The San Diego Police Captain and his team were special guests at the ceremony, as were the City Council members. To celebrate, there were fireworks, a lion dance, singers from Westminster, and food for all. My dad used to be the Treasurer for this association, so he was really happy to spend the afternoon with his long time buddies. Driving down on University St. towards 52nd St., the temple stood out from the hill. I am not familiar with the area and from photos, there was no mistake that I had found what I was looking for. There was plenty of non-metered street parking. The temple is located in a residential area. There is a parking lot but it has 3 - 4 spaces. Upon arriving, I was a little timid since there were a handful of people walking in and out of the property. I am not Buddhist and I did not want intrude. As I crossed the street towards the gate, I saw a woman with a bag full of vegetables. There were booths of fresh produce, cooked meals and used clothing for sale. I walked inside and was greeted. The vendors were very nice. I did not purchase anything due to having a hardy meal prior to my arrival. The Temple is amazing! The details and color are bright and inviting. I did my best not to disturb the prayer while I was exploring. The entire property is gated and angles of the temple can be limited. The location of the temple is in an area that has a lot to offer. Just down the street is The Tower Bar and there are was a lot of eateries that I've noticed driving around. Wat Sovannkiri is gorgeous, pay a visit!

The last reviewer doesn't go into detail about what left them with a negative impression, but I have visited Wat Lao Boubpharam many times over the last ten years, both on my own and with groups of students, on ordinary days as well as during festivals, and have always found it a very warm and welcoming place. My students and I were mostly white Americans, but we were never ostracized. Quite to the contrary, if festivals or ceremonies were going on, we were always urged to participate. It might have helped that I gave my students a primer in basic temple etiquette before showing up. I also made sure my students knew that many of the older people in the local Lao community do not speak English well -- I wonder if what the other reviewer experienced as rejection might have come down to a language barrier? Or perhaps just different cultural expectations about what Buddhism is and how it should be practiced (which can be *very* different from place to place). But Wat Lao Boubpharam gives a wonderfully authentic experience of Lao Buddhism, and in the course of my own life, I have encountered few people in this world more generous and welcoming to outsiders than Lao Buddhists.

Everyone at NHU is so welcoming, empathetic, and loving. It immediately felt like a radical and safe space. It's an incredibly social-justice oriented community who doesn't shy away from talking about what's happening in our world in sermons, and taking action through community events. I'm able to grapple with hard questions and admit my doubts in this space and I'm not alone in those feelings ! It's a very loving, safe place and diverse congregation.

We started attending this church one year ago because it is in the community which we live and we…read moreenjoy walking to church. We have found it to be a beautiful and filled not with strangers but rather friends we had not yet met! The Sunday service is in English and is an hour long from 10:30-11:30. The Mandarin service occurs at the same time and is located in the fellowship hall. At least once a month we all come together after the Sunday services for lunch which costs $4.00. There are many other Sunday lunches offered such as Chinese New Years, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Summer Retreat, Thanksgiving & Christmas. The beautiful services are available on YouTube. We have found the Wednesday prayer meeting on Zoom to be a dedicated group of people who believe in the power of prayer, and faithfully pray for many who have serious challenges to their health. Our church supports many missionaries to places such as Baja, Africa, Japan And ministry projects to the Middle East.Periodically we have these missionaries come and share their progress. We also pray for and support Samaritans' Purse with outreach to our country as well as world wide ministry to people in need. Our pastors are engaging and bring practical ways we can bring our Christian belief in loving our neighbors and colleagues in life. This church also has Sunday school and nursery programs as well as a Panda Preschool Program. Once a month there is an optional Panda Chapel service for 30 minutes to bring Bible stories and songs to toddlers! If you are looking for a church that encourages you to love God and your neighbors, to read the Bible with joy and pray daily with faith that God truly hears and directs our path in this life, consider joining us in 2025!
