We stumbled upon Petit Peru when we left Ottawa to go to a park in Gatineau. My wife and her family are Peruvian so we often search out Peruvian restaurants. This place is an absolute Peruvian "hole in the wall' gem in Ottawa. There is inside seating available, nothing fancy. For food, we ordered the ceviche combo with everything and fried rice with mixed seafood. For drinks, we ordered chicha morada. Everything was delicious. The ceviche was perfectly marinated. The calamari was crunchy, the fish juicy, the shrimp nice and tangy. The fried rice was on a whole other level. Sweet but not too sweet, and you got some seafood in every bite. It wasn't just 80% rice. Finally, I've never had chicha morada like this before. Very refreshing, and it had a little spice to it. I regret not taking some more to go! read more

I was surprised to find a Peruvian restaurant in Ottawa and of course, I had to see how it compared to my Mom's cooking. I decided to get lomo saltado as my main with a ceviche dish for my friends and I to share. For those not familiar with Peruvian food, lomo saltado (literal translation meaning "salted steak") is a Chifa stir-fry steak dish served with rice and sliced potatoes/fries. Ceviche is a seafood dish usually with raw fish cured in citrus/spices and both are absolutely delicious. It wasn't too busy when I went so I can't really comment on the service other than that it was decent. However, the food was quite delicious. It immediately brought me back to being a kid and getting to eat this all the time. They also had Inca Cola which is a staple in most Peruvian households. Although, nothing can ever compare to my how my Mom prepares Peruvian food. I'll say that this was some of the best Peruvian food I've had outside of my parent's kitchen and that I would recommend it to anyone in the area looking to see what the cuisine has to offer. My only complaint would be the ceviche portion is too small for what you pay but that doesn't change how great it tastes! read more

My visit to this restaurant was literally a year in the making. I had sent a message to my half-Peruvian friend to tell him I was going to a Peruvian restaurant, and to make some suggestions. The message was dated last winter! Shame on me for not visiting sooner! Because the appetizers were so cheap, we ordered one each. We got the tamal (stuffed cornmeal), Papa a la Huancaína (potatoes with cheese sauce), and a chicken empanada (stuffed pastry). The first two were just kind of "ehn" for us. I'm not sure if that's because of the way they were prepared, or they didn't suit our taste. But we all agreed that the chicken empanada was AMAZING. I noticed that they actually sell them for take-out too, so that's definitely worth another visit. We were very happy with our entrees. One friend got the Cerviche Tradicional (talapia salad) which came with some really interesting sides, including cancha, which are basically Peruvian corn nuts. My other friend got the Chaufa Rice with Fish. I got the Lomo Saltado, a steak stirfry with rice and fried potatoes. If you're looking to try something new, I do recommend this place. Keep your party intimate though, because the restaurant is really small. read more

4.5/5 I actually really like the food here at Petit Peru. I recently passed by the restaurant with a sign I didn't like, so hopefully they aren't planning to close shop in the near future. Here's me with a review, hopefully to help spread awareness of the delicious food served at this restaurant. My partner and I came in here about a month ago with a Groupon, no expectations whatsoever, other than using up the Groupon before it expired (we had about a day left). We were pleasantly surprised by how our experience turned out. Everybody was really friendly and was eager to explain the dishes in the menu. We ended up ordering an empanada to start, lomo saltado and the traditional ceviche. I come from a country with similar types of foods, so I was really excited to taste how different it would be (or in this case, how similar). The empanada is very good! We almost took some to go - and indeed we would have, if we weren't so full after we had eaten our main dish... well, next time for sure! It's also baked - unlike the fried ones I'm used to, so big plus for that. I had the ceviche, and I must say - it tastes just like when my grandpa used to make them (Filipino-style, but very very similar)! The only difference is that I had to eat it with Peruvian corn canchita and sweet potatoes instead of rice. A very interesting mix, but fortunately, in a very delicious way. My partner also devoured his steak stir fry - a taste of it confirmed that it was just as flavourful as my dish. With the sides, we did find the portions just right (if not deceptively small, but in reality it's more than enough). The prices are a little on the expensive side, however. We were quite happy we had the Groupon with us, but knowing now that the food is worth every penny, I'm sure the prices won't stop us from coming back. I heard about this restaurant from a friend of mine and decided to take the whole family here. The restaurant is right on Montcalm with free parking at the side and has a nice ambience. Since it was our first time here, we decided to try numerous different dishes. The beef and chicken empanadas were homemade and A+. Their chicken, beef, pork and rice dishes were all excellent and very generous in their portions which made my kids happy for lunch the next day. Dessert was tres leches which was also a hit. The owner and head chef even came to our table. If you'd like to try Peruvian food I'd highly recommend you come here, literally just a few minutes over the bridge from downtown Ottawa. I went to this restaurant with high expectations given the reviews. We had just visited Peru last year and were nostalgic. We had just driven 6 hours from Burlington to get to Ottawa and were exhausted. The setting was very rundown - the tables and chairs were ancient and the women's toilet did not work. But the menu looked somewhat genuine. First, the good: We had an chicken empanada to start, and it was well flavoured with a spicy sauce on the side. It was reasonably priced at $4. Now the sketchiness: I had ordered the Ceviche Tradicional. Except the waitress told me 30 mins after ordering that it was not fully available because they were low on tilapia, and asked if I was ok with the Ceviche Mixto, which I was game for trying. Service was incredibly slow - it was only half full when we arrived, and we were the only orders in place - we waited 45 mins for our main courses. The cerviche tasted great, but the portion size for the cerviche was terrible. I had 50% onions on the plate, a couple of shrimps and a couple of squid pieces. My husband had the beef heart, which was well cooked, but again, a very small portion. It was served with a few slices of potatoes. The food was fairly tasty, but the portions were really small - even when looking at those who had just ordered their meals 30 mins before ours, I could tell there was a difference. Now I can understand that it was the end of the day and that they could be running low on supplies, but what I can't forgive is telling me half an hour later that my order can't be filled, giving me a more expensive dish, and charging me the higher price. The food was authentic and it saddens me that everything else was lacking. I have no doubt that this restaurant could be better if the staff only paid a bit more attention to maintenance of the restaurant, better customer service and standardization of portions and prices. read more

This is not fast food, if you are looking for quick try a drive thru. The key is staggered ordering then relaxing while it arrives. I brought guests from down South and we started with beef and chicken empenadas (which were excellent), w/drinks and share plates of Ceviche de Mariscos and Tres Causas that everyone loved. Then we each ordered a main course, all were excellent. The service wasn't rushed, the food was excellent and the other patrons were social and patient (we had a baby learning to walk). I will without a doubt return or order take out. It's worth savouring and fully deserves a couple hours of time and attention to enjoy. read more

My husband and I really enjoyed both the food and service at Petit Peru. We wanted to order one of everything! We opted to share the chicken empanada and the Papa rellena as appetizers, followed by Tres Causas - tuna, lomito and shrimp on a bed of seasoned avocado and mashed potato. Yummy!
