Seafood plays a big role in the cuisine of this North German city, and the Hamburger Tapas came with three toasted baguette slices, each with a different topping: smoked salmon with horseradish, pickled herring, and my favorite, North Sea crab salad in a creamy dressing. Another classic (and unique) dish of the region is known as Labskaus, made with salted beef puréed with beets, topped with a fried egg with a runny yolk, and served with sliced beets and a pickle. The puréed meat was served warm and had a distinct pink color from the beets, but was otherwise not a particularly outstanding culinary creation. The service here, while warm and friendly, was inexplicably slow, and our simple dishes took quite a long time to be prepared.

Our waitress was fluent in English and made us feel welcome in a "so you're not from around her, but that's okay, sit here" kind of way.... Very pleasant! The beer was plentiful and ice cold, and we had the Wienerschnitzel (I know... cliché, but oh so good!), and it came out fast, hot and delicious. Also, for French Fries fans... these were thin, hot and crispy! (Not a big fan of soft fries/chips). Right near the train station for a meal before you travel, or while you're waiting to check into your hotel. We'll be back!

Each plate (you can choose large or normal sized) come with two sides. The choices are side salad, mashed or diced potatoes, red cabbage, and krout. The red cabbage and krout were sweeter than most I've tried. I particularly enjoyed the krout and was told it's both "sour and sweet" krout. There are also three types of mustard: süß (meaning sweet, seemed like a honey mustard), and scharf (meaning sharp, very strong) and mittel-scharf (meaning medium-sharp, still very strong).
