Has anyone else in Nice, France had a horrible experience with trying to rent a car there? Our…read moreexperience took over 2 hours to complete from c. 9-11pm largely because we tried to resist having extra coverage added to our already pre-paid bill and were "forbidden" (their words) from making any modification to the names or card used. The only man working in the office that night of 20 August 2016, (dark, wavy slicked back hair) specifically refused to give his name and refused us the right to speak to a supervisor. What was most shocking and offensive was when we resisted adding the additional coverage, he chose to help 6 all-white customers and said that we had had our chance (we are a mixed-race couple). He kept us waiting at the desk until all the white customers had been served and then proceeded to fix up his office - turning off lights, going into other rooms, etc, and when asked why he was doing that rather than serving his last remaining customers that had been waiting over an hour, he replied that we didn't need to tell him how to do his job. I cannot prove that his motivations were racism-based, but twice I commented aloud that it wasn't right for him to serve all the white customers before us - and he completely ignored the remark - so clearly it didn't bother him that it appeared racist. Eventually we decided to give up and pay the extra coverage charge because we were exhausted and couldn't see any other way to end the situation. We read other reviews on this site (and the Telegraph/Guardian) which said that deposits were not repaid and and we wanted to end the awful experience so badly that it seemed the least painful option in the end. I sincerely hope that no one else has this experience, but want to create awareness to help others improve their holidays, and ideally allow Goldcar to improve what was clearly not an experience any business or employee should be providing.

But when I arrived I was told I had to pay an extra EUR 21 as a non-refundable "refilling fee". (You can't avoid this by returning the car with a full tank). I've booked lots of hire cars and never had this before, I think it's very dishonest. Also if you don't take their addition insurance , the regular insurance is very poor (eg doesn't include vehicle recovery if you have an accident, that's your problem). Most car hire firms are pretty similar but Goldcar are clearly the worst I have used.
