipe systems." We spent half our afternoon in the shop narrowing down our choices. There are literally walls of pipes to look through. After some hard decisions, we left the shop very happily with a beautiful green pipe and some Irish Oak tobacco. I've been a pipe smoker for about 7 years now. I had a few shops back in Minnesota that were my favorite. Peterson is a decent shop but there are a few major differences. First off, in Minnesota there is a indoor smoking ban but fortunately there is a loophole for tobacco shops. It's called a "sampling clause" and simply means if a customer is solely sampling the stores products and not just smoking anything, it's okay to smoke inside. My favorite shop in Minneapolis had a lounge in the back for customers "sampling" their products. I can't fault Peterson for not having this because it's not possible for them because of the Irish law but nevertheless, it's disappointing. If anyone knows a place where it's legal to smoke indoors, please let me know. A positive for Peterson is that fact that they make great pipes. I have two currently. One was a wedding gift from my best man a few years ago and the other a birthday present a month ago from my dear wife. They both have a very clean smoke and are easy to maintain. Peterson's pipe designs are classic and unique and always look good. Peterson makes a few decent blends that they sell in tins in the store, but that's really it. I'm used to walking in a tobacco shop and having a counter with maybe 20-30 jars of hand blended tobacco that you buy by the ounce and a shelf with a variety of tins. Peterson limits themselves by only selling the 5 or 6 varieties of tins that they have. Overall, Peterson seems like a tourist stop for pipe smokers. The fact that I had a Peterson pipe before I moved to Dublin and then got a new one from the store on Grafton St. was cool, but as a regular smoker who isn't gonna buy a new pipe very often, I just want a shop with more variety of tobacco blends. read more

This slightly tweedy shop is the retail outlet for Peterson pipe makers of Sallynoggin, Co. Dublin. It's an amazing place that sells all sorts of good manly devices - from custom pipes to tobacco blends, hip flasks, and a whole range of knives, tools and lights. I come here for the cigars - a great range that are kept behind humidity controlled glass doors at the rear of the store. They have everything from machine rolled cheapies to big fat Cubans and some really interesting dark stuff from further south. Just going in and buying a cigar here is an event! The service is wonderful - what these chaps don't know about tobacco and related paraphernalia isn't worth knowing. The prices, of course, can get somewhat insane. You may have to mortgage the country house or do away with the butler's butler, but well worth a visit nonetheless. read more
