A Vietnamese food vlogging friend told me about Pho An some time ago when we were talking about the best Pho around Brisbane. I had been to most of the Vietnamese restaurants with decent Pho around the river city, but living in Brisbane's Western suburbs limited how far I was willing to travel into the southwest Asian suburban belt, like Inala, to try something more authentic. So, on a recent trip to the Ipswich area for a retail purchase I decided to visit Pho An in Inala, a no-frills restaurant that specialises in, what else, Pho that my vlogging friend had recommended. And I wasn't disappointed. This unassuming small space is a Pho lovers delight, with an open kitchen bustling and boiling away at what they bowl, and with a menu that basically just covers a variety of beef and chicken pho items, with some small specialty dishes too that aren't pho. My dining companion and I both ordered beef phos and were blown away by the intense flavours of the bone broth, the soft-yet-firm texture of the rice noodles, the ampleness of the ingredients and extras to add like bean sprouts, fresh chili, Vietnamese basil and lemon wedges. Table accompaniments were equally generous with Hoi Sin sauce, Sriracha, Chili in Oil, Fish Sauce and more ready to splash an extra flavour to the pho you ordered. And there's a free standing pot of tea on every table to help yourself - more restaurants should be doing this. Overall, the dining space was clean, service quick, a neat modern bathroom was onsite, and we came away with the impression that Pho An was one of the most authentic Vietnamese places for Pho you could find in South East Queensland. Now, if only they would open one closer to my house! read more
