I used to work on MetCalfe and made use of this place every lunch :)…read moreThe trainers are excellent! You make it what you want it BUT the trainers will push you and you'll lose and Tone up your body in no time! I owe a lot to Greco and highly recommend this gym! COVID has been tough on everyone! Do yourself a favour and trust me- Even try it out for a bit and see if it works for you :) Moving back to work downtown and plan on heading back daily :) -Sean

I've always hated gyms. The crappy music, the grim-eyed people, the smell, the jacked-up guys…read moredesperately trying to forget their scrawny high school selves. Ugh. I'd tried a bunch of the big corporate gyms and always quit. I'm not even sure why I decided to try Greco's 10-week plan. It's pricy, for sure, but some girls I work with had raved about it, and I knew a new one had just opened on Sparks. From the start, everything about this place appealed to me - knowledgable trainers, friendly owner, good space, short (45 min) classes. I wanted to die my first time out, but I slowly got stronger. And it's always fun. The style is crossfit-esque - weights and cardio mixed together - and the classes are no more than 25 (though if you pick the right times, you can end up with just 5-10 others). The change rooms are too small, but that's never been a huge problem for me. The location is great for those who live and work downtown. Basically, if you're willing to shell out some extra bucks, I can't recommend this place enough. I've been a member for six months now, and it's still never boring - and only annoying when Justin Bieber is on the music rotation.

FINAL VERDICT: Third…read moreand last review for Studio One. As promised, a word on effectiveness and results: In the course of the 2 months and 15 sessions I had, I would say I didn't really get the results I expected. I feel more fit and that's priceless but I didn't see a weight loss (in fact I saw a significant gain) Overall I didn't feel I was always pushed hard enough. Compared to other trainer sessions I've had (traditional and boxing), this was the least positive result-wise, even after adjustments to my diet and sleep hygiene. I can only guess that this had something to do with a slow start and lack of cardio-intensive workouts. But for the money paid, this is disappointing. I either have to consider more sessions or a different approach to my fitness goals. So while my trainer was fabulous and a guy I hold in high esteem, the Studio One services didn't meet my expectations. Disclaimer- I am a yelper so keep in mind that with a less forgiving/more disciplined diet, you might be able to take better advantage of sessions at Studio One.

A few months ago I was shopping around for a personal trainer to help me out with some…read moresport-specific goals (I'm a dragon boat paddler). I brought those goals to Craig, the owner at Studio One, who set me up with a weekly session with Josh, one of the trainers there. I've been paddling for 15 years, and this is the strongest off-season I've ever had. I know I owe a lot of that to Josh's help. Notably, I find that I am able to give feedback, or to let him know if I'm plateauing/injured/etc., and he is very good at making adjustments in the workouts. He also takes my dragon boat off-season training plan into account, which is not something that a lot of other studios were willing to do. I find the rates to be reasonable, and the Beechwood location is convenient to where I live, so no complaints there. Sometimes I have to shift around my appointment time to accommodate my work schedule, and Josh is always amenable to that. This is a boutique studio, which I prefer. It means there aren't any strangers or meatheads watching you work out. There's not really much cardio equipment, but I would hate to go there and just do cardio (srsly, I can do that on my own). Most importantly, everyone at Studio One is super nice. I never feel judged when I'm there, and when I'm not feeling very strong they're very motivating. As with anything related to fitness you're only going to get out as much as you put in, and I feel like Studio One and Josh really help to make sure that I've got all the tools I need to do that for myself.
